Alex of course didn't recklessly go and try to devour the the unique jagras even if he REALLY wanted to. Instead he shared his theory with the scholars who after reviewing it with each other agreed that it certainly fit with the evidence they had. Once this agreement was had they reported it to the commander who was rather surprised by the find. Alex took that moment to explain his plan to the commander and scholars and the benefits it could have. Basically Alex said that he would devour the monster in hopes of unlocking it's telepathy for himself to allow himself to "speak".
The commander narrowed his eyes at Alex with a serious expression. "How high is the chance of you succeeding in gaining this adaptation?" He asked in a tone that demanded a straight answer. 'If I am fully focused on it during the process , about a seventy five percent chance.' Alex wrote out honestly. "Hmmm , that's a fairly good chance of success , though is there anything we can do to increase it?" The man asked with a thoughtful expression. Alex shook his head 'not unless you can find other creatures with the same trait' he wrote honestly.
"It's worth a shot in any case so I'll authorize you to conduct the attempt so long as you are allowed to be carefully observed during the process , agreed?" The man asked sternly. Alex grimaced but nodded in acceptance at this condition much to the scholars joy. It was a popular topic in their circle to try and figure out how his adaptation worked but without studying him during the process all they had to go on was speculation. Thanks to Roya constantly bothering him for her own studies everyone had noticed how averse to being studied Alex was becoming which had stopped them from asking him to do so.
This scenario solved this issue however so they were thrilled and had no problem at all condemning the mutant jagras to death as a result. The small monster was humanely dispatched with it's head chopped off before the corpse was given to Alex without much fanfare. Alex didn't mind eating it raw since he was already very uncomfortable from the many sets of eyes watching him eagerly. Alex focused his mind on what he wanted from the monster as he took his first bite of the corpse followed by the second and third and before he knew it he was done.
*CONGRATULATIONS ON DISCOVERING THE ULTRA RARE RANKED TRAIT [telepathy] , AUTOMATIC UNLOCK REWARDED. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!*
The system notification blared out in Alex's vision stunning him before he felt his head throbbing in pain making him grit his teeth and close his eyes to endure it. As a result of this he didn't notice how the scales on his head shed off and were replaced by nearly identical ones. The difference however was that the red birth mark on his forehead spread at the sharp points down his snout , neck and the side of his head.
The scholars were practically in a frenzy at the visual difference that the instant unlock of the trait brought to Alex's appearance. Alex felt the headache fade away after five minutes and he finally opened his eyes. 'Ugh , that was rough.' he thought and all the scholars froze with wide eyed expression. 'Judging from your expressions I said that out loud didn't I?' Alex thought towards the scholars this time rather than openly. Alex was thankful that new traits came with instinctual instruction on how to use them so he quick grasped how to control what he "says".
There was a massive celebration in astera that night when the news that Alex could now "speak" came out. Alex was flooded with people chatting him up during the celebration as many were eager to actually hold a conversation with him rather than needing to read something whenever he added his input. An interesting thing to note for Alex was that according to everyone he asked his "voice" sounded like a mix between the admiral and Zain , but with a sort of imperious air to it.
