I stand in front of my mother’s grave.
There is a graveyard in Springwater, not far from the old temple. It’s gotten a lot bigger in the past few days, after the mass funeral for those who perished in the battle.
That’s not where my mother’s grave is, though. Since before the takeover, Enoli and Elana Storm, as Alpha and Luna of the Springstorm pack, had plots set aside for them in the family cemetery behind the Alpha’s mansion. Two headstones stand, nearly touching one another. Each takes the shape of a wolf. The wolves face each other with loving reverence in their gazes.
My father’s grave is ceremonial. Bloodfang practice is to leave defeated Alphas to rot in the woods. Mom’s is full, though. She’s down there, where she was always supposed to end up.
She must have long ago given up on being buried here, but here she is, as close as possible to being buried next to her husband, the love of her life, her mare. My father, who I never got to know.
