Three days later, Furihata found himself sitting in his bed, waiting for the doctor to give him clearance. Besides him, his mom also waiting for the doctor to come while smiling at him mischievously, and Furihata knows why. It is because of the presence of someone that he should have thought about it before, yet somehow, he didn't.
When he shifted his eyes to the person beside his mom, he could see the shy quiet girl bowing her head to hide her blush.
Yeah, the girl is Hana, his classmate that somehow both Furihata anad his mom thought had a crush on him.
'Tch.' Furihata clicked his tongue inwardly. 'I should see this coming. I know Mom would not let this matter go easily, and she will set up something worse in the future. I need to discuss it later so we can set up the line we shouldn't cross. I just hope that it would not be too late.'
His thought was snapped by his mom's voice.
"Kou-chan?" He turned around just to see both his mom and Hana staring at him. One with a concerned gaze, and the other with mischievous eyes. "Why do you look so grumpy? Look! Even your eyebrows meet each other!"
She handed her phone to Furihata, showing an image of him furrowed his brows deeply.
"You took a picture of me?" He asked in disbelief. "I will delete it."
"No way!" His mom snatched the phone immediately from his hand. "This will be added to my collection of Kou-chan's growing-up album!"
"You still have that one?! I swear I deleted it when you were not around!"
"Of course, I still have it! No way I didn't back it up from the start!" She stuck her tongue out with a mocking face before turning around to the other girl. "Are you curious about it, Hana-chan? We can see baby Kou-chan together if you want it."
"Moooom!" Furihata groaned more at his mom. "Look at her! You make her uncomfortable here." He pointed his finger at Hana who has a boiling red color on her face.
"Well, she hasn't said no, though.. So, what do you think, Hana-chan?"
They keep bickering for a while until the doctor who handle Furihata's case entered the room. The process after that is pretty simple, just the doctor trying to remind Furihata not to do strenuous exercises, not to force himself, to remain careful when playing basketball, and call the hospital again if he feels something wrong. Nothing special, just the usual precautious warning that the doctor has to give to their patient.
It only took fifteen minutes before Furihata finally feels the fresh air once again outside of the hospital.
"It's good to be out here." He muttered lowly. Hana just nodded slightly beside him.
"Yeah. But you need to be more careful in the future, Kouki-san, or you will end up with something worse."
Furihata feels touched by the attention the girl puts on him. Even though she didn't speak a lot during her visit (not that he could do anything about it, considering how his mom would always tease them to death.), she still put an effort to visit him every day. Even though it just started with her being dragged by his mom, Furihata couldn't say he is not happy with it.
"Thank you for taking care of me, Hana-san." He said with a sincere tone. "While I cannot promise an incident like this wouldn't happen again, I will be more careful about it from now."
Hana is a bit startled by the sudden thanks she received. But when she saw the gratitude in Furihata's eyes, her smile bloomed as a tint of red shade could be seen on her cheeks. She turned her head around quickly when she noticed Furihata also staring at her, trying to hide her silly grin.
"I am happy to help!"
Furihata also noticed that, but he didn't dare to mention it. So, he decided to change the topic of the conversation.
"By the way, anything special happened in the school when I left?"
"Anything special…" She pondered for a moment before shrugging. "Besides you and Kagami-san getting injured, nothing, really. But you come back right in time! Tomorrow is the review exam day. If you miss it, you will have to take the exam together with the bottom 100 students who have to take remedial lessons. It would be a shame if the number one student has to take the exam with the lowest group. Not that there is anything wrong with them, of course! They just have a more difficult time learning!"
Furihata looked at Hana amusedly before he interrupted.
"Hana-san, it's alright. I understand where you come from. I know you are not trying to look down at them. So, take a breath, okay?"
Hana did what Furihata told her, trying to calm her nerves. After a few seconds, Furihata could see a determination suddenly burning in her eyes, startling him for a bit.
"What's wrong?" Furihata couldn't help but be curious. Hana shook her head slightly before she replied, "If you take the exam tomorrow, we will have a chance to compare our results. I will not lose to you again, Kouki-san!"
There is a silence between them before Furihata broke it with a burst of laughter.
"Hahahahaha!"
Noticing the weird gaze Hana gives to him, Furihata explained immediately.
"I am sorry, Hana-san! But you are really funny. You turned from being flustered, panicked, and suddenly determined just within ten seconds. You showed more expressions at the last minute than anytime I saw you, and I didn't really expect that."
Hana turned flustered once again before she pouted,
"Mou, Kouki-san. Please, don't tease me like that!"
"Yeah, yeah.."
They keep bickering for a while, not noticing the mischievous grin Furihata's mom has right now. She decided to not interrupt their conversation right now and let them have their sweet time. But she sure would use this moment to tease them to death in the future.
------------------------------------------------------------------
The next day, Furihata found himself getting swarmed by the other students who couldn't visit him when he was in the hospital.
"Furihata-san, how is your condition?"
"Are you okay? I saw the video, and it was really scary!"
"I also saw your game! You played really well! I am impressed!"
"Me too! I cannot believe there is someone that good in our class! The sports festival would be easier for us now!"
They keep firing Furihata with question after question until he was saved by the teacher who entered the room.
"Okay everyone, please be silent and take your seat!" When everyone is sitting in their seat, the teacher noticed Furihata is present.
"Furihata-san, it is good to see you again." He said with a surprised tone. "I didn't expect you will be here again this quickly. If you feel unwell, please let us know, okay?"
By now, almost everyone in the school knows about his and Kagami's condition, so they tried to give them an easier time here. Furihata just nodded gratefully as he replied,
"Thank you, Sensei."
Right after that, he spends the next five hours sitting in his seat, battling paper after paper that comes endlessly. First, it was math, followed by science, and then he has history, geography, and English, and the test ended with Japanese.
"Finally, it's over.." Furihata took a deep breath as he collected his answer from the teacher. When he leaves the room, he was greeted by Kagami and Kuroko.
"Yo, Bastard!" The red-hair called him. "Why do you come back to school this fast? Take your sweet time, man! You could escape this damn test if you want to."
Furihata just rolled his eyes slightly.
"Not everyone hates school like you, Red." Then, he turned around to Kuroko and asked, "By the way, Phantom, why do you look so tired?" With the deep bag under his eyes, Kuroko looks like a zombie, which kinda makes Furihata a bit curious as it is the first time he saw the blue-haired boy in such a mess like this.
"Oh, we just had a sleepover yesterday. I don't think I slept well last night."
"We?"
Noticing the confusion growing in Furihata's voice, he explained quickly.
"Me, Kagami-kun, Izuki-senpai, Tsuchida-senpai, Mitobe-senpai, Koganei-senpai, and Hyuga-senpai had a sleepover in Riko-senpai's home to prepare Kagami-kun for this exam. We don't want him to go to the remedial class."
"Is he really that bad?"
"He got 18 in the last English exam." That statement gives Furihata enough information about what headache the red-hair caused to his senpai.
"Really, Red? You grew up in America and your English score is that low?" However, Kagami just shrugged nonchalantly, clearly seeing his insults coming.
"Hey, it is really not my fault! I mean, you people who grew up in Japan also haven't always mastered the Japanese language fully. The score doesn't tell anything about people's ability to communicate!"
Furihata nodded in agreement, somehow a bit surprised that Kagami could be smart other than in basketball.
"I can see where you came from.." He nodded his head slightly. "But that wasn't a good excuse at all! We only covered how to search for the main points from the text and a bit of grammar! That should be easy enough for any 15 years-old who grew up in America, right? And Phantom, what about the other subject? Is that as horrifying as his English?"
"It is way worse than that." The blue-haired boy nodded as he answered shortly. Now, Furihata just staring at Kagami with a ridiculous face, pissing the red-haired boy off.
"Hey! Why are you looking at me like that? I am not that bad, you know? And also, I have a badass weapon that Kuroko gives to me before the exam! There is no way I would fail!"
"A weapon?" Furihata turned around at Kuroko, asking him silently about it.
"It is the gift from Midorima-kun." He said, "And it is not really a weapon. Just a four-sided pencil that has all four options written on each side, and if Kagami-kun is desperate, he can throw it off and choose your answer. From what I heard; it is the exam's lucky item from Oha Asa horoscope."
Now, Furihata raised his eyebrows and sneered mockingly at the red-haired boy.
"Really, Red? Out of all the gambling choices you have, you took the most desperate one? And why the hell did you use an item from Midorima? Did you feel you owe him something then?"
What he didn't expect though, was for Kagami to defend that pencil immediately.
"Hey, don't insult it like that! Just like I said, it is really a badass weapon and not just a mere gamble! I can feel it in my heart. There is no way I would fail this test. And as for it being from Midorima, I would just treat it as my spoil of war. I mean, I won against him, right?"
"Sure, you are. But if your result is still horrible, I would not take any mercy, okay?" Furihata has already prepared all his ammunition to tease the red-haired boy.
"Just you wait tomorrow, Bastard! I will show you the might of this weapon!"
And in the next day, when the result of the exam comes, it really surprises him. He was with the rest of the team in the club room, checking everyone's results.
"So, Kagami-kun, you know the consequence of failure, right?"
Furihata couldn't help but be curious when he saw everyone gulping nervously.
"What is the consequence?" He whispered to Fukuda beside him. However, the first-year center just shuddered at his question.
"Please, don't mention that. She will take it on us later." He whispered back, not wanting Riko to hear what he said. He could still remember a few days ago when she took all players to her home and cook for them. And from that, they know how terrible their coach is at cooking. Frankly speaking, any toddler would be able to make something better than her.
But Furihata didn't know that. He wanted to pester for a bit, but he was snapped by Kagami's confident voice.
"Just look at that." The red-haired boy handed his exam paper, showing them his score. Furihata could see a pretty normal score, which was dominated by the two digits number between 60 to 70. But to their senpai who fight tooth and nail to tutor Kagami, they couldn't believe what they just saw here.
"What kind of atrocity is this…" Hyuga mumbled under his breath. "How could you get 81 in modern literature?! You couldn't even read that much Kanji yesterday!"
He voiced the question that everyone thinks about. However, all they got is the smug grin on Kagami's face before the red hair showed his pencil.
"You see here, Bastard! That is the charm of this pencil! I passed this exam! Hahahaha!"
He couldn't help but feel giddy when he got the reaction he expected. The room turned dead silent as everyone looked at him with ridiculous expressions on their faces.
"You mean to tell me you got this score with this…. Pencil?" Seeing Kagami nod, Hyuga shot back another question. "So, what is the point of us tutoring you?"
"Hey, I am not asking for that too! You forced me to study with you lot!"
Hearing the ungrateful tone from Kagami, all the senpai members who tutored him smacked the red-hair on the back.
*Slap!*
"Ouch! What the hell, Senpai! I am injured here!"
"Injured my ass! You ungrateful bastard! I will force you to eat 'that' again!"
"NO!"
They keep bickering for a while until they were stopped by Riko.
"Okay, everyone! Enough about that." She spoke, stopping all the bickering in the room. "Anyway, there is still one person who I didn't know the result of his exam. Care to show us, Furihata-kun?"
Furihata rolled his eyes when everyone turned their eyes at him. He handed his exam result to his coach which caused an uproar among his senpai.
"Impossible…" They all have their eyes checked for a moment, trying to make sure the result in front of them is real. The other first-years couldn't help but be curious about the result as well, so they decided to peek at the paper too,
"What is it? Is his result worse than mine?"
Furihata just rolled his eyes at Kagami's question but didn't give any answer immediately. He just let his senpai explain this to the other as he didn't want to sound arrogant, which he actually is.
"Contrary to your beliefs, Kagami-kun.." Hyuga answered the question. "He is not that stupid. In fact, he is way too smart Look at here."
Then, they all saw Furihata's result, and they could see a lot of 100 line up in his paper, and when they saw his cumulative rank, they couldn't help but gulp.
