Felix was so worried about Asher getting disgusted. However, his visible discomfort regarding those thoughts gave the wrong idea to Asher.

When he saw the duke seemingly displeased and dissappointed, Asher's smile immedietly got wiped away as he mistook that expression as his skills for this being really poor and not even being enough.

"Then… the duke must hate it."

Felix hesitantly told his reason. He didn't want to say he liked it but he didn't want to say he hated it either. Since he didn't want to see Asher upset, he ended up explaining his worries, but not with much details though.
