Ruby and Marquess Barnette widened their eyes after they heard the man's words. They repeatedly rubbed their eyes to ensure that they were not hallucinating.

However, no matter how many times Ruby rubbed her eyes, the man was still standing and looked like a real person. His physical features had not changed at all, so Ruby concluded that she was not dreaming.
