He lay in the dirt, clutching a loaf of bread he had stolen—his desperate attempt to feed his starving children. His ribs felt like they were cracking under the weight of the merciless kicks. Blood smeared his lips as he pleaded through broken words, his voice a weak whisper, "Please... for my children..." But the guards showed no mercy. This was the surface—cruel, cold, and indifferent.
