Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Fault

*Garan and Maeve*

Garan’s leg ached, but he had so far been able to hike of his own volition. Maeve watched him carefully, and he knew that when she asked for frequent breaks, it was more for his benefit than hers. He resented it and plowed on as quickly as he could. Cold tendrils of fear grew within him, and he knew Maeve felt them, as well.

A near full day of trekking north had left them with no more clues about Brynn’s fate than they had started with. There had been no sign of her either alive or dead; no signs of wolves, no signs of any life whatsoever. They both tried not to say what they were thinking - that their plan was really no plan at all, that this was beginning to feel more like a fool’s errand than a rescue mission, and that they were likely too late already.
