Chapter 22: Suspicion

The battle between Liam and Felix, if one could call it that, to begin with, ended in an instant.

Felix had run straight toward Liam, whose upper body had leaned back just for his leg to flick up the moment Felix was about to reach for Liam's shoulders.

The moment Felix's head was pushed upward, Liam jerked forward to press the battle-axe's blade against his neck.

Everyone stared blankly at the two combatants. There was almost nobody in the city who didn't know Felix or was oblivious to his strength. Thus, it was an even bigger surprise to see how easily he had been defeated, especially after Felix's speed had increased so suddenly.

"I hope that you can create a strong defense in the gym. Did you consider turning it into a fortress?" Liam asked nonchalantly as he reached forward with his free hand.

He retracted the battle axe and acted as if the fight between them had never happened.

"Huh? What?" Felix responded barely. His mind was still shut off after realization struck him. He had been defeated in the blink of an eye, seemingly effortlessly!

Liam looked at Felix and reconsidered something for a moment before he sighed deeply.

'Should I rest for a bit, or go out and pull more Natives into the gymnasium?...Will the system count them as the people I saved here, to begin with? Probably not…I didn't really do much to save the Natives who were already inside, to begin with. If all those I saved personally are added by the system, I should have saved enough to finish the mission…but they might not survive until the rain stops. It might continue to rain for a few days, after all…so securing the gym is the most important…I guess?'

Liam's mind was rattling. He wanted to receive the additional rewards of his customized mission. To achieve that he had to protect as many Natives as possible.

"If you want to become stronger you should think about turning the gymnasium into your first hideout, or even a fortress. I will seal the entrances to make sure nobody will be able to enter the gymnasium unnoticed. Will you help, or are you playing to stay here like these hoodlums?" Liam asked, changing his question a little as he pointed at the idiotic young athlete who had pointed his sword at him before.

The young athlete was just about to grumble or snap at him when he began to shudder. He recalled how Liam had defeated him and Felix without breaking a sweat.

It was obvious that Liam was different from them…he was dangerous, far more dangerous than they assumed him to be!

Felix got up from the ground, his eyes warily staring at Liam. He couldn't help but feel overwhelmed since he had never expected someone to be able to defeat him after his powerful Soultrait had awoken.

For a while, he had also daydreamt of becoming one of the superhuman existences that were only known in movies, and webnovels. Liam had barely attacked him but his simple move had jolted Felix back to reality, whether he liked it or not.

"I will come with you…" He mumbled while trying to force a smile on his face. Liam nodded in response before he averted his attention to the surrounding area.

"How many people listen to you?" Liam asked when he saw the rugby goalposts of the three rugby fields. Many people were spread all over the football fields but none of them seemed capable enough to start fighting with their lives on the line. At most, the athletes and a few loners could fit his requirement.

"How many do you need?" Felix countered the question with another one.

"Enough to disassemble the rugby goalpost, carry them to the entrances in the outer layer, and block them off. I would also need a bunch of people who're willing to actually fight. Using monster corpses to block the main entrances will be quite helpful as well. Everyone needs to learn how to fight in order to survive in the Arcane Apocalypse sooner or later, either way!" Liam answered before he thought of something else as well.

"If you know where other furniture or sport equipment can be found, it would be good to use that as well to seal the entrances. As long as the doors are closed and several meters of a blockade erected, monsters would have a hard time paving their way through everything. Not even Elite Ratatuo are intelligent enough to force their way to the inner ring of the gymnasium if we put up a lot of difficult obstacles."

Once Liam finished speaking, he noticed that he was looked at weirdly. This was not actually something new for him so he didn't bother about the gazes and turned around when he heard Kian's voice from behind.

"How do you know that not even the Elite Ratatuo are intelligent enough to think about creating a pathway through the blockade you've been talking about? Did you analyze the intelligence of the rats that quickly?" Kian's voice was filled with surprise. He didn't seem suspicious of Liam but rather baffled to think how someone as intelligent as Liam could end up by their side.

It was as if their guardian angel had descended in the form of their mysterious savior, Liam. That was, at least, how Kian felt at this very moment.

However, Liam also noticed that many grew suspicious of him after hearing him. Nobody really knew him and it was not as if his mask made him look like a friendly and trustworthy person. The only reason why nobody chose to confront him was that Liam was evidently trying to help them.

One had to be blind, deaf, and stupid not to understand that Liam's words and actions were a clear indicator of what he wanted to achieve-safeguarding them, though nobody understood why he was going to such lengths to save them.

"The ordinary huge rats are merely normal rats, the Blazing Tooth Rats feel like mutations of ordinary rats while the Elite Ratatuo is more like advanced evolutions. When I fought it, I could clearly tell that it wasn't adept at using special tactics to fight, but that it relied on it's bestial instincts to fight," Liam explained nonetheless. He didn't know how long it would rain, which meant that he could hardly allow anyone to push him away even if that would make things a lot easier.

His explanation wasn't anything special but it was enough to disperse the suspicion of most people.

Felix didn't think much about it and nodded his head before he looked at the condition of Liam and the students behind him.

"You and your people should rest for a bit while I will gather everyone who is willing to have a rendezvous with some rats in the rain!"

Chapter 23: Disgusting

Liam didn't even think of taking a break but he told the others to rest for the time being.

They didn't know when the rats would infiltrate the gymnasium if they hadn't started doing that already by now.

Liam walked through the inner layer of the gymnasium to take a good look at the condition of the natives and the infrastructure of the building.

"The entrances in the inner layer are guarded but none of these people are proficient in fighting…only Felix and his fellow martial artists…" He figured quickly before leaving through one of the entrances. Securing the outer layer of the gymnasium was far more important since a bunch of rats might have already found their way to it and could be hiding in the hallway that surrounded the inner layer.

It was like a huge running track surrounded the hall in the inner layer. Monsters could be anywhere by now, which was why Liam hoped that Felix and his people wouldn't waste too much time.

"Where are we going?" A sudden voice snapped him out of his thoughts. Liam turned around to see Kian, Rex, Olivia, and a few more students wielding spears and following him.

"Weren't you guys supposed to take a break?" He responded with another question, squinting his eyes. Liam didn't even bother registering the faces of the few students who had chosen to follow him.

"You were told to take a break as well…" Olivia retorted, which caused Liam to close his mouth for a few seconds. He merely nodded his head.

"I'm just taking a look at the current situation. If the outer layer of the gymnasium is flooded by monsters their extermination will be our highest priority, rather than sealing off the entrances. Well, to be fair, we would have to fight monsters while others would have to seal the entrances," Liam knew it was pointless trying to convince the students to return and rest.

It was their decision to follow him right now and it was not as if he had anything against their help either. They would save him lots of trouble when they would encounter a bunch of monsters.

And hopefully, nothing too bad would happen to them since they were inside an enclosed space and Liam was by their side as well. Everyone was tired but it was not as if Liam could not afford to think about relaxing. His mind was flooding him with tasks he had to accomplish before he was allowed to sit down and eat or drink something, let alone take a nap!

They walked down through the outer layer of the gymnasium for quite a while without coming across an infiltration of any monster. Liam took this as a great sign, and their hopes soared high but it was only a while later that a muffled scream reached their group.

"Helpp!!!" someone screamed, the desperation in the voice clear to everyone. Liam and the others rushed through the hallway without giving it another thought as the desperate screams got clearer, yet also quieter "Someone…PLEASE!!!"

Kian rushed forward all of a sudden after triggering his Soultrait, just to stop all of a sudden when he saw something from the corner of his eyes. The door to one of the coaches' rooms hadn't been closed properly and Kian saw something that caused his expression to change drastically.

He walked back and pushed the door open and it was just a moment later when Liam and the others reached one of the coach's offices as well.

"Nobody will help you…the world is nearing its end, so stop screaming and have some fun with us!" A man's voice could be heard through the gap before the situation inside the office was unveiled to everyone.

A young woman, presumably an athlete according to the clothes she wore, was pinned down on the office table, while a chubby man in his late 40s was leaning all over her, licking her neck. The woman was struggling hard and trying to push herself away from the man, while the other men in the room were staring at her with pure lust.

"Nooo…" She tried to scream but her mouth was covered by the chubby man's hand, stifling her cries for help.

Liam could only shake his head dismissively at that.

'Why do I feel like humans are the same everywhere?... Maybe even Demons are better in that regard…no scratch that…' He thought for a moment when he saw how a few men pulled down their pants, revealing the tiny worms that had been hidden away for ages.

It was already a wonder that no cobwebs had formed around their crotches.

When the young woman screamed, Olivia was the first to react. She was about to rush forward but Liam held her back.

He grasped Olivia's wrist and smiled faintly at her face which was filled with uncontrollable anger and the urge to rescue the helpless woman.

Olivia was just about to use every bit of strength in her body to free herself of Liam's grasp when she saw the coldness in his eyes as he turned over to look at the worst kind of human being in front of him.

"You don't have to dirty your fingers with trash…I'll gladly do that!" He mumbled quietly before he began to move.

His right hand holding the battle axe flicked forward, cutting through the air as the weapon was hurled through the length of the room, just for Liam to dash behind it a quarter of a moment later.

While the guys looked over at Liam and the others in ridicule, the helpless woman, whose clothes had been torn apart couldn't help but continue crying. Fat drops of tears trickled down her cheeks as she was trying to free herself from the iron grip that pinned her down on the table.

She closed her eyes and continued to resist, just to feel something warm trickling down on her face. The iron-tight grasp around her arm loosened all of a sudden. The woman tried to free herself, only to realize that a heavy weight collapsed on top of her without any warning.

She opened her mouth and was just about to scream loudly when the desperate pleas of the men who had nearly violated her filled the young woman's ears.

"Please..noo…don't kill us, PLEA–..."

"Nooo!! Arghashd…"

"You bastard, how dare you ki–..."

"...You…"

The screams and shouts of the desperation of the same men who were going to force themselves upon her reached the young woman's ears. They lasted only for a few seconds before they died down forever. She was struggling to move under the weight of the man who had collapsed on her and finally mustered the courage to open her eyes. However, what she saw caused a cold shudder to run down her spine.

An axe was stuck in the skull of the man who had attempted to rape her first and blood was oozing out of the wound.

She let out a shocked gasp as she turned her head to the left where she saw a single man standing in the midst of corpses. Blood continued to flow down from his hands like streams.

Cold purple eyes entered her sight when the man turned into her direction.

"Let's leave, we're done here," Liam said coldly as he approached the woman who was still buried under the burly man's corpse. He retracted the battle-axe that was stuck in the skull of the man before he looked over to the young woman who was trying her best to remove the lifeless body from her.

"Pick up some clothes and go to the inner layer. Tell them that I killed the people who wanted to violate you, and you should be fine," He explained shortly without giving her any introduction.

"W-Who…Who are you?" She stammered weakly but he only shrugged and replied,

"I'm…just a masked Devil."
