Chapter 32: Something Unspoken

Bolin kept his word and had lunch with me but promptly left after. He said he had to take care of a few things, so I was left on my own. As soon as everyone was gone, Mago busted out, "What was that!? Were you two flirting? In front of me!?"

I roll my eyes as I walk back to the empty room, not giving Mago an explanation. To be honest? I don't even know myself. I'm always getting caught up in his pace, not even realizing what I'm doing until it's too late.

But, he doesn't treat me bad. My mind drifts as I think back to how I didn't really mind him carrying me. If anything, I was relieved to see him show up.

I frown at that, not knowing how to feel about my own reactions toward the man.

"Lyra" Mago calls out, breaking me out of my thoughts and back to the problem at hand. I sigh as I sit in the middle of the floor once again and say, "Mago, I just want to focus on going back home." Mago remains silent for a few moments before softly saying, "Home is wherever you are Master."

I blink in surprise before softly smiling. I lift my hand and place my fingers over the tiny mirror as I say, "You're right Mago, home is wherever we make it." I lift my hand, calling the last of the grey power out.

Once again, I mix in my magic and watch as the two spin before merging as one. I coat my hand and lift it, dragging it across the air. The air before me ripples before opening. My heart surges in excitement as I keep a steady flow of magic into it.

I didn't want it to collapse. "Master! You did it! You really did it!!" My heart races as I slowly stand up and walk closer. I lift my hand but stop short. Inside the ripple, I see a large tree but it's not normal. Golden light bleeds from the tree as if it was giving off light instead of oxygen.

I look around the tree, but the rest seems empty. Only the tree stands in the space but the longer I look at it, the more I want to go to it. It was as if I had heard a siren's call, but without the actual siren. It was silent, not a sound could be heard.

I lift my foot and step in, shivering at the temperature difference. It was cold, but the golden light coming off the tree was warm. Oh, so very warm. I make sure to keep a steady flow of magic into the ripple as I make my way over to the tree.

When only a few steps away, I realize the golden light was indeed just that. They looked like small bubbles of light that slowly moved out and away from the large tree in a lazy manner. I hesitate, wanting to move closer but also feeling that I was on sacred ground of some kind.

Suddenly, the ground below me begins to glow a soft golden color. It slowly stretched forward, towards the tree. It was as if it was giving me permission to come closer. I lift my foot and place it on the ground, watching as the golden color intensifies.

As I step closer, a golden bubble of light floats down in front of me causing me to stop. In awe, I slowly lift my hand. The golden bubble of light reflects in my eyes as it slowly falls into the palm of my hand. My breath can be seen in the cold air as my heart races with wonder.

The second it touches my hand; my body absorbs it. Warmth, unlike anything I've ever known, comes rushing through me, nearly bringing me to my knees. I suck in, tears burning in my eyes as I bring my hand up to my chest.

So warm and kind, it felt like the purest form of love. I let out a small sob, holding my chest as I look up at the tree with awe. What is this place? What was this tree? How was any of this possible? The path before me begins to glow again, beckoning me forward.

A single tear falls as I take a shaky step forward, still unsure and afraid but for some reason, I felt safe. As if I was in a mother's embrace. The golden bubbles of light continue to float around me as I reach the tree, unsure of what to do or why I was even doing this.

I look up at the large tree, unable to comprehend its sheer size and existence. I slowly lift my hand, wanting to place it on the solid black tree but pause. The golden bubbles of light begin to gather around my hand and the tree as if encouraging me.

I slowly place my hand on the tree and watch in amazement as the whole tree lights up like a golden beacon. The light was so intense, I try to pull away and close my eyes but in a moment of horror, I realize I can't move.

Warmth floods within me as my eyes burn from the golden light. A vortex of golden bubbles of light swirl around the entire tree before plummeting into me. Something in me opens, consuming the golden light at a pace that left me panting.

Suddenly, it stops. I fall to my knees before the tree, cradling my hand against my chest as tears continue to pour down my face. Whatever the golden light was, it was now moving within me, changing things at my very core.

All I could manage was shallow breaths as I wait for it to stop.

Soon, it disappears, and I'm left kneeling before the tree with shaking hands. I swallow hard as I look back up at the tree. It remains the same, grand and imposing as golden bubbles of light continue to silently float around us.

I don't know how long I remained like that but when the golden light bubbles began to make a trail, I turn and find that it was pointing to where I came from. A part of me didn't want to leave, I wanted to stay in this peaceful moment, embraced by warmth I've never known.

The other part forced myself to stand and walk back to the ripple. When I reach the edge, I turn back to look at the tree. It stands unmoving, just like it had when I first arrived but somehow, I felt like a part of it was now with me.

Grateful, I bow to the tree to show my respect before stepping through the ripple.

Immediately I hear Mago yelling, "Maaaaaster, I've lost you again. Please don't die and leave Mago all alone!!!" I blink in surprise as I say, "I'm right here, what are you fussing about?" Mago grows quiet before crying again.

"When you went in, I couldn't follow you! I was stuck here in the candle holder!!" He cries making me slightly smile. I look over to the candle holder and sure enough, it was reflective enough for him to remain in.

I lightly pat the necklace as I say, "Calm down, I'm back now and nothing bad has happened. On another note, maybe you aren't as limited in this world as we originally thought." Mago grows quiet before saying, "You mean I can spy on people here as well?"

My smile turns devious as I say, "Exactly."
