Rei went to Kataoka's office after an hour as he was told.
*knock**knock*
Rei knocked on Kataoka's office door.
"Come in", said Kataoka as he heard the knock on the door.
Rei entered the office feeling unusually nervous.
He didn't know why but whenever he was in Kataoka's presence he felt pressured for some reason.
Kataoka gestured for Rei to sit down in the seat in front of him.
"I don't like wasting time so let's cut to the chase. You know your skills and yet for some reason, you are applying to be on the 2nd string. It's been a while since a saw something this ridiculous", said Kataoka.
Rei stayed silent in response, so he continued.
"There should be a reason why you have not gotten a baseball scholarship", said Kataoka seriously.
"I haven't been on a baseball team ever before", said Rei answering Kataoka's question.
Rei's response surprised Kataoka but his expression remained the same.
"Then how did you learn baseball?", questioned Kataoka curiously.
"I am self-taught", said Rei. He knew he had to make a story to back himself up. So, he came up with this idea.
Rei's response made Kataoka widen his eyes in surprise. But his reaction was hidden since he was wearing his shades.
Rei thought something was wrong with the coach because he didn't reply to him for a while.
"Seems like I have to re-evaluate him", thought Kataoka.
Thinking for a while, he came to a decision. He thought that this decision would benefit the team greatly.
"Don't be arrogant with the skills you have, there are many people who are above you", said Kataoka.
Rei nodded and Kataoka could sense that the kid didn't have an ounce of arrogance in his eyes.
"Moving on to the topic, I want you to join the 1st string team. There were 3 openings in the team before but recently a 3rd year got injured and had to move to the 2nd string so that's why there's another opening available", said Kataoka seriously.
Some people might think that Kataoka was being hasty by putting Rei in the 1st string. But which coach could resist such a good player?
Rei could pitch around 140 KM this speed is high even for 1st string members then shouldn't he surround himself with more competition so he can grow even more?
Rei nodded seriously accepting Kataoka's request. But in his mind, he was screaming in joy seeing the system notification in front of him and getting this offer.
He never thought that he would be offered something like this, he thought that he would have to work his way up.
Because in the anime there were only 3 openings but somehow there were 4 openings now. Maybe him being here changed something.
He shrugged thinking it was useless to think about such stuff.
"Good you will be a great addition to the current team", said Kataoka happily.
They both shook hands with each other in celebration.
"You can meet the team in the next week because school is officially starting then and You should also move to the dorm because we will be training every morning and I don't want you to be late even a second", said Kataoka seriously and went back to his work in his office.
Rei left the office after bowing toward Kataoka.
Looking at Rei's back Kataoka thought, "He's an unpolished gem. His potential is high. He might turn out to be better than any pitcher that has ever been on Seido's baseball team".
Rei smirked standing outside Kataoka's office and started laughing, "Hahahaha…. I can't believe this is happening. Isn't everything moving too fast".
"Go celebrate somewhere else", yelled Kataoka from his office. He could hear Rei's laugh in the office.
"HAIII", yelled Rei subconsciously and ran towards the exit of the school.
His mom was going to be there anytime now since it was almost 4 in the afternoon.
Arriving at the exit he saw his mom and entered her car.
"How was the test? You have no idea how nervous your father and I were because of you. So, bad news or good news", asked Chiaki while driving.
"I have bad news and good news. What do you want to hear first", said Rei playfully.
"Just go with the good news first. I'm already nervous as it is", said Chiaki.
Rei nodded and told his mother about everything that happened during the test. He even told her about how the coach offered him a place on the 1st string team.
When Chiaki heard this, she couldn't help but yell in joy while she was driving. She was happy for her son, and she was proud of him. She didn't expect her son to be this good. She was aware of the players on the 1st string they were on a whole new level.
"What about the bad news?", asked Chiaki.
"Oh, yeah…The coach recommended I live in the dorm that the school provides for baseball players. I mean I love my room at my own house but I kind of don't want to miss this chance. This is bad news because I thought you might not really like this", said Rei nervously. He wanted his mom to approve of him going to the dorm.
As soon as Chiaki heard about the dorm she pulled over and nagged at Rei telling him about the bad things that could happen in a dorm.
Rei just listened quietly not interrupting his mom while she was nagging.
After Chiaki got everything out, she said, "Haaa…. I guess I can't hold you back. Even though I don't like it I don't want you to hate me after all".
Rei smiled; he was happy that his mother agreed for him to go. Even if she didn't, he would have left the house sneakily, but he thought it was better to ask his mom.
They arrived home after some minutes.
When Rei's family got to know about him getting into the 1st string, they all congratulated him.
"Hahaha…. he's my grandson after all", said grandpa while laughing.
"It's because he has my genes", said Reiji seriously.
Because of Reiji's comment, Chiaki started arguing with him.
Personally, Rei was totally on his mom's side in this matter. He doesn't know why his father always brings up the topic of genetics.
During their dinner, Rei told them about the dorm situation, and they agreed to it quickly which made it seem like they didn't care.
Anyways after their celebration, Rei went back to his room.
Before Rei could sleep, he decided to check the notification he had gotten during the talk with the coach.
[Mission 'Seido High School', successfully completed]
[Would you like to claim your Reward?]
"Yes", said Rei in anticipation.
[Host has exceeded the mission requirements]
[Recalculating Reward….]
['A level up' and 'a System Shop' has been rewarded]
Rei smirked seeing the notifications.
"Well, this is unexpected", thought Rei.
He wanted to check his progress since he has gotten a level up as a reward and tried opening his status, but he couldn't.
[System offline…]
[System upgrading….]
Seeing the notifications, he shrugged and fell asleep.

A new day has started, sun rays shone in Rei's room waking him up.
Rei woke up feeling lazy but suddenly he remembered something that made him active again.
He went to the bathroom quickly and freshened up before his dad did. He tried his best to go to the bathroom before his dad because nobody would want to go in after him.
He shivered just thinking about it.
Anyways, today he was excited because his system was going to upgrade.
Before sleeping the system had gone offline for an upgrade.
He opened the system interface with anticipation.
[system reactivating….]
[system online….]
[System Upgraded]
Rei opened the system interface with anticipation to see the new changes.
[Mission] [Daily Quests] [Status] [Shop]
He saw a new tab available on the interface.
Rei clicked the [Shop] tab curiously.
[Shop
Weighted body suit (30 Pounds)
Temporarily Raising a Stat Serum
Training Equipment
...]
There were all kinds of things in the shop.
Looking at the shop items Rei wanted to buy everything.
"How can I buy items from the shop", asked Rei curiously while scrolling down the list of items available in the shop.
[Host can purchase items using coins. You can get coins through daily missions]
Rei nodded taking this information seriously.
He opened his status interface.

Rei smirked seeing the result of his reward.
There was a new category about coins in his status.
All his stats increased by 0.5 points because of the level-up.
What shocked him the most about the level-up were his stats. He had to do hardcore workouts every day to increase his stats previously but with just a level up his stats increased and he didn't even have to do anything.
This made look like exercise was a waste of time.
He shook his head trying to erase these negative thoughts.
Rei had to think about what way would he purchase things from the system.
"Coins...", thought Rei.
He decided he would complete a daily mission today for coins because he wanted to buy something from the shop.
Stretching he got off his bed and changed his clothes to his gym outfit. He's wearing the same outfit as before because now Rei had stopped caring about his outfit thinking that it was a waste of time to decide on an outfit beforehand.
He exited his room and went downstairs.
He received 'good mornings' from his family when he entered the living room.
They all ate breakfast and then after a while, Chiaki drove Rei to the field. This was Rei's daily routine for now. It will change when he moves to the dorm for obvious reasons.
Arriving at the field Rei opened the system shop interface and scrolled down the list of items it had.
As Rei was thinking of buying an item a notification popped up.
[Host has been rewarded a gift from the system for upgrading it. Would you like to open it?]
Rei was excited reading the blue screen. He said, "YES".
[Host, has gained 10 coins.]
Rei smirked seeing his reward. He was grateful that he had received coins for his reward. Which made it easier for him to buy items from the shop.
Rei wanted to buy something cheap since he didn't have many coins. The reason he was buying something now even though he didn't need it was because he wanted to see how the transaction would be processed and how he would receive the item.
He saw many awesome items for baseball he wanted to buy them thinking they were a must-have. He didn't even know he needed the items.
Rei finally found something cheap in the store.
He clicked on the item wanting to know about it and its price.
[Compact adjustable Tire-
A tire that can be adjusted to any weight and can fit into your pocket. When finished using the item press the button hidden inside the tire to shrink it. It can shrink to the size of your pocket. You can enlarge the tire by attaching a rope to it. Can be used while traveling.
Price- 1 coin
BUY NOW!!]
Rei pressed the big red button recklessly as soon as he saw the price of the product.
"What a steal", he thought.
[Purchasing 'Compact Adjustable Tire'. Are you sure you want to buy this?]
"Yes", said Rei enthisastically.
[1 coin deducted…..]
['Compact Adjustable Tire' successfully purchased]
[The item has been placed in your inventory safely.]
"Wait…. I have an inventory", thought Rei flabbergasted. He didn't even know he had it or else he would have used it every day for so many things.
Before he thought of several stupid things, he could use the inventory for a blue screen popped up.
[The inventory can only store items bought from the system shop]
All of Rei's dreams shattered after reading that one line.
He sighed disappointingly.
Since he wanted to access his inventory, he opened his system interface.
[Mission] [Daily Quests] [Status] [Shop] [Inventory]
He saw the new tab [Inventory] and clicked on it.
A blue screen popped up in front of him that had several cubes in them.
Rei felt like the cubes were infinite. He tried scrolling to the end, but new cubes kept popping up.
Giving up on trying to find the end of the inventory he saw the item he bought from the system in the first cube.
He clicked on it and a small tire-looking object pixelized in his palm.
"What is this….", thought Rei when he saw the tiny tire in his palm.
He freaked out seeing this tiny tire. He thought that the system might have scammed him.
"Did I lose my money over this?", thought Rei squinting his eyes at the tiny tire.
"Oh, didn't the system say that it was adjustable", thought Rei.
He took out his usual tire rope and tied it onto the tire in his palms. It was frustratingly hard to tie the rope to the tiny tire.
It took Rei several tries in several weird positions to successfully tie the rope.
Rei gasped heavily after he successfully tied the rope.
The tire enlarged to a car-size tire which Rei normally used.
Rei attached the tire to him and started running.
After 10 minutes he was on the ground breathing heavily.
"I…. really…have…to work on my speed", he thought.
He decided to work on his speed all week before moving to his dorm.
Rei ran with a tire attached for 4 hours while taking many breaks before his mom came to pick him up.
When he reached home, he ran to his room.
He freshened up and changed his clothes before hitting the bed.
Rei decided to check his status before sleeping since he had purchased something today, he was curious about the changes.

Rei nodded seeing the changes in his status.
It seemed like he gained 0.2 points in speed because of the training he did with the tire today.
Closing his status, he fell asleep on his bed excited for the day school started. He couldn't wait to meet everyone on the team, especially Sawamura.
