Chapter 30: Armed to the teeth...or not

[1x『500 Black Tarthear Needles (D Rank)』, 1x『Casket of Trickery (E- Rank)』, 1x『Blanchal Silk Gloves (C- Rank)』have been purchased. 150 Arcanium have been deducted!]

A pair of white, fingerless gloves, and two small black boxes materialized in front of Liam. He reached out to them and smiled lightly.

The fabric of the gloves was extremely thin and the color perfectly matched the skin tone of Liam which made it seem as if he wasn't wearing anything when he put them on.

As for the two black boxes, one was the Casket of Trickery. It was black in color with a small button on the left side. The backside of the Casket of Trickery had two loops which made it easy for him to attach it to his belt. Overall, the Casket of Trickery was ten centimeters long, five centimeters wide, and not even two centimeters in height.

It was an extremely small box with a simple, yet extremely important function…the Casket of Trickery could store a total of 500 needles inside and release one at a time under the influx of Arcane Power or by pressing the small button on the left side.

That was a sleek mechanism behind the Casket of Trickery that could barely be perceived when someone wore a black belt!

[『Casket of Trickery』–Circleless Accesory(E- Rank)–

Description: Simple box that fits 500 Needles. It can dispense one Needle whenever accessed through the trigger on the left. Arcane Power can function as a trigger as well.

Remark: Customized item for 500 Tarthear Needles. May not fit other Needles!]

The Casket of Trickery had a unique name but it was a rather simple box. Nonetheless, it cost Liam five Arcanium which was not cheap under the current circumstances. Liam was pretty sure that it was worth the investment since it would allow him to move much more smoothly when initiating sudden attacks with the Black Tarthear Needles and taking his enemy by surprise, but that was only something the future could tell.

He opened the other box in which the 500 Black Tarthear Needles were stored and transferred them into the Casket of Trickery. Afterward, he was testing a few things such as the functioning of the Casket's dispenser and how easy it was to use the Black Tarthear Needles.

Liam rarely used needles or similar means to fight his opponents in the past. The fighting style of an assassin hadn't been suitable for him since his combat style was usually brutal and straightforward not deceptive or cunning.

That had always been enough for him to defeat his opponents since he was resilient like a cockroach. Being hard to kill had been quite an advantage in the past but that didn't mean he was the same as before, especially since he was not in possession of the same Soultrait as before.

That was also why he had gotten his hands on a hidden weapon, small and deadly, and perfect to use against his current opponents.

[『500 Black Tarthear Needles』–Circleless Hidden Weapon(D Rank)–

Description: The destructiveness of the Black Tarthear Needle is the same as an ordinary needle if not used with Arcane Power. Coated with Arcane Power the Black Tarthear Needle unfolds its true prowess. Poison will spread through the designated target upon contact with anything that possesses Arcane Power!

Remark: Don't play around with it, or you may accidentally kill your own comrades. Many have experienced this!]

Not using any Arcane Power turned the Black Tarthear Needles into ordinary black-colored needles. They were special since they were created from a unique metal that released a toxin after it came in contact with Arcane Power. The Black Tarthear Needles were adjusted to make sure that the wielder won't sustain any injuries if the needles coated in Arcane Power won't remain in his hands for more than five seconds.

The 500 needles cost him 45 Arcanium, which meant that the set of needles and the Casket of Trickery cost him a total of 50 Arcanium. That was quite a lot, considering that the Black Tarthear Needles were hard to locate and retrieve once they hit their target.

Liam didn't think that he would have enough time to search for a bunch of needles in the middle of a fight. Thus, he considered them a one-time use item, which meant that he had to earn 1 Arcanium for every 10 Black Tarthear Needles he used to make up for the loss.

But Liam didn't plan to earn back just what he invested. He wanted to make big profits with the Black Tarthear Needles since it was a waste of precious resources to throw the needles at ordinary huge rats, or the ordinary Meheks.

However, even if the Casket of Trickery and the 500 Black Tarthear Needles had been expensive, the Blanchal Silk Gloves were certainly the most expensive item Liam purchased from the Arcane Shop.

The Blanchal Silk Gloves were fingerless which was a necessity since it allowed Liam to fight with his hands and give room to let them morph into claws while also using the Black Tarthear Needles. The steel battle-axe was not essential anymore even though Liam chose to carry it around with him. After all, it might come in handy in the future.

Liam didn't think that it would be necessary since the Blanchal Silk Gloves were exceptional but he might be mistaken.

[『Blanchal Silk Gloves』–Circleless Armament(C- Rank)–

Description: The Blanchal Silk Gloves are made from the silk of a Blanchal Silkworm. The silk is known for its great conductivity of Arcane Power and the effect to store Arcane Power inside it.

Once filled to the brim, the gloves will naturally circulate Arcane Power through the wearer's hands.

The stored Arcane Power can be controlled freely and it can be released in an instant if desired.

Remark: The surge of Arcane Power can damage the wearer's hands if not controlled properly!]

The Blanchal Silk Gloves were very helpful for Liam since he could use the Arcane Power stored inside the gloves to reinforce his claws if necessary.

In the worst case, he could even use the Arcane Power inside the Blanchal Silk Gloves to trigger the effect of the Black Tarthear Needles. It was great to have a small storage of Arcane Power that could be controlled freely.

Liam tried to fill the Blanchal Silk Gloves with his Arcane Power but he noticed quickly that the gloves had a storage capacity that exceeded the Arcane Power his body could hold at once.

It was not much of a difference but it was more than enough for Liam to nod his head in satisfaction. The Blanchal Silk Gloves cost him 100 Arcanium, which was also why it had been a hard decision to arrive at and he had spent some time debating whether he should purchase them, or if it would be better to purchase a weapon for the same price.

In the end, Liam chose the Blanchal Silk Gloves since he required more Arcane Power, to begin with. His Devil's Eyes Soultrait required a considerable amount of Arcane Power to be triggered and to sustain it and the same could be said about the Black Tartheart Needles. If he were to use many of them within a short period of time, his Arcane Power would be drained real quick.

Of course, there was more to Liam's purchase!

Chapter 31: Throw

After the Blanchal Silk Gloves were filled with Arcane Power, it began to circulate through his hands. The Arcane Power that was led through his hands reached the tip of his fingers before it was led back inside the gloves effortlessly.

The circulation was natural and well-maintained without the leakage of even an ounce of Arcane Power from the gloves. That was exactly what Liam had hoped for since the circulation of Arcane Power enhanced the dexterity of his fingers.

Releasing his claws, Liam took note that their sharpness and durability them was reinforced as well.

'Good, there is nothing wrong with that!' He was satisfied with his purchase and could sense that his claws were much harder than steel. The sharpness of his claws had already been much better than the sharp blades of steel weapons, to begin with, but it was only now that he was confident to easily tear through the fur of the Elite Ratatuo. In fact, it would feel like a hot knife cutting through warm butter!

Of course, Liam knew how the natural circulation of Arcane Power would react to his claws, and that the Arcane Power would sharpen them. It was not as if his body had changed just because his powers disappeared.

There was a little difference between losing his powers, awakening a different Soultrait, and being in possession of a body that reacted differently to Arcane Power as it did in the past.

The latter was fortunately not the case, otherwise, purchasing the Blanchal Silk Gloves could have turned into a big mistake.

But now that everything went according to his plan, the only thing he was missing out on was experimenting with the traits of the Black Tarthear Needles. It was necessary to know how fast the needles would fly if he threw them with his full strength, how far they could fly, how much damage they did and the limits of the needles.

He didn't want to mistakenly attack a monster with an extremely tough hide or other sharper defenses and waste his Black Tarthear Needles that way. Knowing the limits of his weapons was important, it could save him from trouble in the future.

Thus, he got up from the ground. He stretched his body and walked across the entire gymnasium before he ended up in the large sports equipment room. There weren't many things in the equipment room but that was perfectly fine since he didn't need much.

He got hold of two thin wooden benches that were three meters long and he carried them back to the corner of the large hall. When he returned back to the place he had rested for a short while, Liam took note of the students and other people who slept more or less soundly.

'She is here as well?' He noticed the young woman, who had nearly been raped, sleeping not too far from the place he had rested until a few minutes ago. Her clothes were stained red from the dried blood of the head coach and it was quite obvious that she was having a nightmare as she slept in the fetal position and flinched every now and then.

Nonetheless, the fact that she could fall asleep was astonishing as most natives weren't capable of doing that since their minds were still being haunted by the events of the previous day.

Liam was quite surprised to find out how easily the students digested that their reality had been turned upside down. All of them were still sleeping, even though they had been the most afraid when the masses of rats had first attacked them.

'Thinking about it, they seemed to have accepted the new reality quite quickly,' Liam figured, not sure how he would have reacted in their shoes. He couldn't really imagine what it would feel like to have a calm and peaceful life.

Liam placed the wooden benches next to each other in a vertical position. The benches rested against the wall, which was more than good enough for what he wanted to test.

Liam took one big step backward, retrieved one needle, and threw it toward the wooden bench with some force. The tip of the needle dug into the wood before it was forcefully stopped. Thus, Liam used his full force to throw the second Black Tartheart needle toward the wooden bench.

The force was considerable and it was more than enough for most of the needle to cut through the wood. Liam nodded his head feeling somewhat satisfied and he took another step back.

He was slowly getting hang of the feeling and threw a few more Black Tartheart needles toward the wooden bench. None of his attacks missed but the strength he used for every throw was vastly different.

While testing out a bunch of things, Liam ended up throwing more than a hundred Black Tartheart needles in the next few minutes. He retrieved the needles afterward, and stored them back in the Casket of Trickery just to take a few steps back.

When the distance between him and the wooden benches crossed five meters, Liam began to aim precisely at the different areas of the wooden benches while he was walking around seemingly aimless. He was trying to smoothly retrieve the Black Tartheart needles from the Casket of Trickery and implement the necessary movements in his natural walk.

Time passed quickly but he was slowly getting the hang of the situation. He kept increasing the distance to the wooden benches, yet his aim remained as precise as before. This was a predicted outcome since he was not only versatile and trained with most weapons but the dexterity of his hand was also artificially enhanced through the Arcane Power that circulated through his veins.

Liam was ambidextrous which made things even more interesting. The only issue he faced was to figure out how exactly he should place the Casket of Trickery to remain undiscovered to the enemy eye yet be easily accessible by both hands. In the end, Liam chose to put the Casket of Trickery behind his back. He couldn't reach the trigger of the Casket with both hands, not smoothly at least but he could use a trace of Arcane Power to trigger the mechanism of the Casket of Trickery.

It was pretty easy for someone like him to use and he could tell that his motions were getting smoother with time. That feeling was addictive and hard to replicate. After all, it was rare to learn something new and improve rapidly while doing it for the first time.

'Looks like I didn't lose my talent to throw stuff…even if it's not throwing a fit…'
