Chapter 2: Beyond Unreasonable
I could hear the sound of heavy raining outside. A pleasant scent was in the air and someone was snoring.
(What the hell! Who is sleeping while I have been wasting my time here working on someone else's project? Who dares to sleep in the office? Especially when I have been doing all the unreasonable projects for this entire month.)
In all honesty, my company is not that bad like there are black companies, squeezing their employees but still, this is unexpected.
Why me though? I have undertaken projects with limited resources and always finished on time but this one I am currently working on, is superbly unreasonable. This one has been given to only me, to work alone. Can you believe it? I have been working on a project that at the very least needs a whole team of 5 people to complete.
(Isn't this too unreasonable? Why with me? This shitty situation and when did this company turned shitty?! Ah, I am getting mad!! Super Mad!! Come on, bring it on you shitheads! Once I finish it, I will laugh on your faces!!)
While cursing internally, I heaved a heavy sigh and suddenly realized something.
(Hey wait, if I have been working on my project, why my eyes are closed? Where is my laptop?) (Wait, don't tell me! Am I the one sleeping?!)
A sudden jolt shook my entire body and I felt the sensation of falling down. Then a thunderous roar finally helped me pull out of the darkness. Strangely, I tried opening my eyes but immediately closed again as the impact of sudden lightning was surreal. I felt multiple presence near me laughing and mumbling. Finally, I was able to open my eyes and saw my boss standing in front, fuming while holding a water bottle.
Oh Shit! Instant realization and I stood up remembering that I was in my office and working on a deadline project. And, somehow, I slept while working.
(To hell with you man!)
"YOU, WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING!!" (Angry boss)
Apparently, my angry boss was shouting and I could see clear veins popping on her forehead.
"Oh boss, I didn't realize but I guess I was sleeping."
Suddenly I heard a crushing sound and the bottle that my boss was holding bent to an unimaginable degree. I was literally impressed that her frail looking body could conjure such strength. I was impressed only because the bottle was not empty at all. And, that made me realize I shouldn't have said that!
I bowed down with full sincerity before my boss could utter another word and apologized loudly.
"SORRY BOSS!!!! I was so tired and I haven't slept well for this whole week but still it is my fault that I slept. However, it's true; I really didn't realize that I was sleeping."
But when I was showing my sincerity through my apology, I realized that while bowing, I hit my boss's stomach real hard with my head. Now, she was rolling on the floor holding her stomach.
I could hear more laughter from all around.
(You bastards, you are not helping at all.)
Complaining internally, I looked all around with an angry face but they kept enjoying the view. Apparently, my colleagues were the only ones enjoying. Then again, who stands this close to someone!! But figures, she won't be listening to any of my bullshit again.
While holding my boss's hand, trying to get her stand up I kept apologizing. I made her sit on a nearby chair but she shook my hand and sat on the chair while holding her forehead.
"Sigh! What do I do with you?! Listen, you are not going home today and will finish the report along with your presentation in the office. I don't care if you spend the entire night here. I am not going to be any more lenient with you. Finish the report and then go home."
"No!"
I muttered slowly but was ignored by my boss. Well, she is technically not a bad person and usually is good with all her subordinates but this week, she dumped whole team's work on me alone (poor soul) and now she is asking me to finish the whole shit while working overtime! How cruel!! I can't take it anymore! I need some good sleep!
I kept shouting internally then I sighed to myself.
(Bring it on you bastards, I will finish this whole shit and dump it back on your faces!)
After deciding, I started typing on my work laptop. All I could hear was the sounds of my fingers moving on the keyboard, typing while I worked on the list compilation and storing the data on the server. It was a tough job sometimes. Particularly when you would have to do the whole thing alone.
"Ah! What a drag!"
My internal feelings were leaking out and when I saw around, no one was there. Somehow, I felt my colleagues left the office, while I was working.
I stood up and went to the pantry area of my working floor. I pressed the button on the coffee machine, which started filling up the cup.
"Ah, this is as shitty as usual."
The machine coffee by no means was good but while working on longer projects, all I could drink was this shitty coffee. Still, it felt like a luxury compared to the burden of working on someone else's deadline.
While thinking about my unreasonable situation, I kept sighing and sipping my coffee.
---------------------Boss's POV-------------------
(Ah, that idiot hit me really hard in the stomach. I am still feeling the pain.) I sat down in my cabin after the ruckus and saw my secretary walking towards me while holding two cups of coffee in her hands.
"Boss, here is your coffee. Please try to calm your mind."
"Ah yes, thank you Minami-san. It can at-least helps me a little. But that idiot is still giving me headache."
"But boss, isn't it really unreasonable this time? I am not questioning you but the task he was given to finish alone is not feasible for a single person. I think, this entire month, his projects are somewhat unreasonable."
"Tch, I know that already. I know that. Very well, let me tell you but make sure to not tell anyone else."
While listening closely, Minami sat down on the nearby chair.
"That idiot is way too good with his work. You know, he finishes all his projects and everything, that too before the deadline. I never wanted to give him this project alone but this particular task was given by the head office. They have heard his praises from the department of chief who visited last quarter. So, to review if he can manage this kind of work, they are thinking of transferring him to the head office."
"Oh my, really?! That's a great news boss! But seriously to think you would have to do such kind of work to be in the head office. I wouldn't want to think about being put in the same situation."
"Ah no, I think you misunderstood. No one even in head office can do such large-scale projects on their own. It's just a way of testing the abilities and adaptability of the employees."
"However, I feel it's sadistic."
All I could do was show a wary laugh. Yeah, it is somewhat sadistic on the company's part but they want best of the best to be in head office. And, that idiot didn't even say no anyway! While sighing I kept sipping my coffee.
--------------------*****'s POV--------------------
(I did it, finally I finished! YES, YES, YES, YES, YES!!!! Take it all, you shit heads! On your face!!)
Cursing internally, I slowly stood up and looked around and then looked at the wall clock. It was 11:50 PM and as expected everybody left.
"But wait, do I close this office now?!"
While asking myself such a stupid question, I realized that security team is available 24/7 and night shift people take care of the office after hours. I started walking fast and once I was out of the office. I saw two security people coming towards me.
""Oh *****-san, doing overtime again."" Both of them asked simultaneously.
"Yeah, this whole month has been terrible. Just finished the deadline."
"Seems tough, thank you for your hard work and take care while on the way." "Yes, please take care."
While waving my hand to both of them, I kept walking in the direction of my favorite drinking place. Why, you ask?! I have to drink down all my misery. Fortunately, tomorrow is Saturday and I will be sleeping for the whole day!!
While thinking about having off days, I felt my mood lifted and without realizing, I was standing outside my favorite drinking bar. After entering I heard the hostess voice.
"Oh! *****-kun welcome! You came after whole week this time. Are you doing your overwork again? Please take care. Ah, do you want your usual?"
"Ah Hikari-san, I am back and yes, the usual please. Work has been terrible for the whole month but I am managing somehow. Thank you for your concern. How are you and work these days?"
"Work is good and so am I. Don't I look healthy to you, huh?"
"Ah! So sorry! You look perfectly fine."
I said while clasping my hands and with my tongue out. Well, the hostess is 60 years old friendly lady but can be sarcastic sometimes. While I made such gesture, she broke into her usual laugh.
"Mou, you never learn. Sit wherever you want and I will bring in a little special treat tonight."
While looking around, I found an empty table and sat down. A few minutes later, Hikari-san brought me chilled beer, karage and omurice.
(Really?! Hell yeah!)
"Oh! Hikari-san! Thank you so much! I was missing this so much, I love you!"
"Yeah, eat slowly. Really *****-kun is 29 years old but you really like your omurice."
(Ah, yes! This is the taste of home cooked food. Really how I miss it so much!)
I started gulping down. It's really hard to survive without a family. Seriously, I should think about marrying someone. While I could cook but I don't like my own cooking. People say I cook good enough but I still feel like something is missing whenever I cook. Well, instead of thinking about unreasonable stuff, I should only focus on my food and beer.
As far as I remember, I have been mostly alone in my life after my grandparents passed away. They were wonderful people, who took care of me and raised me into a somewhat decent adult. But still, I somehow got a shitty personality.
Ah, but don't get me wrong, I am not doing anything immoral. It's just my internal monologues, sometimes, I curse or badmouth people without letting it show on my face. Well, it does feel good though.
Yeah, I do it always, especially to people who laugh at me. I can't stand those people. Still, my grandfather always told me to be a decent person and live a fulfilling life.
(Sorry grandpa! I will work on my internal personality as well.)
While bickering with my inner thoughts, I finished eating in about 10 minutes.
Hey you see, I eat really fast! I stood up and walked towards Hikari-san.
"Hikari-san, the omurice was really tasty. Thank you as always for going out of your menu to treat me."
"This kid, what are you saying now? Omurice was cooked at home not here. You should know better; we don't cook anything out of our menu."
"Yes, I know! But it really was delicious. Thank you, I feel rejuvenated now."
"Ah, come again and don't overwork too much and good night."
"Yes, I will take care. Good night!"
After paying, I left the drinking bar. There weren't too many people at this time of the night so I kept walking with a steady pace.
(Ah, such pleasant wind is flowing. My mood is getting better and now all I need is some good sleep!)
I kept walking towards my house. It isn't too far away from my office, a reasonable 40 minutes' walk. I could take train but I like walking at night while feeling the wind on my face, very few pleasures that I enjoy.
Before I could reach the nearest back ally to my apartment, I saw a group of five standing frozen in the middle of the road.
(Huh! What the hell! Who in their right mind stands in between a road?! They aren't looking that old. Are they high school kids or college students?)
(Ah, this is not the time of thinking such useless stuff. What the hell are they doing in the middle of the road and at this time of the night?!)
Suddenly, I heard screeching of wheels and I saw a truck coming from the other side towards their group.
(What the hell are these kids doing?)
"Hey, move out! There's a truck incoming."
I shouted as loudly as I could, but I didn't think they hear me.
Without realizing, I was running towards them and somehow everyone vanished.
(What the hell?! How can someone vanish into thin air? Shit, once again an unreasonable situation! To hell with it!!)
Then with a Thump sound, a heavy impact landed on my body that felt disastrous. Suddenly, I realized.
(Oh shit, I am standing on the place of the kids.)
After the horrendous impact, my body flew into the air. I felt air leaking out of my lungs and excruciating pain assaulted me that I have never experienced before. I landed near about 100 meters away from the crash site with several of my bones broken and my body getting limp. I wasn't breathing. I was simultaneously feeling a hot and cold sensation. My body was drenched with a thick liquid, my own blood. The taste of blood in my mouth felt really unpleasant.
(Shit, this hurts badly. Will I survive? Again, an unreasonable situation! To hell with all!!)
(Shit, it hurts! It hurts! It hurts! Goddamn, it hurts!!)
While cursing internally, I realized light fading outs of my eyes. All there was darkness, and after few seconds my consciousness faded into the darkness.
