Chapter 145 : Physical Test
It was in the middle of August, so even though the clock hadn't touched the number 8, the weather was already hot today. All of the Seirin players had already sweated a lot even before they started training. However, the enthusiasm is still there, especially when they see the blonde woman standing next to Riko.
"Yo~ho~, everyone! Long time no see!"
"Long time no see, Alex-san!"
"Yeah! I miss you so much!"
"Idiot! She is way older than you! Don't be a perv!"
The excited chatter could be heard in the gym, making Riko twitch her mouth in annoyance. She knows pretty well why her players were excited today. It was because Alex wore a pretty thin shirt paired with a tight pant, showing off her well-developed adult body to the horny high school students in front of her.
Riko couldn't blame the older woman, though. She had a pretty similar attire here to make herself comfortable for moving around. However, that doesn't mean she would let her players leer over Alex that blatantly.
"Okay, everyone! Koganei, Kawahara-kun, Fukuda-kun, and Izuki, go down. Push-up 25 times now!"
As if realizing something, those four names who were mentioned by Riko paled a little before they shrieked at the same time and did exactly what she said.
"Hi~!"
"Sorry, Senpai! I forgot about it!"
"Well, if you can forget about it, that only means the punishment is still too light. Do it quick or I will double it!"
"Yes, Coach!"
This was the new rule that Riko set up for the team after Momoi's visit last time. Even though she knew the perverted nature of high school boys, she still had the reputation of the team to be maintained. If there are rumors of harassment toward girls due to her players' pervert nature, that would be bad. That's why she created this rule, that whoever said or did anything in a pervert manner, whether it was conscious or not, had to do push-ups 25 times, and if they were repeated offenders, the punishment would be doubled up.
This was the first time anyone caught by this rule, so anyone other than those four just watched his teammates' misfortune with gloating expressions. A few minutes later, those four had finished their punishment, panting heavily while lying on the floor with their eyes closed. In this kind of weather, any exercise would be pretty challenging, so Riko didn't bother about it at all.
"Well, since they are done with their work, let's sit down first and talk about business." She took two chairs from the other side of the gym and offered one for Alex. All the Seirin players followed her movement and sat on the ground. After everyone had their focus on her, Riko coughed a little before announcing, "Since we still have three weeks before the summer holiday ends, we will hold a training camp for 5 days in Onjuku!"
Just as she expected, her players froze on the spot for a second before hell broke down in the gym.
"Woah! Is that the famous beach in Chiba?"
"Really?!"
"Yeah! I have been there a few times, and let me tell you, it was the perfect place to spend the summer!"
Riko twitched the corner of her mouth at that comment before she coughed. "Don't forget, we will go there for training camp, not just for play, okay?"
"Yes, coach!"
"Is it alright, though?" in the middle of the excitement, Hyuga voiced his concern. "Where did you get the budget? I know the club's budget is not enough for us to do the training plan for that long. Don't forget, we plan the budget together."
"Don't worry about it." It was Alex who answered Hyuga's question, waving her hand nonchalantly, dismissing Hyuga's concern. "I have already talked to the principal, and since we managed to advance through the national in the last inter-high, he is willing to pay all of the expenses for this camp. Moreover, the principal's family owned a small inn there, so we don't have to worry about the living place."
Hearing that, the excitement exploded once again on the team.
"Is that so?!"
"Wow, the principal is very generous!"
"Idiot! That is because we had a good result last tournament! If we don't, there is no way in hell he would do that for us!"
"Okay, everyone! Hear me out first!" Riko clapped her hands loudly to gain back her players' attention. "You have three days to prepare before we go, so we will not hold a high training intensity until then. However, we would discuss first what we aimed for in the training camp here, so you need to listen carefully."
Seeing all the serious nods from the boys, Riko was satisfied with their attitude.
"Okay, we haven't done this for a long time. Let's do the physical measurement first."
After that, everyone stood up and followed Riko to the corner of the gym. There, they could see a few tools that were necessary to help like a height chart stuck on the wall or a scale to measure weight. Seeing this, Furihata couldn't help but be curious. He had never done this kind of test before, so he wanted to know his physical stats. And it seemed he was not the only one.
"Oh, it's been a long time since I measured my height! I should grow taller!"
"Pfft! Koganei-senpai, there is no way you will get taller! You are the shortest one here!"
"Yeah! Even Izuki-senpai is taller than you!"
"Hey, what do you mean by that!"
"Okay, everyone! Line up!" Riko clapped her hands once again. "I will call you one by one, so be patient! Junpei, you are the captain, so you go first!"
Hyuga walked calmly to the wall to get his height measured. After that, he spread his arms wide for the wingspan, and finally, he stood up on the scale to get his weight measured. It was pretty simple and fast, and with the cooperation of all the players, this went pretty quickly.
Furihata himself was satisfied with his measurement. The last time he got his height measured was last year, and it stuck at 170 cm. Since then, he had grown taller to 174 cm and his height now was exactly the same as Izuki. What he didn't expect though, is his wingspan measurement. The data showed his wingspan was 183.6 cm. Even though he knew basketball players would have longer wingspan, 10 cm greater than the height is a bit exaggerated, right?
"Alex-san?" He spoke hesitantly. "Is this data normal?"
The blonde woman took a glance at Furihata's data for a second before she smiled knowingly.
"What's the problem? The result is great, right?" She pretended to be a fool. "Even though the wingspan is above average, it was still within normal. And if you are worried, you can search in internet about it. You will find your abnormal wingspan would bring advantage to your basketball career." She said reassuringly.
Furihata sighed in relief after hearing the explanation. Alex could understand his worry. Even though a greater wingspan is good for basketball, in normal life, it would be seen as a freakish attribute. And just like the usual society, the physical difference often resulted in bullying the abnormal one. Even though Furihata had a stable mentality, this kind of thought would slip sometimes into his mind, and it was her role as the coach to reassure him that it was alright.
"Speaking of wingspan…" Alex's smile broadened with a hint of mischievousness. "You are not the one who had the most exaggerated wingspan. Just look at Tsuchida-kun and Kiyoshi-kun's data."
"Eh? Really?"
All of them surrounded Tsuchida and Kiyoshi quickly, trying to look at their data curiously. Those two could only show it helplessly to their teammates to put them at ease. When they saw the number, they hissed simultaneously before looking at the two senpai as if they were monsters.
"Is this a bit exaggerated?"
Furihata himself was glad after seeing the number. Tsuchida's wingspan was 197 cm, 12 cm greater than the height. As for Kiyoshi, it was even more exaggerated. The center's wingspan was 211 cm, 17 cm greater than his height. At least, he wasn't the only abnormal one on the team.
"Don't worry about it, everyone!" Alex spoke cheerfully. "Even though it was a bit abnormal, the greater the wingspan is, the better a player could perform defensively. Even though it wasn't the only aspect, this should explain why those three could become our best defenders here."
"So that's it…" Koganei who was also a defensive-minded player nodded in understanding. "So, Alex-san, what is the normal wingspan for an average player like me?"
Alex pondered for a second before she answered, "Well, I don't know the exact number. But it was usually around 2 inches or about 5 cm greater than your height. But don't worry. It wasn't the exact number and it wasn't the only parameter to measure how great you were."
Hearing that, everyone checked their data once again. Some of them gasped as they just realized their number was above average, and some sighed in disappointment at their result. One who could be seen as not satisfied with his result was Kagami who glanced at Tsuchida, Kiyoshi, and Furihata in envy. Unfortunately, this kind of statistic is not something that could be improved by training. He could only accept it silently while trying to make it up with the other statistic.
"Well, since you all finished the physical measurement, let's do the fitness test too."
After that, they did a set of fitness tests for a while. There were standing jump and running jump to test the explosive leg power, third-quarter court sprint to test the speed, and lane agility drill to test the player's ability to change direction. All in all, it was a pretty comprehensive test. The only thing left behind was the bench press to test the strength. But since the school didn't have the equipment to do that, Riko decided to test it in her father's gym the other day.
After the test, Furihata looked at his result in a satisfied manner. In speed and agility tests, he was the best among them all. He wasn't surprised by that, considering those two were the most important aspects of his off-the-ball playstyle. The most outstanding thing was his running jump stats which was about 88 cm. It was 20 cm higher than his standing jump stats which made him surprised.
Hell, he touched the rim pretty easily which freaked him out. This was the first time he realized he could jump that high, and if he had the ball in his hand, he was sure he could dunk it without that much difficulty.
Of course, he wasn't the number one in that aspect. It was Kagami with his explosive bounce who shocked all of them the most. Furihata didn't know the exact number, but it was only a few cm below the top of the board. No matter whether it was in Japan or the States, this kind of explosiveness belongs to top players.
Kiyoshi also had surprising data. Even though it wasn't as explosive as Kagami, it was only a few cm below the red-haired boy. And seeing how it didn't take too much effort for Kiyoshi to reach that point, Furihata was sure his senpai held back a lot to avoid another injury. It was an understandable concern, considering Kiyoshi just came back after half a year of a knee injury.
All in all, Furihata was satisfied with his result. After taking a glance for the last time, he turned his attention to Riko and Alex, waiting for them to announce the next agenda.
"So, how is it?" Alex asked with a smile. "Are you satisfied with your result?"
Even though not everyone is above her standard, Alex was pretty satisfied with the players' attitude. After comparing them to each other, instead of being dejected, she could see determination burned in their eyes. If they could maintain this state, it would be easy for them to improve their data.
"Well, since you have done all of the tests, let's talk about our training plan. Riko-chan, please give it to the other."
Riko stood up quickly and shared a bundle of papers with all of them. At first, she got blank expressions as they didn't know what was going on. But when they saw the content on the paper, they hissed simultaneously.
"This..."
