#Chapter40
Sun sets over the forest, driving the search parties back to the compound, the day spent in fruitless frustration. Tempers are frayed as the urgency of finding the woman sinks in.
Piet and Roger make a beeline for the Officers pub, where they know they will find comfort in the form of a bottle, and possibly be able to sleep without the dreams that haunt both men. Vivid dreams of Veronica being gutted over and over again.
News that the dogs have arrived brings both men to their feet. They hurry outside to greet the newcomers, eager to start the search, but the dog handlers say that the animals and they themselves are tired, and will only be ready to resume the search in the morning.
Both men plead with the two handlers, but they are steadfast in their stand and refuse to budge, even Roger trying to pull rank has no effect. The two men return to the pub defeated.
