Chapter 31: Throw

After the Blanchal Silk Gloves were filled with Arcane Power, it began to circulate through his hands. The Arcane Power that was led through his hands reached the tip of his fingers before it was led back inside the gloves effortlessly.

The circulation was natural and well-maintained without the leakage of even an ounce of Arcane Power from the gloves. That was exactly what Liam had hoped for since the circulation of Arcane Power enhanced the dexterity of his fingers.

Releasing his claws, Liam took note that their sharpness and durability them was reinforced as well.

'Good, there is nothing wrong with that!' He was satisfied with his purchase and could sense that his claws were much harder than steel. The sharpness of his claws had already been much better than the sharp blades of steel weapons, to begin with, but it was only now that he was confident to easily tear through the fur of the Elite Ratatuo. In fact, it would feel like a hot knife cutting through warm butter!

Of course, Liam knew how the natural circulation of Arcane Power would react to his claws, and that the Arcane Power would sharpen them. It was not as if his body had changed just because his powers disappeared.

There was a little difference between losing his powers, awakening a different Soultrait, and being in possession of a body that reacted differently to Arcane Power as it did in the past.

The latter was fortunately not the case, otherwise, purchasing the Blanchal Silk Gloves could have turned into a big mistake.

But now that everything went according to his plan, the only thing he was missing out on was experimenting with the traits of the Black Tarthear Needles. It was necessary to know how fast the needles would fly if he threw them with his full strength, how far they could fly, how much damage they did and the limits of the needles.

He didn't want to mistakenly attack a monster with an extremely tough hide or other sharper defenses and waste his Black Tarthear Needles that way. Knowing the limits of his weapons was important, it could save him from trouble in the future.

Thus, he got up from the ground. He stretched his body and walked across the entire gymnasium before he ended up in the large sports equipment room. There weren't many things in the equipment room but that was perfectly fine since he didn't need much.

He got hold of two thin wooden benches that were three meters long and he carried them back to the corner of the large hall. When he returned back to the place he had rested for a short while, Liam took note of the students and other people who slept more or less soundly.

'She is here as well?' He noticed the young woman, who had nearly been raped, sleeping not too far from the place he had rested until a few minutes ago. Her clothes were stained red from the dried blood of the head coach and it was quite obvious that she was having a nightmare as she slept in the fetal position and flinched every now and then.

Nonetheless, the fact that she could fall asleep was astonishing as most natives weren't capable of doing that since their minds were still being haunted by the events of the previous day.

Liam was quite surprised to find out how easily the students digested that their reality had been turned upside down. All of them were still sleeping, even though they had been the most afraid when the masses of rats had first attacked them.

'Thinking about it, they seemed to have accepted the new reality quite quickly,' Liam figured, not sure how he would have reacted in their shoes. He couldn't really imagine what it would feel like to have a calm and peaceful life.

Liam placed the wooden benches next to each other in a vertical position. The benches rested against the wall, which was more than good enough for what he wanted to test.

Liam took one big step backward, retrieved one needle, and threw it toward the wooden bench with some force. The tip of the needle dug into the wood before it was forcefully stopped. Thus, Liam used his full force to throw the second Black Tartheart needle toward the wooden bench.

The force was considerable and it was more than enough for most of the needle to cut through the wood. Liam nodded his head feeling somewhat satisfied and he took another step back.

He was slowly getting hang of the feeling and threw a few more Black Tartheart needles toward the wooden bench. None of his attacks missed but the strength he used for every throw was vastly different.

While testing out a bunch of things, Liam ended up throwing more than a hundred Black Tartheart needles in the next few minutes. He retrieved the needles afterward, and stored them back in the Casket of Trickery just to take a few steps back.

When the distance between him and the wooden benches crossed five meters, Liam began to aim precisely at the different areas of the wooden benches while he was walking around seemingly aimless. He was trying to smoothly retrieve the Black Tartheart needles from the Casket of Trickery and implement the necessary movements in his natural walk.

Time passed quickly but he was slowly getting the hang of the situation. He kept increasing the distance to the wooden benches, yet his aim remained as precise as before. This was a predicted outcome since he was not only versatile and trained with most weapons but the dexterity of his hand was also artificially enhanced through the Arcane Power that circulated through his veins.

Liam was ambidextrous which made things even more interesting. The only issue he faced was to figure out how exactly he should place the Casket of Trickery to remain undiscovered to the enemy eye yet be easily accessible by both hands. In the end, Liam chose to put the Casket of Trickery behind his back. He couldn't reach the trigger of the Casket with both hands, not smoothly at least but he could use a trace of Arcane Power to trigger the mechanism of the Casket of Trickery.

It was pretty easy for someone like him to use and he could tell that his motions were getting smoother with time. That feeling was addictive and hard to replicate. After all, it was rare to learn something new and improve rapidly while doing it for the first time.

'Looks like I didn't lose my talent to throw stuff…even if it's not throwing a fit…'

Chapter 32: No Fucks Given

By the time the sun rose over the horizon, Liam finished his training. He collected the hundreds of Black Tarthear Needles that he had thrown into the wooden benches during his short practice session before they broke apart.

The wooden benches had been riddled with holes due to numerous needles that had been thrown by Liam with tremendous force.

'At least they were somewhat useful,' Liam thought while looking at the wooden benches. He was sweating buckets but he was still feeling fine and vigorous. His condition was certainly better than it had been during the entirety of the previous day, that was for sure!

His shirt was wet again due to all the sweat but other than that he had dried. Moving around with dried pants and shoes was certainly more comfortable than wet clothes clinging to his body.

Looking at the current situation in the hall, Liam nodded his head subtly. It was time for him to leave the gymnasium since he wanted to find more survivors. Bringing them over to the gymnasium would be the easiest way to make sure that he could increase the number of natives he protected actively and passively, thereby improving his mission score.

That was what he had planned to achieve before using up his entire Arcanium to buy the Black Tarthear needles, the Casket of Trickery and the Blanchal Silk Gloves. If not for his plan, he wouldn't have chosen to fight with his claws. Sooner or later someone would suspect his origin even if he were to use some excuses to convince others that he was actually human, which was simply not true, not entirely at least.

One way or another, he was one of the many infiltrators since he came from a different Realm. It didn't even matter whether he wanted to obliterate all native humans from Haltan or not.

Because Liam understood his situation pretty well, he chose not to give a fuck about his secret anymore. Wearing the Devil Mask was merely something he needed to gain more trust from the natives until his mission was completed. As for protecting his secret identity in any other way, Liam didn't think that it was necessary, not anymore.

He was not afraid of the natives since they acted similarly to the humans in the Overworld. The only difference Liam had perceived until now was that the natives were weaker. Their physical strength might not be necessarily weaker but their hearts were too soft.

None of them seems to have gone through the same hardships most beings in the Overworld had gone through. Being born and raised in lands filled with war was different than being born in a peaceful area where death seemed to be something foreign and distant.

That was clearly visible right now as well. It hadn't been a full day since the Arcane Apocalypse started and almost everyone was still shell-shocked. The natives required some more time to digest everything that had happened and was paralyzed with fear, but it was not as if the infiltrators would give them that much time.

It was already a great fortune that the night had passed without any big incidents. The gymnasium was still standing strong, which was great.

When his gaze landed on the students around him, Liam halted in his tracks. He squinted his eyes and looked at the faces of every student around him. There weren't all students whom he had saved the day before but more than fifteen students between the age of 16 and 19 were staring straight back at him, looking at Liam as if he was their master, lord, and savior.

'I don't want to raise kids yet…'

Liam was trying hard to maintain his pokerface as he analyzed their current mental condition. They seemed to be overly reliant on him, but other than that, their condition and overall responsiveness had improved quite decently. At least, some of them were doing a lot better now.

"What are you guys planning to do after the rain stops?" He asked them without even realizing it. His expression changed a bit when he noticed what he had just asked but he tried to hide his surprise as well as possible.

The students continued to stare at him and nobody muttered a word for the time being until Olivia stepped forward.

"I will follow you until I have repaid my debt. If I return to my family while I'm still indebted to you, I will tarnish the reputation of my family!" She declared with a stern expression.

Liam could tell that Olivia was strong-willed but he didn't really feel like raising someone like Olivia. He had other things to take care of, not some natives who were rookies to the ways of the Nine Realms.

"As long as you don't reject me, I would like to follow you as well. I will give my utmost to become a valuable asset to your team!" Kian said with a considerable amount of confidence in his voice. He had made a few mistakes the day before, mistakes that shattered his pride and confidence a little, but after some sleep, he was ready to make up for the mess he created.

"Me too!"

"I feel the same…"

Liam was trying hard to keep a composed expression but he could only shake his head at that. It was quite obvious that most, if not all of them were trying to ride his coattail. They figured that he was strong and that his pieces of advice had proven correct and saved them a lot of trouble, increasing their confidence in him tremendously.

It was quite obvious that the students believed that everything would be fine as long as they were near him, the only person who could keep everyone together and safe the day before.

"Does that mean everyone is ready to fight with their life on the line, every single day?" Liam asked rather calmly. He didn't think that it would be helpful to intimidate anyone by using a sharp or dominating voice. On the contrary, his calm voice turned the situation even more serious because they feared that was exactly what may happen while fighting by Liam's side.

Most students stared blankly at him for several seconds, which was enough for Liam to understand that he had driven the point home.

"Either way…I will bring in a few more survivors. Think about what I asked, and make your decision," Liam said as if he was giving them a choice before he turned away, while quietly muttering to himself,

"...and stay away from me!"
