Chapter 5: Prologue (5)

Like a man on a special mission, Lungelo pressed the four-wheeler's accelerator and turned the steering wheel to all angles.

He was going so fast that he missed a bend and was near to finishing his race in a gutter.

Unbelievably, the newborn continued sleeping as peacefully as when he was in his mother's womb. He even flashed a bright smile at his father to tell he was enjoying the moment.

Lungelo looked at the car's dashboard and exclaimed. The fuel pressure was critically low and therefore they would have to pull over the vehicle to avoid causing damage to the engine and complete the last remaining kilometer on foot.

Mr. Paddy heard the bad news and had a temper tantrum. He was so pissed off but had to calm down, the clock was ticking against him.

The sky was slowly darkening. The rays of the sun were progressively disappearing behind the curtain of clouds.

Mr. Paddy glanced at his heir and a hot and big tear came out of his right eye and rolled down his jaw.

He then kissed the toddler on his forehead and murmured unintelligible words to his ears before extending his hands toward Lungelo, the retired Olympian, and ordering the latter to run till his last breath to Ngwempisi river and baptize the newborn with its holy water before the sunset.

The forty-year-old Swazi worker didn't need the British landlord to talk twice to understand the gravity of the situation.

He took the infant from his Master's hands, faced the direction of the south, and began a race against time, leaving behind the desperate baron.

As the last glow of the sun was about to bow before the evening, Lungelo reached the coast of Ngwempisi river.

He kneeled on the side and with the palm of his right hand, collected some water. He then poured the holy liquid on the baby's skull while pronouncing a few evangile words. And the sun set.

Lungelo's mission was accomplished. The night was now at its fullest. The area was poorly lit. The street lamps were functioning in some places, and in other zones, only the light of the moon helped see.

Lungelo spotted a few meters from the shore, a log cabin and decided to go there and shelter himself and the infant.

He opened the door and it was dark. He looked in the obscurity for a lamp but didn't find one. He persisted in searching and finally laid his hand on a luminant.

He switched it on and it spread a powerful light in the wooden house. There was a bed and a duvet cover. Lungelo put the sleeping infant onto the mattress and soothed him with the blanket.

The newborn had not been fed yet but he looked like he was under divine protection. Lungelo saw that the kid seemed all right, so he left the infant in the hands of Morpheus.

He went to the small parlor nearby and it was dusty. He sought a tissue, found one, and tidied up the furniture.

Done, he sat on the old sofa and laid his feet on the table. Tired, he was drowsy. And when he could no longer resist the call of the god of rest, he fell asleep.

A moment later, Lungelo was sunbathing on the coast of Ngwempisi river with two beautiful angels of pleasure.

Then someone knocked at the door of the log cabin and the casanova woke up from his dream.
