Chapter 35: Who slept on the sofa?

As Emma listened to the housekeeper's gossip. She began to feel uneasy. She sensed that they had alternative motives beyond just cleaning her room.

Just as she was contemplating this, she overheard one of the housekeepers ask, "Oh, who slept on the sofa last night?"

My husband!!

He loves to sleep on the sofa!!!

Emma couldn't help but notice the blanket on the sofa and knew she used to move it to the bed every morning before the housekeepers arrive to clean her room, but today she forgot.

However, Emma tried to evade any conflict and responded calmly. "It was very hot last night so I threw it on the sofa."

Emma could sense that her explanation was unconvincing but she recognized that the housekeepers were just being direct and honest with her.

As the conversation continued one of the maids pointed toward the air conditioner and asked why it was not turned on.

Emma responded, "I did turn it on, but the air conditioner was not enough." The maids all smiled and one of them complimented Emma.

Then one of the maids stepped forward, her voice filled with earnestness as she addressed Emma, "Young mistress, there is something I must bring to your attention."

Emma nodded, silently encouraging the maid to proceed.

"We are like a family, bound together through time. Our lives are intertwined, and our devotion to you knows no bounds. We long for your trust, promising to guard it fiercely. Please know that you can confide in us with absolute certainty.", the maid expressed, resuming her duties afterward.

Despite the pleasantness of their words, Emma remained undeterred.

She understood that beneath the veneer of saccharine sweetness lay an ulterior motive, their intention extending beyond building trust.

She pondered silently, contemplating whether her aunt had dispatched them solely for this ostensible message.

Could there be something more hidden amidst their carefully chosen words?
