Chapter 6: Chapter 6 [Elementary Days (pt.3)]

It's been 3 weeks since the first love letter. Emiko and Kazuo managed to keep the letter exchange a secret, surprising if you consider the hawk-eyed "angels." Through those letters, they learned many things about each other! Including family life, how crappy school can be, when their friends get on crack, really interesting! Of course, secrets don't last forever, they always end up not-so-secretive. And obviously, it was going to be this day.

"HUH?!? SHIMIZU-SAN?!? WHY ARE YOU WITH THAT CREATURE?!?"

"Enatsu-san? I thought you were still fighting with Chibana-san? It was about, um, the best ice cream flavor?"

"That would get us in trouble, Shimizu-san. And shut up Ego-queen, your voice is ripping my ears apart. Just so you know, chocolate is still the best."

"ME? Shut up? NEVERRRRRRRR-wait, no you DIDN'T!"

"Didn't what?"

"...mango ice cream is superior."

"For the 789th time, Chocolate. Is. The. Best."

"Choco choco choco, very classic indeed. Perfect for your granny-like personality Chibi."

"Enatsu...I shall ignore that comment for your dear, poor soul. Oh wait, you don't have one."

"MANGO IS THE SUPREME FLAVOR! AND I DO HAVE A SOUL, UNLIKE YOUR BLAND EYES! YOU CHIBI!"

"Please be quiet, Enatsu-san. And stop provoking your friend, Chibana-san."

"Of course, my goddess."

Kazuo was shocked by the sudden change of tension. He also seems to have lost a brain cell.

"Anyways, what are you doing outside, Shimizu-san? Especially with a...pest."

The "pest" gave a very offended look.

"Well..."

And so, the two pen pals explained the story to the "angelic" duo. After the long explanation, Chibana spoke first.

"I see, so in summary, after...the grandpa-haired boy wrote a letter to our goddess, Shimizu-san rejected his confession but agreed to be...friends. Am I correct?"

"Yep, pretty much."

"BUT SHIMIZU-SAN! ISN'T IS FINE WITH JUST ME AND CHIBI?"

"Um..."

'What should I do? I can't just say that I wanted to see Kazuo's little brother who doesn't even exist yet...ughhhhhhhhh! But then, if I say I wanted more friends, then the two will most likely distance themselves from me and I don't want to feel guilty! HELP ME! SOMEBODY!'

"Oh! Uh, I'm not Shimizu-san's friend yet. I am currently testing!"

"Huh? Testing?"

Emiko was just as confused as her girl friends.

"Well, Shimizu-san is our school's goddess, so not just ANYONE can talk to her!"

The ice-cream fighters nod with a constipated look.

"But I was granted an invitation to test out my worth! To see if I'm WORTHY to be her friend!"

"OOOOH! THAT MAKES SENSE! THEN SHIMIZU-SAN, PLEASE ALLOW ME TO TAKE THAT TEST TOO! I ALSO WANT TO BE YOUR FRIEND!"

"If you'll allow me, please include me during this journey, Shimizu-san."

But before the three could bow to Emiko, she screamed,

"NO! YOU HAVE IT ALL WRONG!"

"Eh?"

"I would NEVER do that, only stuck up people would do such thing!"

(A/N: Emiko, you're a hypocrite.)

"Friends...don't test each other. We just do it if we feel like it...did you all really not think of me as a friend?"

Emiko thought this would give a really depressed and awkward scenario. Until Enatsu replied,

"I mean, isn't that obvious?"

"Huh?"

"I hate to admit this but...I'll have to agree with Enatsu on this one."

"Same here."

"Wait, really? You three...didn't think of me as a friend?"

"Well, Shimizu-san does seem unreachable."

"Yeah, like, a real goddess? Supernatural? You know, far ahead of us?"

"Kind of like talking with a really old lady. Around her 70s."

'Okay, I get it, my mind is not like a child. But Kazuo, SERIOUSLY? 70s?!? I GOT HERE SINCE 45 SO I'LL BE LIKE 50! NOT *********** 70!!! And did you even look at your HAIR?!?'

But unlike her chaotic mindset, our protagonist calmly responded,

"Is that so, I didn't realize that. Why didn't you tell me before?"

The three 1st graders looked at each other. Then, they simultaneously declared,

"Because you never asked."

Emiko wanted to rip her own hair out right then and there. But still with her pride intact (and not wanting to traumatize children), she kept the same, calm tone.

"I see. Well, how about the four of us officially become friends then?"

"REALLY?!? DO YOU TRULY MEAN THAT, SHIMIZU-SAN?"

"Of course!"

Right after, silence filled the room.

"So...now that we're friends...what should we do?"

"Hmmm, oh! How about we get rid of the formalities?"

"That's a great idea, uh, Chibi-san?"

Chibana irked when Enatsu just laughed until tears formed in her eyes.

"It's Chibana. Not chibi, you grandpa-hair."

Kazuo was shocked of the sudden insult.

"I apologize for the confusion, Chibana-san. And I'm not 'grandpa-hair,' my name is-"

"Probably not important!"

Kazuo's face reddened from the sudden shout.

"I'm certain that interruption surely wasn't important, Enatsu-san!"

"Oh no, it very much was needed. Unlike your existence."

The "unimportant" being tried to calm down, which was failing tremendously because of the surrounding giggles.

"Puh-lease, that mouth of yours is far worthless than a single strand of my hair."

"Whatever you say, grandpa."

Kazuo was defeated once again, even after he finally thought of a comeback. Then Chibana exclaimed,

"Hey, respect your elders Enatsu!"

"Yes yes, I am 'sincerely' sorry for honestly 'complimenting' your hair. Grandpa."

Though Emiko wanted to continue observing, she saw the "victimized" Kazuo about to blow up.

"Alright, that's enough. So, we're getting rid of the formalities, right? That's fine with me, but I thought we should refer to each other with our given names. Any objections?"

Despite the bold claim, nobody opposed.

"Great, then who wants to start?"

"...I'll go first. As long as SOMEONE promises NOT to interfere."

Enatsu just rolled her eyes.

"Sure, go ahead."

"Okay. Well, it's a pleasure to meet SOME of you. My name is Kazuo Sugawara, and I'm currently 6 years old."

"...that's it?"

"What else do you expect of me?"

"Did you dye your hair?"

"No, it's natural. Got strange genetics in my family."

"Hm, really strange for sure. I'll go next. My name is Sachie Chibana. I'm also 6, just like the rest of you all. I love chocolate ice cream, which is the best ice cream flavor."

"NO IT'S NOT!"

"Let's not fight. We're just talking right now. Do you want to go next, Enatsu-san?"

"Sure...Mayumi Enatsu...mango-flavored ice cream is the best."

Before Sachie (Chibana) could retort, Emiko hurried.

"My turn now, right? In case for those who didn't know, I'm-"

"Emiko Shimizu."

"Um, okay! Guess there's no more to say. Just call me Emiko from now on."

And so, these four kids have officially become friends. Who'd knew that time could quickly pass?

(A/N: What is your favorite ice cream? Is it chocolate like Sachie or Mango like Mayumi? If you don't have one, name your favorite dessert!)
