Chapter 21: How did I get here?

<Saki POV>

Opening my eyes, I was again greeted by the roof of the nurse's ward.

'I feel like this will be a scene I'll see often.'

"She's awake, sir." Hearing the elf nurse's voice, I lifted my head to see who she was referring to, and it was none other than the headmaster. I didn't know what to think, why would he even be here? There was no way he found me being beaten and tortured by chance.

'Speaking of which, what the hell happened?' The last thing I remember was everything going black. The injuries I should have received were healed, but judging from the nurse's reaction, it seems like I am completely fine.

"Good… Saki, was it? I need you to meet me in my mage tower during your next break." When he told me that I needed to meet him, nerves instantly struck me, as what could he ever want from me?

"You're not in trouble, don't worry. However, I must go, I have things to do." In a flash of light, Headmaster Tolverkin disappeared, leaving me with the nurse.

"O-okay, what the hell happened?" Sitting up on the bed, I looked at the nurse, hoping for some kind of answer.

"The Headmaster came walking in with you in his arms. He said you were unconscious, and after checking for injuries, you were completely fine, but he came to me to double-check." Explaining how I got here, it didn't explain the fact that I wasn't injured at all. I put my hand to my stomach, trying to feel the burn wounds, but nothing was there. If anything, my skin felt somehow smoother.

'I'm so confused.' I tried to think back, but even remembering the kind of pain I went through caused me to tremble.

"Well, seeing as you are okay, you can head to class. It has already begun, but don't worry, the teacher should already know you will be late." The nurse gave me the okay to go, but honestly, I didn't want to leave. However, sadly, that isn't an option, so I can only hope that the rest of the day goes well.

"O-okay, see you later... nurse?" I got up from my bed and I said my goodbyes, but it occurred to me that I had never learned her name.

"Helen and I hope to see you outside of the ward." Helen gave me a smile and wave, which was comforting. I felt reassured knowing Helen would look after me.

"Thanks Helen." I took my leave and headed to my magical theory class, which was definitely something I didn't want to miss too much.

Quickly navigating the quiet halls, I opened the door to the class quietly. Luckily, it didn't make a very loud sound, and I was able to sneak in and take a seat at the back. Some of the students looked back to see who it was, but they quickly lost interest when they realised it was me.

'I guess being a peasant has some benefits.' I couldn't believe I was saying it, but knowing people would ignore you was kind of nice. If I had been treated nicely in the first place, I would have hated it, but since everyone seems to hate me, I'm glad to be ignored.

"So students, I will like you all to open the textbook and study the magic circle on page 24. If you are confident, you can draw it and test it out, but if I see any of you do something other than what's in the textbook, you will be banned from using magic in my class." As I sat down, the teacher gave out some instructions that were simple enough. However, as I pulled out my textbook from my bag, the teacher came walking up to me.

Now, seeing her up close, I was able to see that my teacher was a half-drow. I could tell by her ears and the fact that her skin colour was that of a human, whereas most drows usually have blue skin.

It was an interesting combination, but I couldn't talk much since I'm half fox and I don't want to imagine what kind of origin story that was.

"Saki, please come with me." The teacher called out my name and walked past my desk towards the door.

"O-okay." Even though I just sat down, I quickly grabbed my things and followed the teacher. I wasn't risking my stuff getting tampered with, so I hope it wasn't too weird for me to take them with me.

Walking outside of the classroom me and the teacher then stood just outside the door.

"Don't worry, I just want to talk to you about something, if I may." She looked at me, waiting for my confirmation.

"Oh, what did you want to talk about?" My heart raced as her tone of voice sounded like she was about to trick me. It wouldn't be too far off from her personality, as she does give the impression of being very carefree and the type to try to trick students.

"What colour core did you see yesterday?" Getting straight to the point, I was shocked by the question. I didn't think my small reaction to my rainbow-coloured core would have caught her attention.

"Yellow…" It was hard to decide if I should tell the truth, as a rainbow-coloured core sounded like it would gain me a lot of attention which was what I wanted to avoid.

"And?" However, it was clear that she was onto me, not accepting it as the full answer.

'Shit, I don't know what to do. Is there even a reason why I should hide it? So far, all the teachers have been here to help, so surely it's no different now.' It was tough, but due to coming to this world through weird time shenanigans, I felt like I should hide these things.

'What am I even thinking? How am I going to get answers if I don't open up? In the end, I wanted answers. I didn't understand what was going on with this body or the capabilities it had. If I am going to learn, then I will need to stop thinking like I need to hide everything.

"I-it was a lot of colours, like a rainbow. I don't know the specifics as I opened my eyes shocked at the amount I saw." Confessing what I actually saw, my teacher looked at me with surprise.

"H-hold on." Out of nowhere, she began scrambling around in her pockets, looking for something. After a moment of searching, she pulled out a tablet with a bunch of writing on it.

"Hmmm, it says you are adept in solar flame magic, which explains the yellow, but for someone to have a rainbow core, it makes no sense, how is that even possible?" I stood there, not sure what to do, but I guessed the tablet had all the student's information.

"Okay, I was expecting to hear you had 3 or 4 elements, but a rainbow was beyond my expectations. If it isn't too much to ask, may I request that you visit me in my office? It won't be today as I need to prepare some things."

It was probably the best-case scenario, depending on how this meeting goes, but it felt like I made the right choice. This might be the chance to get some answers about myself and possibly lead to hints as to what kind of magic brought me here.

"S-sure I don't mind." I wasn't going to reject it now after confessing because, if anything, that would make me more suspicious.

"Good, expect to get a message under the name Kasla, now let's hope the classroom isn't up in flames." Being quick to move on, Kasla opened the door to the classroom, and luckily, it seemed like everything was okay.

'Wow she is quick to move on, I feel like there should have been more to discuss.' It was quite abrupt to already heading back inside the class, but there was limited time and if we are meeting then questions can come later.

Following behind her, I saw many students trying to draw a magic circle, but none were able to complete it yet.

Kasla returned to the front, and I took my seat in the back while pulling out my textbook again.

"Alright, class, I just want you to know that it's impossible to draw it." When she announced that it wasn't actually possible, there was an uproar of annoyed students.

"EHH?"

"What the hell teach?"

"So that was for nothing?"

Complaints echoed throughout the room, all to the amusement of Kasla, but I'm sure this whole thing was important.

"Now listen before you get angry, the main reason for the exercise was to see if you can actually draw your mana in a neutral state. Seeing as all of you managed to draw a line, it is a good sign that you have good control over the mana in your body." Hearing the explanation made me wonder if it was possible for me. I didn't get a chance to do it, so I quickly lifted my finger in the air and tried to let out mana without imagining anything.

To my surprise, the tip of my finger lit up a slight yellow, and moving it caused a line of light in the air.

'Thank god I didn't start drawing in a rainbow or something.' It certainly would have produced some weird reactions from the class, but it seems my mana mainly takes a yellow form for now.

'Hopefully, Kasla can figure out what my rainbow core means.'
