Marcus Cutler POV:
I was discharged from the hospital the next evening, and I promptly made my way back to my motel room. The door was still locked when I got there, and a quick look around confirmed that everything was where I had left it. That was a welcome relief after the last night.
The fact that I was still alive should have been more of a relief, but that just meant Julia wanted something else from me.
But if that was the case, why did she tell me to leave town?
Nothing about this situation was making sense. Vampires don’t spare people without a reason, and then they don’t just let their prey walk around freely afterwards either. I needed help to figure this one out.
Pulling out my phone, I called my benefactors.
The phone rang for several minutes before the voice of my handler answered.
“What do you have to report, Marcus?” she asked me.
“I’ve identified the vampire,” I replied. “But I have been compromised.”
