Chapter 28: Hints and Missed (2)

Arren really thought he guessed right because the alpha didn't say anything, and his smile broadened even more. Seeing how happy he was, Spade decided to leave it alone and change the subject. In any case, he'd soon reveal his true identity to the omega.

"I already prepared your breakfast, you need to eat then take medicine even though the fever had gone down," that was also why Spade went into the bedroom, if Arren didn't wake up yet, he would wake him up because he needed to eat and take his medicine. In addition, the doctor advised the omega to rest.

"Oh, breakfast..." Arren was up for it because he was hungry, "Before that, could I change my clothes first?" Arren really felt like he needed to take a shower, he wasn't dirty or anything, but it was still uncomfortable.

However, because he still had a slight fever and cold, he couldn't, but changing his clothes was fine. He was still wearing his black shirt and pants from yesterday when he wanted to look like a delivery man.

Spade didn't have to think about it and simply nodded. He also believes that the omega needed to change his clothes because he was soaked in the rain the day before. Actually, it was his negligence that he didn't change the omega's clothes.

No one could blame him though; while Spade wasn't that innocent in that area, he still didn't have any intention to undress the omega without his permission. As for contacting someone, he really didn't think about it at all.

He had a lot on his mind last night, on top of being concerned about the omega. Fortunately, the fever did not worsen and subsided sooner after he took the medication.

Even with all of that, Spade didn't sleep a wink last night. He was worried that the omega would have another nightmare, but he soon relaxed when Arren fell asleep peacefully. Spade only remembered the clothes this morning.

"Of course, you can. I already prepared your clothes. You just choose whatever suits you." Spade calmly stated. His deep voice was especially attractive. Arren, who had only recently recovered, couldn't help but be willful and flirty again.

Arren smiled sweetly as he combed the quilt with his hands. His phoenix eyes had a bright glow when he gazes at the alpha. "Thank you... Mister Investigator, you really help me a lot. Ah, how presumptuous of me to even let you prepare my own clothes," the thought-provoking tone traveled through the ears of the alpha, "Hopefully, I would pay back this favor," Arren lowered his head and the tone sank low as his voice was sweet and mellow.

Anyone who could hear him would be deeply sorry. Hah, the alpha might have no idea that he was an expert on being a white lotus sometimes.

Arren had no idea, but Spade was well aware of his personality by this point. He was playful and mischievous, among other things. So, his act had been seen through from the start. Spade couldn't help but shake his head silently. The omega was perfectly fine now that he was in the mood to flirt.

So, knowing what would happen if he went along with Arren, Spade decided to end it first. "It's fine, and as for the favor..." Spade paused, a smirk forming on his lips and his eyes flashing with light. "...it will be paid sooner than you think," Spade said as he turned to ring Arren's clothes.

A chill ran down Arren's spine as a foreboding feeling enveloped him. He immediately raised his head to look at the alpha, but all he saw was his back. He couldn't help but wonder... What exactly did the alpha mean?

There was no use thinking about it. As per Arren's personality, he would first take care of the matter at hand before thinking about the next one. He was, after all, the personification of focusing on the present rather than the future.

Once Spade put the new clothes in the bedroom, Arren looked for what he thought was okay. He washed for about ten minutes and then changed his clothes. And after he was done, he went out of the bathroom.

Once he was out, Arren didn't see Spade inside. Perhaps he was preparing the meal. Now that he felt comfortable, he decided to explore the room. He meant to exit the bedroom and enter the living room.

It was quite stuffy inside, and he assumed they would eat at the dining table rather than on the bed. Arren, as much as he desired a breakfast-in-bed romantic scene, would put it aside and try it when they were actually a couple. That time would be more exciting and memorable than today.

With a humming tone, Arren walked out of the bedroom and slowly opened the door. He only peered in at first, then slipped out when he didn't see anyone. He surveyed the entire area. He was stunned yet again. Arren was just standing there at the front door, not closing it yet. He just stood there and looked around.

Arren wasn't being dramatic; he was truly surprised. It wasn't entirely about the design or interior of the hotel room but of the size... Because of the scale, Arren could only think of one thing. The Presidential Suite. The term itself wasn't surprising enough to stun him, but when combined with a behemoth like the Emperor's Point Hotel. Then that was another story.

Arren had just been wondering about Mister Investigator's background and thought he had figured out the whole story. But... if he had the capability to book this kind of important suite on short notice, Arren wasn't sure anymore. Was it truly possible for a powerful, higher-ranking official to do it?

He assumed it was a Deluxe Suite or even a standard room, but it was a Presidential Suite. Arren knew the room would only be reserved for royalties from other kingdoms or presidents of republics. His alpha... perhaps, wasn't some kind of royal blood... right?

Was Mister Investigator a member of the royal family? Arren fell silent, realizing that it wasn't so impossible after all. The alpha's temperament possessed a noble air that even some nobles lacked. Perhaps the alpha was a distant relative of the Emperor as well?

He looked through his memories of the novel. To be honest, after swearing not to interfere with the plot, he never sorted his knowledge at all. He suddenly regretted that he might have forgotten even more than he already had.

He remembered the current main royal family, which was directly related to the current Emperor, Spade Remmington. The Mother Empress Liviera, Spade's omega dad. Princess Noreen, his aunt and also the mother of the male lead— Levin Ford.

Counting them all, the main line only had three members, and those with royal blood would still be few, such as Levin.

Most importantly, Arren only knew that among the imperial family, Spade and the Mother Empress were the only ones who played roles in the novel, particularly Spade, who played a pivotal role. From a plot standpoint, the royal family was never the main focus of the story. It was about the Amos Family, of which the omega protagonist Rave Amos was a member.

Arren subconsciously exhaled a sigh of relief. He couldn't recall any notable royal investigators. They were merely extras on the side for Spade to use on the surface. He was still safe. For a brief moment, Arren believed he had met an important character and even flirted with him. As for having royal blood, it was alright as long as it wasn't part of the main storyline.

Arren had duped himself yet again. He still didn't dare to suspect Spade's identity because meeting the Emperor while disguised as an investigator seemed unlikely. He even forgot that when they met at their mansion, he was the one who concluded Spade's identity as someone else. Spade, on the other hand, played along in the end.

Arren was zoning out in front of the bedroom door when Spade saw him. Spade's brows twitched and his mouth pursed as he was bewildered by the omega's behavior since it was the second time he'd seen him zoning out. He shook his head and ignored it as he walked to the daze omega.

Arren was startled when Spade approached him. Arren exhaled a sigh of relief as he looked at the newcomer. He pursed his lips again and complained, this time in a coquettish tone, "Can you not pop out whenever you want to?" Arren raised his brow at the alpha and stared at Spade with his piercing gaze, but it lacked a sharp threatening edge.

The alpha shook his head and his eyes seemed to mock him. Seriously? He was about to say something else when the alpha interrupted him by flicking him on the forehead

He couldn't help but close his eyes as he touched his forehead. It wasn't particularly painful, but still... He raises his head after opening his eyes to see Spade looking at him with a playful curve on his lips.

"Whose fault was that? You keep spacing out." He shook his head again and resumed his calm demeanor, "Let's go, I already prepared your breakfast." The alpha didn't wait for Arren's response. Arren watched the alpha turn around and walked at his own pace.

Arren wiped his brow with his hand and pouted. This alpha wasn't a gentleman at all! He was gentle sometimes, and there were also times that he was like this, so hateful. He rolled his eyes and walked dejectedly behind the alpha.

Chapter 29: Behind The Past

His mood did not last long as they walked through the dining room. There was a separate kitchen and dining area in the room. The table with six seats was the first thing Arren saw when he walked in. He noticed that the dishes were mostly light soup dishes.

Arren didn't need to ask because Spade already told him why the dishes were like that.

"You still have a fever," the alpha didn't elaborate much but Arren still understood. He wasn't a picky eater, and it didn't bother him too much.

Arren didn't eat much because his throat was still sore and he didn't have much of an appetite. He assumed he could eat a lot, but the food was bland. Arren forced himself to eat under the alpha's gaze. They didn't talk while eating for two reasons: one was due to the noble's dining etiquette, and the other was that Arren didn't have time to talk, so he focused on eating the tasteless food.

With a final sip, Arren put down the spoon, indicating that he was finished. He was serious this time, refusing to eat anymore even if Spade forced him to.

"I'm done," Arren declared.

He was overthinking things because the alpha said nothing about food. Spade also knew Arren didn't have an appetite, so as long as he ate something, even if it was just a mouthful, it was fine. Spade had planned to deliver the food to the omega in the bed, but when he noticed Arren spacing outside the bedroom, he realized the omega was already on his way to the kitchen.

"You have to take your medicine," Arren only heard the alpha say.

Arren nodded, and the alpha continued, "You can just rest in the room."

"What about you?" Arren asked the alpha.

"I've got something to do," he replied.

Arren didn't ask many questions about Spade's business, but instead confirmed something, "When can I see... Ashton?"

The alpha locked his gaze on Arren, who noticed Spade's eyes seemed to be searching for something in his expression. It was only for a brief moment before the alpha nodded.

"After you've recovered, I'll take you to where he is... so just rest," the alpha said softly. It was harder for Arren to ask questions anymore, and he just nodded.

The atmosphere was quiet yet comfortable. Arren didn't know, but he felt safe with the alpha, security that only a lover could provide. Perhaps... Arren really had fallen harder for the alpha.

After they ate and Arren took his medicine, he became drowsy again, and Spade convinced him to go to sleep, which he did.

Spade still has an appointment that day. He looked at Arren for a few moments before deciding to leave. He also told the bodyguards to make sure the room's perimeter was secure, and he called someone to tell them to do whatever Arren asked. He only left when he was absolutely certain he hadn't forgotten anything.

He returned to the palace in silence. The weather was fine that day. Spade had set aside his entire day to meet with Duke Katz. But, just to be sure, he checked with his secretary.

"Anything for me today?" he inquired casually. He sat in his chair in the study. Spade crossed his legs and leaned back in his seat.

"As per your order, Your Majesty, there was nothing important," the other replied.

Spade observed the other person place the teacup on the table and stand straight in front of him. The man was about the same age as Spade. His black hair was formal and his face shaved, and the man's fair appearance was especially appealing to the eyes. Contrary to his gender type, the man appeared gentle and warm, and if his physique were not that of an alpha, anyone could mistake him for an omega. Even his pheromones were gentle.

He was Spade's royal secretary, Serrien Garcia. He was also one of his few friends. Although due to their position, formality was important, Spade often talked to him about anything and even asked for advice. Serrien is one of Spade's most trusted subordinates. Of course, Serrien knew that Spade left yesterday.

Spade nodded but remained silent for a few seconds. He only closes his eyes in the seat; Spade was sleepy from not sleeping the night before, but he still had an important meeting. As a ruler, he was used to pulling all-nighters and could afford to go two days without sleeping. He just wanted to rest his eyes.

"Duke Katz?" While Spade didn't ask directly, Serrien, as Spade's secretary, was well aware of what he was talking about. Spade's eye was still closed as they talked.

"He already called just earlier and would be here soon." Serrien's answers were direct and concise. After all, he'd been serving the Emperor for years and knew what Spade wanted to hear and what he didn't.

Spade only responded with a nod. Then there was silence. One might have assumed he had already fallen asleep, but he ordered something a few seconds later.

"Just have the Duke come here in the study when he arrives... and forbid anyone from coming to see me except him."

"As you stated, Your Majesty."

Spade heard some footsteps before it fell silent again. Although his eyes were closed, his mind was not. It was still active, making it impossible for him to sleep. His thoughts didn't wander too far when, after a few minutes, the door to his study opened, accompanied by a respectful salute.

Spade gradually opened his eyes. The Duke noticed this and bowed once more. Spade nodded and motioned for the Duke to take a seat.

The room fell into silence first. Because Spade did not initiate their conversation right away, and the Duke also remained silent, it was deemed inappropriate to speak before the monarch.

Spade, of course, was aware of this, so he straightened up and began their conversation. There was no formality needed for them. However, Spade was aware that, aside from what they would discuss, the Duke was also concerned about something else.

"Arren's fever has already subsided, and he was resting when I left him," Spade reported to the Duke. Sure enough, upon hearing Spade, Duke Katz's eyes brightened up and he bowed lightly.

"Thank you, Your Majesty, for taking care of Arren," Duke Katz gratefully said to Spade. His heart was sincere, as he really worried for his son all night. Now that he knew that Arren had already somewhat recovered, he felt like his heart had finally eased.

"That's what I needed to do. Duke didn't need to thank me for it." The two started lightly, but they both knew they were just loosening up to each other.

Spade's tone was gentle at first, but it gradually became low when he said, "Duke, about what I said last night... mind if you tell me something about it?" He looked at the Duke who was sitting in front of him.

The Duke's expression became complicated, but as he resolved to tell the Emperor everything he knew, his expression eased and became determined.

The Duke bravely met the eyes of Spade and nodded, "Of course, Your Majesty. Your subject was ready for any of your questions."

"The Duchess... what really happened to her?" Spade was hesitant to ask anything about the Duke's late wife due to his feelings, but Spade needed to know the truth. He had a vague intuition, if they want to know who wanted to harm Arren, Spade needed to know the details of what happened 18 years ago.

For a brief moment, the Duke remained silent; Spade did not press him and simply waited. He knew how hard it was for the Duke.

It didn't take long for him to say, "His Majesty knows about the confidential event years ago, right?" Spade didn't respond, instead simply nodding to the Duke.

"That year was one of the hardest for the Empire and even more for me. That day... I regretted that I wasn't there with them, it was... very traumatic for my son," Duke Katz sighed heavily before continuing. "My wife... wasn't the only one killed that day; the nobles were in chaos, and many high-level personnel was killed. I... was with His Majesty when I heard the news. I thought security was already tight, but I underestimated the enemies' determination."

Spade remained silent throughout and only listened intently. His brows were tight.

"They... they really targeted my wife, and the force they deployed to... kill my wife was twice or even triple that of the other forces," the Duke said again, pausing. He continued after a brief period of silence, this time looking directly at Spade. The Duke's eyes were burning, and Spade knew it wasn't directed at him, but at someone else.
