”Never thought a human wagon would willingly escort me to the edge of Mirewood,” I said to Melyiana as we approached the ancient forest.
“Never thought you’d marry a human either,” Melyiana said.
I tilted my head and said, “Nor I.”
“Your parents are going to be curious about how the marriage is fairing. Are you going to tell them about the assassination attempts?”
“It’s water under the bridge, now,” I said with a shrug.
“Well someone keeps bucketing it back upstream for it to return again and again,” she said and folded her arms.
The carriage halted and the driver said, “This is far enough. We’d like to make it far away before sundown!”
Melyiana and I exited and one of the soldiers said, “Remember, the fortress of Surchester in one week’s time.”
“We’ll be there,” I said.
“Thank you for the ride, gentlemen,” Melyiana gestured with a sarcastic bow.
After surprised greetings from the border guards, we continued our trek deeper towards the heart of the forest, towards home.
