Chapter 8: Life is No Fair

I settled in the Namsan base, but i wasn't a normal resident there. I am a virus user and a criminal. I did some tests before joining my criminal crew. The tests didn't show any potential use of the virus so they deducted that i am in the regeneration category.

Categories were something new to me, it is a unique thing to this base. More or less it's a way to differentiate between different types of contaminations.

-Regeneration: related to powers that can only benefit the virus user.

-Attack: only powers that can be used for attack, destruction, and no other thing.

-Defense: powers that can be used to survive as a group.

-Support: the most important and rarest, this category is for powers that can heal or power up others. The virus user is not useful on his own, but so useful to others.

Everything here is new to me. And according to Hansong, criminals don't get tents or beds... Ah, the night sky is beautiful, it has been a while since i saw stars sparkling.

I am now a builder in the east group... And to be honest, the guys i work with are a bit creepy, i can't get used to them. But in other departments i am satisfied, they use some virus type of agriculture, or that i heard. Nevertheless am happy with 3 meals a day since i can't fully figure out how to use the ring...

Builder is a decent job here it seems, with the population growth of the base. The leaders decided to upgrade the base, and that's how my job came to life.

The base was somewhat uniform, all the administration tents and buildings were in the center of it, surrounded by a bunch of wire and sand walls. That was how it started.

In about 200m of the administration, the resident's tents are distributed in a grid fashion for about 70m, it is such a big area and a lot of people. In the northern corner of the base, there were us, the criminals sleeping on the ground. I am used to it by now, but my mates try to flee so often from there and sleep in the tents. And that plan always gets denied by security. I am still struggling to process the sheer amount of precision in this base's infrastructure.

The southern side of the wall has more space than the resident's area, and it's reserved for agriculture and storage. Usually, it's heavily guarded especially during nighttime.

Routine can kill both elephants and ants, but i am a different story. For a man who worked 15 years in human resources logistics company... Routine resistance is a must-have for those jobs.

In the morning we wake up at about 6 am, and resemble facing the wall, 3 guards with rifles and two virus users from the administration count and keep track of presence. After all the other residents had breakfast and got to their positions, the guards and the virus users escort us to eat in groups. Meanwhile, every group that finished eating gets taken by a truck to his post outside the base's wall to work. The eastern group i am in had a very bad spot, which was full of debris, and a half-destructed building that had to be removed for the outer wall to be constructed.

The outer wall has to be at least 4m from the ground, for the new area to be used. But we are a consumable manpower, criminals lif's it didn't matter, die or live is not something the administration will care about. That said there were some criteria designed to minimize that, first only male criminals younger than 45 years are allowed in the outer wall-building project, second every group of 7 people had a virus user and 2 guards to ensure their safety. And each trying to flee is met with a huge percentile of death.

Today is my 5th day here, and i become an official builder, i nailed my spot on the east group. I am happy... That means i won't leave the east group until the wall is fully constructed. And i am a part of this base, having to work in a danger is nothing of a problem for me. Zombies aren't that harmful.

It's been a month since i become an official in the group and the wall construction is barely starting. We had a lot of wreckage to move and the plans weren't that clear. Today the engineer arrived here heavily guarded, and we discussed the plans for the construction. I was quite good at my job i feel like, i was still an introvert by my world's definition, but who wants a bunch of real murderers as his friends?

The project has come far, and the administration promised us tents and beds if the project came to an end before spring. We would have loved tents on the rainy days that passed... But yeah the worst has passed and from now on i am even more motivated to finish our part of the wall.

"Ah, hyong-nim, can you mix more cement, please? We need about one meter to poor on this side." Daehyoon.

"Okay coming right away. KYONG!! Stop playing and come help me" my 43 years old criminal mate Kang.

"Hihi, you are the one responsible for mixing cement old man..." Also my 23 years old self-confidence to the moon criminal friend, Kyong.

"I WILL CUT YOUR STOMACH OPEN WHEN YOU ARE SLEEPING.." Kang.

"Okey Dokey calm down let's not do that, I was just kidding." Kyong.

Lovely day, sunny and warm. I was pouring cement on the part of the wall that was covered in wooden planks, just then, a horde of zombies chasing 2 cars and a long truck appeared from behind the hills of destruction.

"GUYS, RUN AWAY!! ZOMBIES!!!!" Daehyoon

I jump from the scaffolding when i saw a green haired women shooting at the zombies from the window of the car in front. Uh, i think they were looking for it right? I rushed to the truck that is supposed to take us inside the inner wall...

"Hey guard, GUARD! 3 cars are chased by lots of zombies.. AHH... OUF... AHH... I think it's the leader... OUF... Green hair AHH... Woman.." Daehyoon.

The guard looked at me in confusion.

"GET IN THE TRUCK YOU SCUM!!" Kang.

"Yeah okay.. OUF" Daehyoon.

"And you! what are you looking at? get in the truck or go help the leader. You have a weapon, you will be a waste if you stood like that" Kang.

Ah, this Kang is so reliable in this kind of situation.

We got attacked by zombies several times, but never this many. And usually, the virus users take care of those situations, the guards with the guns are just a safety measure used to constrain us.

The truck began moving, and fast. As usual, we entered the base and waited in the park beside the entrance for the zombie to be taken care of, and come back to our building.

"It's been 20 min, what's happening out there?" Kyong.

"You always liked hanging around not doing anything, what happened to you being so bored in breaks?" Kang.

"It's just boring to sit on the truck not doing anything. An old lad like you won't understand" Kyong.

"SHUT UP OR I WILL EXPLODE THAT HEAD OF YOURS ON THE CHAIR YOU SITTING ON" Kang.

"Ha haha haha, you won't bleed a lot i assure you Kyong." Daehyoon.

I know i said i won't make criminals friends, but i always end up beside this two... Is this what friendship means?
