Chapter 33: Chapter Thirty-Three: History

"By the way… Edith, was she fine?"

When they finished eating their dinner and the dishes had been cleaned by Kai, the two went back to their room to get the needed rest they didn't get at the capital.

Helix's room is nearer to the kitchen so it's him who arrived first but he didn't even put his hand on the doorknob and just stood there quietly for a while. And then, he asked that question.

Kai looked at Helix's side profile. He got a bit surprised when the other suddenly asked about the princess, but he understood. Kai smiled and said, "She was fine. She was startled for a moment but when she looked at you back then, she said, 'Brother Lix'."

'Wait, in his perspective, I lost my memories. Is it alright to say this?' As a high-ranking nobleman, Kai Zein obviously knew that Helix gave up the throne and how the current royal family erased his name from the names of royalties in shame.

But right now, he's supposed to be someone without memories…

He didn't even have time to think of the consequences of his own actions when suddenly, he heard Helix's deep and unusually obvious troubled sigh.

"Brother Lix, huh."

His gaze is solely focused on the doorknob for a long, long time. Kai also stayed still, unable to figure out whatever is inside Helix's head. After a long wait, Helix finally opened the door and glanced at Kai calmly.

"Go rest. Have a nice night."

And then he entered his own room and closed the room's door without even letting Kai reply back.

Kai stared at the door, which the other entered and then he also sighed. 'Have a nice night? Very out of character but…'

There was a faint smile on his lips as Kai went back to his own room.

-

When Kai woke up, it was already halfway through the afternoon.

He ran all around the castle, from the bathroom to wash up, to his room to dress up, to the kitchen to eat the two meals he missed, to his newly made garden and to the library to gather information regarding demon beasts.

Of course, he also passed by Helix's room multiple times amidst his hurrying about. But Helix's room was totally quiet.

Even though in the kitchen were a bunch of warm meals he missed after sleeping through breakfast to lunch, Kai didn't see Helix at all. But he didn't doubt the other either.

The room was leaking with magic, he just knew that the mage was inside, recovering and managing the mana that ran havoc inside his body during their stay in the capital. Obviously, Kai refrained from bothering Helix. As long as he's fine, that's all that matters.

So, Kai also did his best.

Multitasking learning both curses and demon beasts.

Kai promised himself to get rid of Helix's self-inflicted curse-poison which burdens Helix both emotionally and physically. But he also has to study demon beasts so that he'll at least know how to act around the demon beast he'll be temporarily fostering in the castle in the near future.

His shallow knowledge from the novel won't really help after all. Kai needed to work hard.

Honestly, curses fall under the category of dark magic. So there's not a lot of information since throughout history, those who crossed the boundary of morality in magic and casted dark magics could be counted with a few hands. In this era as well, only Helix could cast dark magic on the continent.

About demon beasts however, there are plenty of books that hold information regarding these creatures.

In this world, both demon beasts and magic beasts came from one superior ancestor.

The primordial demons.

The superior race which had ruled this world, also the creations of the gods. For millennia, these primordial demons roamed all over this world, dominating over every other creature to live through fear, power and respect.

Those demons owned magic. They were the only race to use magic, and thus, their mana storage and magic output were greater than even the mages of this era. Perhaps, even stronger than Seth himself.

However, some time a few thousand years ago, the number of primordial demons started to dwindle. The chaos they would always ensue towards other races started to stop happening.

Then one day, the last of those primordial demons disappeared.

What's left however were two sub-races of those primordial demons. The smaller population, but stronger demon beasts and the larger population but weaker magic beasts.

Demon beasts regained all the bad traits of the primordial beings. Their viciousness, their overwhelming power, the pride and dominance, the violent tendencies and also the ability to have their own bloodline magic. They also have the ability to think, due to their inherited high-level intelligence.

Magic beasts however, resemble ordinary animals rather than the primordial demons. Both their appearance and food chains are similar to animals. However, that doesn't mean that they're significantly weaker. Depending on the innate power of the magic beasts, they can cast magic from the 1st classification up to the 5th magic at least.

But they're still inferior compared to the demon beasts after all…

Kai placed a thin paper bookmark in between the pages and closed the book. He placed the heavy book down on the table and yawned lightly afterwards.

"I still want to sleep more…" he sighed.

He went silent suddenly, just simply staring at the blank air for a long time.

'I really need Helix's help after all…'

'This is not something I can accomplish just by myself.'

'But Helix's still recovering…'

'I want to locate the demon beast at least.'

'Seth said that it's harmless though…'

Kai groaned, planting his face on the table as he heaved a deep sigh which told his troubles. What he needs to do, and also what he wants to do, Kai really doesn't know. Everything's so jumbled up.

'... Should I ask Helix?'

But that just means relying on him again. Ever since Kai came to this world, he has been on the receiving end of Helix's help and considerations. Yet Kai really hasn't done anything to repay Helix… and he just keeps thinking of depending on the powerful mage…

Kai really has a lot of questions.

Like, why is Helix doing everything he can for Kai?

What is the untold story in between this duke and the dark mage of the opposing forces?

And what exactly is their relationship before Kai transmigrated into this body, replacing the original Kai?

He knows that the answers to those three questions are probably just the same. But Kai felt awkward asking Helix about it.

'Pretending to have a memory loss is really too much.'

Now thinking about all this, Kai felt sleepy yet again. With his face against the table, Kai fell unknowingly asleep.
