28: Disaster

I lay on my bed staring up at the plaster ceiling. Jenna sits on the floor beside me, both of us not speaking.

In my mind, I’m reeling in total and complete agony. How could I let this happen? I told myself I would NEVER fulfill the Bonding with Logan so he wouldn’t get hurt. And now just that very thing has happened, and it’s all my fault. I should never have let him leave that morning.

Jenna murmurs in the still air, not looking at me, “It wasn’t your fault. Stop thinking that.”

“What? You can read minds now?” I say, my voice monotone.

“No, but spirits can, or some of them, at least. I’m a medium. It’s my gift, remember?”

I let out a long sigh, not responding.

She turns around and looks at me. “So, are you gonna just sit there and pout or do something?”

“Mom said to wait. Let THEM figure out what to do.”

“And you’re just going to trust them?”
