Chapter 111: Chapter 113
"Sam told me this story once," Jack says, nearly ten minutes after Gabriel had begun telling it.
Gabriel scoffs. "You let me go through all this, and you already knew it? "
"You make it sound a lot funnier, though," Jack says.
"Well, obviously," Gabriel says. "Not only do I have infinitely more storytelling experience, but I also wasn't the one confessing to having STDs or getting hit in the balls. It's a lot funnier from my position."
"Sam didn't seem too upset about it," Jack says.
"Well, it's been almost a decade," Gabriel says. "For a human, that's a long time. I'm sure he's gotten over it."
God knows he was pissed when it happened. It took weeks for Sam to even sit down and talk to him. Gabriel basically had to spit out his whole life story, complete with quite a few tears, to even find an ounce of sympathy in the guy.
Although it really wasn't the shows themselves that pissed him off, if Gabriel remembers correctly. It was just about everything the shows. He was pissed that Gabriel wanted them to accept that they were the vessels. He was pissed that Gabriel knew they were the vessels and never mentioned it before. He was pissed that Gabriel took an interest in them particularly they were the vessels.
And, of course, Sam's biggest problem of all was that Gabriel had lied to him for years. They'd been hanging out since shortly after the Mystery Spot, as part of a special deal Gabriel made in exchange for saving Dean's life. And, in all that time, which ranged from coffee dates to some pretty intense sex, Gabriel refused to give him any name besides "the trickster." The fact that he had a whole double life — and was an , no less — and refused to tell him was, in Sam's eyes, the ultimate betrayal, and he had a hard time talking himself out of that one.
"I'm just gonna stand here silently until you remember that I'm right in front of you."
Gabriel chuckles half-heartedly. "Sorry. Lost in thought."
"I noticed," Jack says. "What were you thinking about?"
Part of him just wants to say "Sam," because Jack hasn't been through all the drama and probably doesn't understand the whole deal anyway — but he's not quite sure what Jack does and doesn't know, and he doesn't want to get into some deep, heart wrenching conversation right now. So instead, all he says is, "That trick. It was pretty great."
"It sounds great," Jack says. "I wish I could've been there for it."
"Trust me, Jack, no, you don't," Gabriel says. "No one who was actually involved in it thought it was fun."
"Weren't you involved in it?"
It's really hard to enjoy even your greatest tricks when you're essentially tricking your boyfriend to his death. He couldn't help but laugh at most of what they said and did, but it sure as hell wasn't for him, knowing that he was sending them to their doom — which, of course, didn't work out very well, but that's not important.
All Gabriel says is, "Except for me, obviously." Which isn't exactly a lie, because it hilarious in hindsight.
Jack just nods. Then, after a pause, he perks up even more. "Can you teach me how to be a trickster?"
Gabriel barks a laugh. "You're joking."
"What? No!"
"Jack, you don't have it in you," Gabriel says. "You couldn't hurt a fly."
"That's not true," Jack protests. "In my universe, I hunt monsters with Sam and Dean."
"But have you ever killed a human?" Gabriel challenges.
"I –" Jack looks down at the floor, ashamed.
"My god, you have," Gabriel mutters. "Well, mark that down as the biggest surprise of the century. What did that have to do to get you to kill them?" This has to be juicy.
"It was an accident," Jack says quietly.
Gabriel gapes at him. "You killed someone?"
Jack just nods.
"How did you manage that?"
"I just... I don't have very good control over my powers."
"Ah," Gabriel says. "Now one I can help you with."
