Chapter 63: Domineering Flames

Ashwood had to think quickly about the best way to go about it. He discarded the idea of just turning around and leaving since he did not know how fast Siegfried was in his current enhanced state.

He created two black daggers and turned his gaze toward Edward and Iris.

"If you don't want them to die…go save them!"

He threw the two daggers, one aimed at Edward and the other one at Iris. This was a common escape tactic. People will always go save their loved ones, leaving you time to either escape or launch a deadly attack at the target.

Right after making his move, Ashwood turned around and poured all the mana he could into his legs before activating his movement technique and disappearing from the spot.

But what he did not expect was Siegfried appearing right in front of him, fire mana swirling around him, body shinning with a red glow after enhancing his muscles with fire mana.

"What?!" The assassin exclaimed. He could not believe that Siegfried ignored his two friends and came to kill him.

'It seems like I overestimated how much he cared for those two…'

Siegfried knew that his body would not be able to take the strain much longer, even with the phoenix's help. He needed to finish it with this move. He rose the magical sword up, placed both hands on the handle, and channeled through it most of the mana he had left.

The magical sword trembled as mana traversed via its conductive material, situated inside the blade. The flames that were already on the blade grew in size and intensity. He then performed a simple vertical slash, this was no technique or spell, just a move of raw power and an overwhelming amount of mana.

The assassin stared in awe at the descending blade for a second before protecting himself with his arms. He had no weapon to block and no time to dodge, so this one was his best chance to survive.

But the moment those flames touched his skin he knew that all hope was lost. He had this bad feeling since the first time he saw those flames, something inside him was telling him that those flames were not normal…there was something hidden inside them. It was something like his own death blades, but this thing that was hidden inside Siegfried's fire was even more deadly, somehow.

What the assassin did not know was that Siegfried had received a tiny drop of phoenix blood. Inside that blood was an incredible condensed source of energy that was capable of creating the most powerful flame in all existence, phoenix fire.

A tiny whisp of this incredible fire was mixed within Siegfried's flames, greatly increasing its deadliness and giving it an overwhelming might.

The moment those flames touched the assassin's skin, his instincts harnessed over many deadly battles over the years, told him the truth. The only thing awaiting him was…death.

As Siegfried's blade descended, an encompassing barrage of flames was following its path. As soon as the blade's motion was completed, those flames continued traveling forward.

First, they disintegrated the person in front of them like it was just a fly who got in the way. Then they continued incinerating all the grass, leaves, and tiny insects on its path, and then... it kept going, turning trees, plants, animals, and anything that would dare get in the way, into ash.

The flames which contained a spark of phoenix fire continued opening a path through the Varian Forest, like a Royal Parade that stops for nothing and no one. Those majestic flames did the same. They carved a path through the forest until there was no more forest to carve…and then…they disappeared, leaving behind a black empty space.

After the attack was complete, Siegfried felt a wave of weakness invading his body. His muscles ached and complained, demanding rest. His bones trembled and his eyes wanted to close for a few hours or maybe a few days.

But even in that condition, Siegfried could not collapse yet. He could not take his eyes off the destruction that he had just caused.

"Incredible…what an overwhelming might." Those were the only words he could muster.

He had seen many things in the past. He has met many powerful individuals and witnessed many incredible feats of power. But not like this…nothing like this. This was true power.

In front of him was a gigantic gash, created by the attack. Everything in its path was gone, or more precisely, everything in its path was burned until it turned into dust.

"I can see the end of the forest…the fire must have traveled for miles!." He exclaimed.

"We are fine, by the way!" Shouted an indignant Edward.

Siegfried turned to look at them. Edward was eyeing him with an angry expression while Iris was gazing at the destruction caused by the flames.

"Oh, you guys made it, great!" Siegfried gave them a thumbs up with his left hand, his right one occupied using the magical sword as a crutch so he would not fall down.

"Don't 'great' me, we could have died!" Shouted Edward.

"I was sure that you two would be fine." Siegfried assured them.

"How?!" Asked Iris.

"Well, Ashwood was only using you as a distraction, I noticed that he did not put much effort into that attack since killing you was never his aim. Avoiding the knives should have been somewhat easy." Answered Siegfried.

"No!" Shouted Iris. She pointed at the black gash. "How did you do THAT?!"

"Oh…that. Sorry, I can't tell you." Siegfried's expression turned serious while looking at Iris.

Iris clenched her fists in frustration, but she knew that Siegfried was in his right to keep his secrets and she could not demand him to hand them over.

Noticing the tension, Edward decided to speak again.

"It wasn't easy, you know? I think I saw that knife like an inch away from my face!... although I don't understand why the knives did not change direction like they did while fighting you."

"Changin the knife's direction probably requires a lot of concentration" answered Iris. "And Ashwood's concentration was somewhere else" She looked at Siegfried.

Three flying figures descended on the clearing. It was the three professors and they carry complicated expressions on their faces.

"What happened here?!" The Headmistress asked.
