It was too dark to see anything past the doorway, but seeing that freedom was so easily within reach made Jayde extremely happy.
Jayde searched through the people below, hoping she would see or catch a whiff of Ryuu or her mother. Maybe she’d find Tucker. With the way the warriors holding swords were swiftly taking down those with guns, she thought it’d be easy to find at least one of them as the crowd thinned slightly. But she didn’t see any of them.
Another explosion rocked the building, sending up dust and smoke as the walls shook. It was louder and stronger this time, scaring Evelynn and Jayde. They screamed and dropped to their knees, squeezing their eyes shut as pieces of wall came flying by or near to them. Fragments came down from the ceiling as it cracked.
