7: Wait A Bit Longer

Seija felt pretty different after her awakening.

It was currently the next day after her mother unlocked her chakra, and most of her mind was occupied by more questions about that surge of memories. But at the same time, she felt calm. Because now she knew why she couldn't receive the answers to those questions. She simply wasn't ready yet.

Her brain was still too young. Her mind too immature to handle the burden of all that information. The only scrap she managed to maintain was the image of the people with the white eyes. And the name of those eyes that she spoke in her mind as she activated them. The Byakugan. And even that knowledge gave her a small headache for about six hours after she woke up. She couldn't imagine trying to stuff everything else in as well!

She was honestly relieved to know that the reason why she couldn't recall information about Nagato, Hashirama, Danzo, and all that other stuff was simply because she was too young. After all, now she knew that the information would come to her eventually and she didn't have to spend time thinking about it. That was huge! Now she could think about other stuff, like her fancy new eyes!

She stood up from her bed and headed to the bathroom, locking the door behind her once she entered.

[Byakugan]

Her eyes turned white and her veins expanded once again. And this time, without the awful burning sensation of her awakening getting in the way, she could feel the strain of using these eyes slowly building up. Roughly counting the time in her head she figured she could keep them active for about 50 or 60 seconds before having to let them rest. She didn't yet know how long they would need to rest once she did use them to their limit, so she would have to test that later. For now she would use them to look around!

Expanding her vision to its limit she was frustrated to find a small blind spot at the very back, but she could live with it. As she looked around at the now see-through environment her eyes locked on to two things.

First was her father, and his chakra core.

'Whoa... is that what would've happened to my core if I'd failed?' She shivered thinking about it.

It was like the charcoal and ash left behind in their fireplace when the last log burned away. Still slightly smoldering with a few small specks of light, but otherwise completely burned out. Almost lifeless.

The second was her mother, and the strange rectangular formation placed over her eyes. She couldn't see through it with her Byakugan no matter how hard she tried, and unintentionally hit the limit while doing so. She deacivated it, her eyes regaining their black pupils.

'I won't push it further. Let's see how long it takes to recover. Guess I'll talk to mommy while that's doing that.'

She left the bathroom behind her and headed down past the living room where her father was reading a book of some kind. She gave him a small wave and continued on to the kitchen.

"Hey mommy! Something fun happened."

"Oh? Do tell, darling. What is it?" Himiko put down the cup she was washing and turned to face her daughter.

"Yeah... my eyes went weird earlier and it was really cool! I could see through walls and stuff!"

"...Oh my..."

Himiko froze and seemed to fall into thought. Seija could just make out a few muttered words like "she has it..." and "so soon..." and she decided to speak up about what she saw.

"So um... you have something weird on your eyes. I couldn't see it though... Are you ok, mommy?"

"Wh- uh... *ahem* Yes dear I'm ok. You see, those eyes are a genetic ability of my family. We called it the Byakugan. I was just shocked that you could use it, since your father's genetics are rather unpredictable at the best of times."

"Gene... what?"

"Genetics are the features that a mother and father copy and pass down from their own bodies to their child's when they have one together." She answered smoothly. Almost like she'd practiced that line for some reason.

'Weird.' Seija thought, but ultimately dismissed. Always nice to learn a new word after all.

"Anyways, it normally emerges at least a year after your chakra awakening, so it's rather surprising that you have it now, only a day after your awakening. I guess your uniquness truly doesn't end, does it my darling little genius?"

As much as she liked being praised, Seija's question was still left unanswered.

"But what's the thing on your eyes?"

"Ah... well... you see..." She took a deep breath before nodding to herself, deciding to be honest about it.

"My family and I had a bit of a falling out. They were all very traditional, and I was very rebellious."

"Rebellious?"

"I didn't like the things they told me, basically. 'Oh, you have to marry this third cousin of yours,' 'No you can't learn Ninjutsu you only need the signature Hyuga Taijutsu,' 'You have to stay in the clan compound at all times when not on a mission- Blah blah blah!' She ranted.

"I hated them, and they hated me! So I left. I asked the Third Hokage to officially move me into a new appartment on the other side of Konohagakure, in a safe area for other Jonin-rank ninjas like myself. My so-called 'family' couldn't touch me there, though they wouldn't be able to even if they tried. I was strong enough that they couldn't risk sending someone to try and draw a Caged Bird Seal on me without them losing a limb, or worse."

"Uh... mommy? You're going weird..." Seija was mostly just confused by all the funny new words at this point.

"Right! Yes, sorry I kind of ranted at you there. Anyways, this is just a sealing tag I placed over my eyes to make them a different color. My family have completely white eyes, including myself, so I need to keep them hidden like this so that nobody realises I'm a Hyuga. That's our family name, by the way."

"But if you covered your eyes... how do you see?"

"...That's what you were confused about? Whatever, here." She slid the nail of her thumb underneath something invisible that was on her face, and peeled it off. Behind it, her eyes were indeed white, like the people in Seija's memories, and the tag in her hand had become fully visible, revealing a rectangular piece of beige paper with a red border and covered in strange black runes that Seija didn't even try to figure out.

"See? Just like that." She carefully placed the tag back on her face and smoothed it out over her skin, and the runes flashed bright blue for a moment before the whole thing vanished, and Himiko appeared to have blue eyes again.

"Anyways Seija, I trust that you'll keep all that a secret, my little genius. You understand how important it is to me that this secret stays hidden, right?"

"Yep! It's super secret!"

"Fantastic. Now, tomorrow I think it'll be time to teach you some proper chakra control. It's been a full 24 hours now and you still haven't had any chakra-flares, so we can be pretty certain that your chakra is settled and ready to be trained. How does that sound?"

"Really?! Will I be able to do that water thingy that you did during the fire flares?"

"Hahah, maybe one day. That's not even my specialty, you know? For now, you'll be learning to perform the Leaf Sticking excercise. You'll just have to stick a leaf to your head with nothing but chakra. Since you can already activate your Byakugan with seemingly no issues though, I bet you'll nail that in less than an hour! Maybe I could start teaching you the basics of hand signs after that, hmm?"

Needless to say, Seija couldn't wait for tomorrow.
