“I need to leave for Japan,” Zale said to me over breakfast the next morning.

I looked up at him, a little surprised. Why on earth would he need to go to Japan? And so all of a sudden?

“What?” I asked, my voice filled with confusion. “What’s in Japan?”

Zale sighed, turning away from me slightly.

“Another company that we want to do a trade with,” he said simply. “They’re insisting on having a meeting face to face before they move forward with any kind of trade deal.”

Oh, that made sense, I guess.

“What time are you leaving?” I asked again, still trying to process everything that he had said to me.

“Within the hour,” Zale said, turning an apologetic look on me. “I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you any sooner, but it really was a spur of the moment thing on my side, too. I only discovered it about two hours ago. The company really needs me to do this.”
