Chapter 4: Chapter 4 - Going Over Information

'System Activate.'

As she said the words in her mind, a semi-transparent screen appeared before her eyes. However she knew instantly that this screen wasn't real— it simply existed within her mind, and only she could see it.

Skills:

Hivemind - The user is a hive mind— a being that is connected to many other beings through an innate mental link. The user is able to be any of the beings linked in the hive mind at once— while still retaining individuality. The limit of hive units is determined by the mental strength of the user.

Adapt, Evolve, Overcome - The user is able to gain traits from the things that they absorb or devour. Evolving to suit the user until they are able to use it to overcome situations.

Mimic Creation - The user is able to use mass and energy in order to create mimics, the hive units that serve the Broodmother. The user is currently able to make basic mimics only: Worker Mimic, Scout Mimic, and Melee Hunting Mimic.

Other abilities are dormant until the user has fully awakened]

Looking over the transparent screen that appeared in her mind she couldn't help but smile with satisfaction.

She had just woken up in this body and yet she had already found herself above the physical capabilities of a human— she knew this because the average human had 10 in all physical stats, with well-trained humans having around 15.

Most humans had energy below 10— and that wasn't something they would grow normally.

She knew this information thanks to her blood— blood that carried on bits and pieces of information of her long-fallen race.

Another thing she took note of was her skills— she already knew them thanks to them being engraved in her blood but the information panel really helped clear and focus her mind.

Adapt, Evolve, Overcome.

The skill that made her species one of the most feared species by those that knew of it, and also the cause of her species' downfall.

This ability allowed her to eat— or absorb, all forms of matter into her body in order to break it down and eventually gain traits linked to it.

But not just gain traits— said traits were then evolved and made specifically to suit her body and needs, making it the perfect skill to become stronger with.

However, there was a limitation.

It took time— and matter, lots of matter.

Her body would need to break down and understand the information of the thing she eats before it could evolve a skill to suit her— this took her having to eat a lot of that thing for it to work.

This was one of the reasons her species went extinct— they ate everything they came across until nothing was left to eat, dying due to their own starvation and foolishness.

However, that wouldn't happen to her.

Not only did she not have any other of her species to compete with and eat things, but she also had a consciousness that her species didn't have.

Normally they acted on instincts, with little self-control.

But thanks to her life as a human she had that self-control they lacked. Meaning she would know when too much was in fact, a problem.

Moving on from that ability she focused on perhaps the most important— and main ability— of her entire species.

Mimic Creation.

Mimics are what the units that a broodmother could create were called— due to the simple fact that they were able to mimic the appearance and traits of anything they adapted to.

This granted them an edge in all terrains because they could simply adapt to fit it.

That's not to say it was easy.

Creating a mimic and changing their traits all took a combination of mass and energy, not to mention she herself needed to have the trait to grant it to a mimic.

This meant she would need to absorb all forms of matter and energy in order to create members of her hive— with the stronger the unit being, the more of both it would cost her.

This was one of the reasons her species conquered so much and eventually died out.

Currently however she didn't have enough mass to create even the most basic of mimics, a worker mimic.

Called workers because of their programmed instincts, they primarily gather resources and forge for food in order to feed the hive. They are so weak at the start that even normal people could kill them.

Scouts were useful because they were quick, agile, and as the name would suggest— built for scouting. They were great at finding locations, or tracking prey, and when paired with a hunting unit, they were deadly.

Hunting Units, as the name suggests, were mimics that were primarily focused on fighting, be it melee like the basic ones, or even ranged like future ones. They fought animals, people, and all sorts of things for the hive.

And these were just the basic units she could make one because she lacked the power and knowledge to make more. But in theory, she could make units that can do anything she wanted— as long as she had the right things.

And she planned to do just that.

For her goal to take shape, she would need to make a massive and powerful hive, one unrivaled by all else.

What was her goal you may ask?

To conquer.

It was a goal that came engraved in her blood, to evolve and conquer all that there is to conquer. And she had no reason to fight this goal— because she knew it would be a lot of fun.

So she had full intention of conquering everything she wanted to conquer.

In the way that she wanted to do it, that is.

This naturally didn't mean she was going to go and just kill everyone and everything— she had a plan to make.

And the first step in doing that was to make hive members, so she needed to find some materials.

Chapter 5: Chapter 5 - Eating Dirt

She decided she should make a few workers and maybe a scout while she was in the forest because it would be the best place to grow undetected by human life until she was ready to go out.

The forest seemed like it lacked any form of human intervention— it had no signs of footsteps, no paths made, nothing that would give her a sign that humans were here.

Meaning it was most likely inhabitants or untouched by humans, which was great.

The animals in the forest wouldn't pose too much of a threat to her in her current stats— that is unless she came across either a pack of them or a strong animal.

But seeing as she hadn't seen a single animal during her walk her, she wasn't too worried.

She actually hoped she would be attacked by something.

Then she could devour it and take not only its mass, which she can use to make hive units or power herself up further, but also start learning their traits.

But with no animals currently available she made do with what she currently had, a lot of dirt, stone, and water.

While it wasn't as good as other materials— especially flesh— it was still mass, and would still attribute to the making of her hive.

It just wouldn't be very useful— but something was better than nothing.

'I wonder how it'll taste?'

She wasnt worried about the aftereffects of eating things such as dirt or stone, because unless the thing she ate was truly poisonous, her body would be able to break it down with no issue.

It was one of the perks that came with her body being the way it was. However, it didn't completely stop her from tasting how the thing she ate would taste to a member of her species.

Which made her curious.

So, scooping up a handful of dirt she placed it in her mouth and chewed, swallowing it. She didn't have to worry about any germs on it, and while she did feel weird eating dirt that was just laying around the forest, she knew it would help her grow.

So she ignored the human parts of her that lingered with thoughts of opposition.

Surprisingly it didn't taste terrible.

It wasnt any sort of quality meal— it didn't even taste good— it just didn't taste bad.

If there was one way she could describe it, it would be extremely salty.

Like very salty.

It tasted almost as if she was drinking seawater with how salty it was.

Wrinkling her lips a little at the taste, since she didn't like overly salty things— she decided to wash it down with some water.

Unsurprisingly water tasted the same as it always had, it wasnt like water had a flavor, to begin with.

She decided to next taste stone— which was a bit harder to do because of the texture of the stone.

It was hard— even the small peddles she found near the water were quite hard, and if it wasnt for her enhanced physical capabilities she wouldn't have been able to do what she wanted to do.

'I really hope I don't choke on these this. While I know that eating it wouldn't harm me from what my instincts are yelling, I can't help but doubt it. Maybe it's my human past talking.'

Ignoring her human commonsense of not putting a stone in her mouth, she did it anyways, and bit down on it hard.

It cracked instantly— thanks to her strength and durability that was both above the level of a human— adding to the power her teeth had.

The bits and pieces of it slipped down her throat as she swallowed it, hurting very slightly because of the rough texture it had going down her throat.

Its taste was odd to say the least. It taste somewhat like nothing, but had a taste of the same thing.

It was like eating ice— where it doesn't have a taste yet did.

'Definitely strange.'

She thought to herself as she finished it.

With that out of the way— she wanted to know how much a handful of dirt and a peddle the size of her nail would give her in mass— so she summoned her status.

Checking her mass on her status panel she saw she now had 2 points at mass— which meant that both either gave her 1 point each, or one gave her a decimal amount.

But she decided to go with the idea that it gave 1 each.

It wasnt a bad amount, to say the least, especially for being such a common material.

The only issue was that she intended to use 100 mass to make her first worker unit, which was the bare minimum she could do without it dying within days.

That meant she needed to eat a lot of dirt or stones for this to work.

Dirt was easier to eat so she decided to go with that for her main source of mass.

With a sigh, she started eating away at the dirt, not worrying about overfilling herself since her body would store it easily.

It took her about an hour to eat enough dirt to collect up a total of 100 points in mass, she also ate a few stones in between just to have some variety in the taste, but it was worth it in the end.

The only reason it even took an entire hour to eat so much dirt was because she took short breaks in between some in order to wash her mouth of the salty taste.

It got very disgusting very quickly with how much she was eating.

But she had finally done it— and just in time too because it was getting rather dark.

A worker could be useful for gathering in the dark or even distracting anything that tried to attack her.

'Finally have enough to create one, let's see how this works. I wonder how it feels.'

She instinctually knew how to make a hive unit— she just never tried it before so she had no idea how it would actually be.

How it would feel.
