Chapter 27: Making A Name (II)
Instead of using the entrance, I easily jumped over the wall as I didn't want to waste any more time. People were screaming up there and while I didn't care much about them, I refused to let someone hurt them at my expense. I entered the building and started to lunge through the stairs and before long, I found myself reaching the 6th floor.
That was when I started to hear voices from ahead. I decided to stop and listen a bit to get some context…
"Where the fuck is he?" A man asked with a snarl and a woman sobbed before I heard a loud slap. "Answer me bitch or I am going to start tossing people from here" The man threatened.
"I don't know. I swear I don't know" The woman sobbed.
"Looks like you aren't going to play nice. Toss the kid" The man ordered and the woman started sobbing even harder. Who the fuck are these people and how did they find me? Is it the Meta Liberation Army? Did they find me already? Or is it someone else, looking to score some yen by handing me over to the cops?
If it was really the MLA then I couldn't see them sparing these people. They might be Quirkless, but they were still people and from what I have learned about this city, nobody was going to care if a few homeless people were killed. It would be easy for me to simply walk away and leave these people to their fate since I owed them nothing.
The question was, should I really do that? Even now, I can't feel a shred of sympathy for these people… They were going to be killed because of me, but I still couldn't feel even a shred of guilt. Am I really a sociopath?
Now the question was, do I want to leave these people to die? After thinking for a bit, I realized that the answer was a big fat no. I may not care about these people, but just like I said, I didn't want them to die because of me. I didn't want to have their deaths on my conscience. Whatever humanity I had left, I didn't want to lose it too.
"There is no need to kill anyone. I am here" I called out as I climbed the stairs only to come across a burly man. The man stared down at me, but someone else called out from the inside.
"Let him come" The original speaker called out and the burly man stepped out of my way with a grunt. I immediately found the man who spoke. He was holding down a sobbing woman, who was trying to reach out toward the kid another man was holding over the edge. "You are a brave one, aren't you?" The man asked with an amused tone in his voice.
I looked around the room and realized that there were five of them… The homeless people were a wreck and I realized that these people had beaten them before I arrived, however, one of the homeless men was standing at the corner, looking giddy and nervous at the same time… I see… So, it must have been who called these people here for whatever reason.
"I am here. There is no need to kill anyone" I said and the leader simply raised an eyebrow before giving the woman he was holding down an amused look.
"A Hero. We have a Hero!" The leader jeered and the rest of his goons laughed and the snitch also started to laugh nervously. "Are you willing to come with us?" The leader finally asked after a moment.
"Yes" I nodded. It might look like I was sacrificing myself, but that wasn't it… I was simply trying to diminish the collateral damage.
"Alright. You heard the kid. Let everyone go" The leader ordered and released the woman while his goon released the kid. The woman ran towards the kid without looking anywhere else and pulled him into her arms while sobbing. "Well, we have what we came for" The leader approached me with a grin on his face.
"Start walking" The goon near the stairs ordered and started to follow without any complaints.
"We heard you have a bag filled with money?" The leader asked, but all of us knew it wasn't much of a question and I glanced toward the snitch. I wanted to kill him right now, but I held myself back.
"I hid it near that alley" I said while pointing at an alley with the least amount of lights. The leader placed his hand over my shoulder and pressed hard.
"For your sake, I hope you are not lying" The leader gave me a savage grin, but I decided to ignore him for the time being.
"What about my share?" The snitch asked nervously, but there was a hint of excitement in his voice.
"Ah… Right, your share" The leader sighed and one of his goons pushed him off the stairs. No! No! You fuckers! He was mine to kill you motherfuckers! I screamed inside my mind as I watched the snitch flail around helplessly in the air before hitting his head on a steel beam. His head popped like a watermelon. "Whoo! Did you see that kid?" The man asked me excitedly.
Yes, you fucker, I saw that and I am going to pop your head in the same way… You shouldn't have stolen my kill. We finally arrived at the ground floor and the leader ordered one of his goons to bring the car. Within a minute, a car arrived, it was a Toyota. "Get in" The leader ordered as he held the door open for me.
I climbed in the air and the leader sat down beside me with another one of his goons flanking me from the other side. The leader ordered the driver to take us to the alley where I pointed previously and meanwhile, I started to wonder if Ito had used this chance to escape…
It didn't take us long for us to arrive at the said alley. "Where is the bag, kid?" The leader asked threateningly as we climbed out of the car and I stared at him for a moment.
"So, who do you work for?" I asked, ignoring his question and his glare intensified on me.
"None of your damn business, kid. Do what you are told or I will have to-" The leader paused and pulled out a gun from his back before pointing it at me "-shoot you" He finished before he cocked the gun. I simply stared at the gun and a smile bloomed on my face. I always wanted to test my scales against a gun since I learned my scales were bulletproof.
However, all of a sudden he pulled the trigger, but there was no bang. I slowly looked down at my shoulder and found a dart sticking out of my skin… I started to feel sleepy, but it was only for a moment. "You shouldn't have done that" I growled as scales started to appear all over my body…
