Amos awakes to find that the demon had left him a calling card before it descended back into the dark through the doorway of bones; three dead Puff Adders lie atop of his blanket, placed there by the creature while he slept.

He knows that the creature hates him, but he hates the creature as much in return. They are only joined through hatred. But he also knows that he must tread carefully with this creature, for to anger it anymore might be his undoing, and he has a very bright future planned for himself. The only way he will be able to climb that ladder of success is if he has the demon.

He looks around the hut, gathers the circle of bones and moves out into the sunlight. He must move from the hut, for Van Zyl will look for him here. Amos is not ready for an assault yet, only when the night falls will he be ready to release the demon.
