Chapter 37: Ending the suffering

'Is everyone dead?' Liam wondered the longer he was surrounded by the all too familiar, studious, and quiet atmosphere of the library.

It was a little bit ominous since there were a few corpses everywhere but Liam couldn't see any monsters on the first floor. The only corpses were of humans as well.

'Were the monster corpses stored away, or devoured by something bigger?'

There weren't many clues about the disappearance of the monsters that had charged inside the library or the hundreds of students and other people who were said to be inside the library at any time of the day.

"Even if some rof them managed to run out of the library, there should be more corpses, or living people preferably," Liam mumbled mostly to himself but Olivia and the others agreed.

"Maybe there are some on the second floor or the roofto–..." Kian began but stopped abruptly when screams of terror resounded from above them all of a sudden.

"ARGHhhhhhhh…help meee!!!" The shrill cry of a woman bounced off the walls of the library, sending a shiver down everyone's spine. Their heads turned upward as if it was possible to look through the ceiling and see what was going on the second floor.

As Liam and the others looked upward, he saw something from the corner of his eye. Turning his head to his left, he saw something falling to the ground outside the library. A loud scream was followed by a sickening thud as the body collapsed on the ground. That answered most of his questions almost instantaneously.

"Looks like they're on the rooftop, with some monsters," He said, averting his gaze from the writhing body of a middle-aged woman and three Meheks that were feasting on her flesh. She was still moving and alive but the injuries were already too great to do something. The Meheks claws were already deep inside the flesh of the woman.

Somehow, the flesh of the woman looked a little bit weird, almost as if the Meheks had used their weight to pull the woman's flesh from her bones.

Liam could only guess that the Meheks attacked the woman and that they used their weight to push her down the rooftop of the library. He didn't really know the truth nor he had any intention of figuring it out since it would do him little good.

"Shouldn't we help her?" Rex asked uneasily, readying his spear to help the writhing woman when Liam moved over to the large hole in the glass window before his hand moved rapidly, sending four black glowing needles into the head of the woman and the three Meheks.

He had used his full force to attack the three Meheks and the woman but he couldn't be sure if that would be enough to kill them. After all, he had yet to test the lethality of the poison within the Black Tarthear Needles.

From his little knowledge of poison, the Black Tarthear Needles had a lethal ingredient that paralyzed its opponents and corroded their bodies. The more Arcane Power used the higher the potency of the needles' poison would become until it would reach a degree where even the wielder might face difficulties if the Black Tarthear Needles would come in contact with his skin.

Of course, there were limits to how much the poison of the Black Tarthear Needle could be enhanced but that shouldn't be an issue for now.

He rushed to the staircase of the library's first floor after throwing the needles at his designated targets, leaving behind the students who stared at the monsters and the writhing woman for a few more seconds.

"Did he just kill her?" A sudden voice of a terrified student asked, his voice trembling in fright as he saw that the woman had stopped moving altogether. His body stiffened while the Meheks continued to eat her flesh for a second or two until they collapsed as well.

"She was already dead, basically. He saved her from unnecessary suffering," Olivia corrected him before she followed Liam as well. The other students began to tremble, swallowed their saliva, or suppressed the emotions that erupted all of a sudden at the sight of the woman who had just been eaten alive by vicious monsters. They could not look away from the grotesque sight of her mangled, half-eaten body and it took them a few seconds before they followed Liam.

The library had two floors with the upper level featuring a balcony. The shelves on the second floor were filled with more detailed, specialized texts and rare books. As for the rooftop of the library, it had been converted into a café, offering peaceful space and some respite after some long and lonely hours of studying.

After Liam began to run, he found himself quickly reaching the second floor where he found a few Meheks feeding on dead bodies. The corpses belonged to both their brethren, and humans which caused him to frown deeply.

'Didn't know that they were cannibalists…you learn something new every single day…' He thought just before he received a notification.

It was obvious that the notification was because of the woman whom he had killed at the end. He received the full contribution for her kill, which was rather weird but before he could mull over it further three more notifications appeared in front of him.

The moment he knew how much he could gain from killing the Meheks, both of his hands reached out to the Casket of Trickery. He retrieved a few Black Tarthear Needles and threw them at the ordinary Meheks that were feeding on the bodies of their brethren and humans alike.

The gains he made from every thrown needle were more than the costs of the needle. Thus, it was only logical that he killed the monsters that were in his way, not only for himself but also to make sure that the rest of the students could retreat once the trouble on the rooftop was taken care of.

However, that was easier said than done because it took Liam only a few seconds to throw more than twenty Black Tarthear Needles and to get to the rooftop where an interesting sight was unveiled to him.

"Oh shit…"

Chapter 38: Ferocious Warrior

What unveiled itself in front of Liam when he arrived on the rooftop were more than a hundred Meheks. There were a few Ordinary Meheks but most of them were either Agile Meheks or Heavy Meheks.

They had a precise attack pattern that allowed them to instill fear into their opponents and to make use of that fear in a long hunting process, feeding on their fear and toying with them until their prey grew exhausted.

Usually, Meheks would inflict a few wounds on their opponents before pushing them into the corner. The more desperate their prey became the easier it was to hunt them. Emotions such as fear and desperation would inevitably lead to mistakes, and that was exactly what the Meheks exploited to the fullest.

They would slowly bleed out their opponent, drain it of its vigor and fighting spirit until the perfect opportunity for a final blow unveiled itself in front of them. Liam had already figured that such an opportunity had appeared when they had attacked the woman, pushing her from the rooftop in a suicidal manner.

The same tactic was applied to a few more injured men and women who were attacked by Ordinary Meheks that dug their claws into the humans' flesh to hook themselves onto their prey before mercilessly dragging them down to the ground alongwith themselves.

The Meheks wouldn't die from a fall of ten meters since they were said to have similar traits to cats when it came to falling from great heights.

But witnessing the suicidal tactics of the Meheks was not the most surprising to Liam. He found it more interesting to see that more than two dozen people were in possession of weapons which they wielded rather clumsily.

'Quick actions when it comes to assessing the situation but no real combat experience with weapons…that's better than expected!' Liam thought while recalling that the students behind him would have been dead if not for him helping them out. Olivia and the others had grown tough skin and may be quite useful by now but the people that were fending for themselves for almost a day and still alive, without having received any help at that, were even more intriguing to him.

The two dozen combatants were doing their utmost to protect the people behind them, which was also something Liam regarded highly. If he was in their position, the deadweight would have been abandoned a long time ago.

Fortunately, he was not in their situation, which meant that he could give them a helping hand and further reinsure that the gymnasium would gain more useful combatants to protect everyone.

Liam's hands reached for the Casket of Trickery and he retrieved a handful of Black Tarthear Needles at once while not taking his eyes off the situation even for a second.

Not many had noticed that Liam had arrived on the rooftop. Those who were still able to fight were desperately trying to stall more time and to turn the tides of the battle, even if they had no idea how to do so.

Meanwhile, the other people were shivering in fright, tending to their wounds and trying to figure out how to escape their tricky situation. None of them dared utter a sound as they did not want the monsters to be attracted by the noises and lunge at them. Meheks seemed to have an acute sense of hearing and would violently pounce in the direction of the noises around them, which was also the cause of death for most humans on the second floor. They screamed too much, disturbing the rhythm of the hunting process of the Meheks that began scattering in search of prey all over the floor.

Liam took note of all of this, but it was not as if he was too bothered when it came to fighting a hundred Meheks. He knew that Olivia, Rex and Kian had already arrived behind him, shortly followed by the remaining dozen students, and he forced them to join the battle against the Meheks by charging ahead.

He triggered his Soultrait while his feet splashed in the water that had accumulated on the flat surface of the rooftop before throwing the black needles toward his opponents.

His storage for Arcane Power was large even though his status labeled his Arcane Power merely as [E]. That was closely related to his heritage and it was something Liam didn't hesitate to abuse.

He retrieved several more Black Tarthear Needles in the blink of an eye and threw them at the Meheks that had yet to turn their heads toward him. The Agile Meheks were the fastest to react. They turned in his direction and charged at him without a trace of hesitation. Liam expected this but he didn't stop his advance in the slightest.

On the contrary, he pushed forward and accelerated further while circulating more Arcane Power through his arms. The speed with which he moved his arms accelerated and it was possible for him to release a third batch of Black Tarthear Needles before he was forced to face the Agile Meheks head-on.

More than a dozen notifications had already popped up in the corner of his eyes but he ignored them skilfully as his hands reshaped themselves into claws. He twisted his body the moment his Devil's Eyes perceived a subtle change in the trajectory of the closest Agile Mehek and pierced out with his claw while evading the attack of the monster that was much faster than him.

[Agile Mehek has been slayed.]

Liam analyzed the movement pattern of the Agile Meheks that followed up with more attacks and he evaded them smoothly with his flexible body and an accurate prediction of his opponents' movements. His eyes that looked like sealed galaxies seemed to know everything, yet the Agile Meheks didn't seem to realize that.

Their wild instincts didn't blare a warning signal at them despite facing the terrific monster whose claws pierced through their brethren's hearts and throats, shredding their bodies like a piece of fabric. Thus, Liam left behind a trail of blood and corpses as he closed in on his opponents. He continued attacking relentlessly and it was only a matter of minutes before he ended up in the midst of the Meheks, attacked from all directions, causing desperation in the minds of the monsters who had tortured the students in the library for the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the flood of notifications in the corner of his eyes kept expanding just like the hope of the desperate men and women seemed to increase exponentially at the arrival of the ferocious warrior, who tore apart his opponents as if they were made of tofu.
