'These are my people,' Ray let out as he looked at Jack and Ava, almost like he was challenging the two of them to disapprove.

Various grunts, calls, and gestures were issued in greeting from the stretched bodies in the room as they realized Ray was back.

But the most enthusiastic reaction came from the little figure with his nose pressed to the television. 'Ray!' he shouted and bounced over.

'My brother, Rolland,' Ray announced proudly, knocking knuckles with the lad. 'Hey, could we smoke less in here?' he called to the others. 'You know how it messes with Ro's asthma and shit.'

'Ain't nothing wrong with me, Ray,' protested Rolland fiercely.

'Sorry, man,' a big guy whose bruised face and resigned tone suggested his life was one long losing battle, called in apology. 'So, how'd it go?'

'Not good, Puffy,' Ray said to him. 'They're not interested in banding up. They are wolves now.'
