Chapter 58: Edward's might

He had read in advance about some rank 1 spells. He did not have a chance to practice them of course, since he lacked the necessary mana.

'I did not expect to try them until much later, but let's see…'

He performed some complex wand movements that ended with his wand pointed up.

"Come forth…twister!" A small tornado started to form on top of his wand and quickly grew in size.

Grunt did not want to stay idle so he pointed his fire wand at Edward and conjured a fire spear, the same one that almost killed Iria.

Edward saw the attack coming and blocked it by creating a windshield with his free hand.

"That won't work! Rank zero spells are like little flies to me now!" Shouted Edward.

His mana keep swirling around and the tornado was already ten meters high.

"Take this!" He made a slashing motion with his wand, sending the tornado forward, toward Grunt, who had decided to start running away.

"You can't escape from this." Edward pulled his wand forward, pointing at the tornado, and sent a strong wave of wind at it. When it made contact with the tornado, this one grew in size and became faster, catching up to the assassin.

The tornado was now over twenty meters tall and was pulling trees out of its roots as it advanced through the forest.

Grunt realized that running was not going to work, the wind was now pulling him toward the tornado. He aimed his wind wand at it and tried to change its trajectory but the spell was too powerful for a Magus Apprentice to manipulate and soon enough he started to get hit by all the debris of rocks and pieces of the trees that the tornado was dragging around.

The assassin started to scream as the wind at the center of the tornado started to cut his flesh.

Edward grimaced at the spectacle.

"You should have just left us alone. I never wanted to fight…"

The process did not last long. The assassin reached the center of the tornado and was promptly torn to pieces, at least giving him a quick end.

Edward pointed his wand out and uses the little remnant of his mana to cancel the spell.

The burning sensation on his navel ended and he felt the rush of power leaving him. With his forces depleted, he fell to one knee, feeling exhausted.

"I won…I wish dad had seen that. He is always complaining that I can't…" His eyes started to close. "Fight…" Edward's eyes closed as the collapsed to the ground.

Siegfried was facing the leader of the assassins. He was completely covered in black robes with a hood and did a good job of hiding his face. He had a very big body, with strong muscles that the robes were unable to conceal.

Behind him, he could hear the sounds of Edward and others fighting with their opponents.

"Aren't you worried about your friends? They are probably being murdered at this moment by my colleagues." The assassin said.

"They aren't my friends, just some classmates. And I am confident that they can take care of themselves." Siegfried's answer could seem a bit dry, but that was honestly how he felt.

During his past life, he did not have many people that he could consider friends with. He only saw Edward and the others as classmates. Even Serena and Angelina were only seen as partners who benefited from each other.

"That's so cold." The assassin said in a mocking tone. "Even someone like me has a few people that I can count on."

"I have not fallen low enough to take life advice from an assassin. Especially one who was hired to kill me." Answered Siegfried.

The assassin took something from one of the pockets on his belt. "I suppose you are right. What good is advice to someone who is about to die." He held the object in his palm. "Expand!"

The object grew in size until it turned into a longsword. The same type is used by knights and most soldiers.

Siegfried took his spear out and held it close. He observed the many cracks on the shaft and the chips on the tip.

'That last attack from the winged tiger did a number on my weapon…is not going to last long, and I don't have a replacement.'

"Your weapon appears to have seen better days." The assassin pointed out. Even from that distance, he was able to see that Siegfried's weapon was heavily damaged.

"Stop worrying about me. You came here to kill me, right?"

The assassin frowned. "Kids these days have no respect…fine… enough talk." The assassin held the sword back and rushed at Siegfried, when he was close, the assassin jumped in the air and performed a vertical slash.

Siegfried could not block with his brittle weapon so he dodge the attack and kicked back to gain some distance. He extended his left hand and created a fire lance with it before sending it to the assassin.

The other man blocked the fire lance with his blade. A sizzling noise was heard as the blade turned red from the heat.

This surprised him since a rank zero fire lance from an apprentice should not have been this strong, especially without using any foci.

"That's impressive…no wonder you are part of the elite class. But don't get cocky, I know magic too!."

The four bracelets on his body started to shine. With a loud ripping noise, his robes started to break as his muscles grew in size.

Siegfried observed his oponent with intenrest. 'This looks like the magic from the Garret family, but they use gauntlets to fight instead of bracelets like the Vance.'

"Hahaha! This is my specialty. Physical enhancing magic, no one can stop me now!." The assassin adopted a charging pose, and then, his feet left the ground with so much force that the earth beneath them shattered and the assassin disappeared from his spot.
