Chapter 2: Realization

Whenever Frisk freaks out, he doesn't like to scream or cry. Most of the time, he just tries to use cold logic to hold back the ever-growing pressure of anxiety that threatens to blow.

"Really, it's not that hard to figure out. I'm not Frisk; my SOUL is different; I can't reset. Flowey can though, and now he is probably waiting to kil- Stop! Not helping. Not helping."

Whenever he freaks out, Frisk also likes to talk to himself.

"Is it even possible to beat someone who can just reload after losing? Isn't this unfair for a game? Stupid! Everything feels so real. You should have realized before that this is not a game." Frisk continued to mutter while sitting with his arms holding his knees on the field of yellow flowers.

"Ahhh!" Frisk cried out and struck the ground with all of his strength.

This actually helped, because when Frisk saw that same yellow-purple barrier that had protected him before and how this time the ground actually seemed to give away at the strength of his punch, it distracted him. He remembered he wasn't completely powerless; he had this force field the same color as his soul that boosted his strength.

"Actually, with all of the similarities, maybe this is Aura from RWBY. Or some kind of Undertale equivalent, at least. And the color... hmm, if I remember correctly, yellow is JUSTICE and purple is PERSEVERANCE. I don't really remember what the different SOUL types do, but those are the make up of my SOUL." Frisk said the last part with a small smile and was actually a little bit impressed. It wasn't Determination, but he's pretty sure dual souls are rare.

With these thoughts distracting him, Frisk finally calmed down a bit. He took multiple deep breaths and stood up, making sure to relax the tension that had built up in his limbs. There wasn't any use in freaking out, and a killer flower was in the next room, presumably waiting for him. Right now, the best thing he could do was try and get any advantage that he could. So Frisk sat back down on the flowers and calmed his mind as much as he could. Closing his eyes, Frisk missed the movement of the flowers on his right.

"Envision what happened during the fight." breath in... breath out, "I'm about to be attacked!"

Now Frisk could feel something deep in his chest. There was a sort of warm feeling. When he felt like he was in danger, it spread throughout his body. Taking hold of the metaphorical substance was difficult, but with a lot of concentration, he was able to stay in the protected state.

He opened his eyes, and marveled at the glimmering barrier that encompassed his body. It felt like he was just better. Stronger, faster, smarter, and even more aware of his surroundings. Now that he thought about it, though, there was a weird feeling coming from his right. Almost like a tingle that was warning him abou-

"Howdy! I'm FLOWEY. FLOWEY the FLOWER!"

The warm feeling vanished as Frisk flew to his feet, taking a few hurried steps away from the anthropomorphized flower that had scared the shit out of him. Frisk looked warily at Flowey, wondering how long he had been spying on him.

"Hmmm... but you already knew that, didn't you?" Frisk's eyes widened as Flowey's face grew into that same demonic smile.

"H-how much did you hear?" Frisk panicked. He was hoping that he could somehow convince Flowey to not mess with him by being too annoying to kill. But if Flowey knows that Frisk can remember the resets, there is no telling what he would do.

"HAH hah hahaha!" Flowey croaked out in demonic laughter, "This. is. AMAZING. You remember our fight, don't you? And you're scared of me now too; you weren't before, which means you must have some idea of the power that I wield." Flowey boasted, as Frisk's mind was rapidly trying to decide how to respond.

"Just what Was that barrier anyway?" Flowey questioned, "I think you called it Aura? Is it from the surface? I don't believe any of the other humans who fell down before you had it."

Damn, that wasn't just in the game. Flowey really does like to ask questions without giving people any time to answer. Frisk calmed himself as much as he could and slid into a half-remembered Taekwondo fighting stance. Talking right now would only end up with him giving more information away.

Flowey was getting irritated with Frisk's lack of response. "Well if you're not going to answer me then you can just DIE!" The shadows lengthened and Frisk's heart shone on his chest.

Frisk was expecting the same white pellets from earlier but was taken off guard when a thorny vine burst from the ground under his feet and encircled his leg.

"Shit!" were the only words Frisk was able to say before he was dragged across the ground, Flowey cackling in the background.

*Bang*

Frisk was tossed into the wall of the cave, crashing against it with not an insignificant amount of force. Frisk's entire body lit up in pain. It wasn't the worst he had ever felt, but it was close. His SOUL felt like it was pierced with little thorns, and his back was probably going to be one big bruise.

"Huh, what happened to that barrier?" Flowey asked as he popped out of the ground, almost on top of Frisk. "Did it break?"

The barrier had not broken. Frisk just wasn't good enough at Aura to constantly keep it on. In his surprise, Frisk's concentration was completely broken. Ready now and with the need to get back to his feet, Frisk searched within himself and brought that warm sensation to the surface. Coating his body with the purple-yellow field and slowly starting to heal the wounds he took from being dragged across the ground and slammed into a wall.

Jumping to his feet with surprising agility, Frisk lunged at Flowey with a low roundhouse kick that sailed right through the place Flowey had been a second before. Frisk then took off at a run, knowing that staying in the same place would probably mean getting slammed into the wall again.

Both keeping an eye out for Flowey, running, and keeping up his Aura was too much for Frisk to do at the same time, and that warm sensation slid back into his chest right as Flowey burst from the surface on the opposite end of the room.

"HAHAHAHA! This is interesting. Yes, Human, I'll allow you to entertain me!" Flowey mocked as dozens of spinning white pellets came flying at Frisk from all directions.

Knowing how bullet hell games usually go, Frisk ran for the nearest gap in the pellets before they could surround him. He dove through and barely made it out safe on the other side. Getting back to his feet as quickly as possible, Frisk distinctly felt his still aching back. This caused him to pause and focus back on bringing his Aura back out.

"Tsk, tsk, tsk, not paying attention to the fight? That's a mistake you won't live to regret!" Flowey called out as another vine burst from the ground to wrap around his leg.

But this time the vine encountered resistance in the form of Frisk's Aura which desperately shielded its user, glowing as the vine tried to restrict Frisk's leg. Flowey didn't seem to mind this as dozens more pellets, this time the size of baseballs, formed and shot out at his plaything.

With a desperate tug, Frisk freed his leg from the vine using the strength granted to him by his Aura. Only to try and clumsily dodge the fast-moving bullets that were already too close. He only partially succeeded, still getting hit by four of the bullets. They pounded against his aura, which felt ironically like being hit by actual baseballs, as Frisk used to play the sport.

This was accompanied by a dramatic drop in the energy that Frisk was feeling from his SOUL. That meant he couldn't take many more of those kinds of hits. Knowing that he would have to finish this fight soon or else he would run dry. Frisk dashed with all of his Aura-enhanced speed straight at Flowey.

"Woah," Flowey called out as he dug himself under another kick that seemed to be aiming to punt him into the ceiling. Popping back up around 10 feet away, this time he prepared to quip again but was interrupted by the sight of a diving Frisk no more than a foot away from him.

Frisk desperately tried to grab onto Flowey's stem as he crashed into the ground, but was still unable to. Flowey's burrowing into the ground was just too fast for Frisk to have a chance at hitting him. This meant that Frisk's only real chance was to try and run to Toriel, who should be checking this part of the Ruins soon. This would only really buy him time, but his Aura should recover from the reset, so he would be in a better position anyway.

Luckily, he was able to keep his Aura enhancement through the fall, so he jumped back to his feet and made a mad dash for the exit to the starting room. However, just as he was getting close, a vine popped up under his feet, surprising him enough that his Aura slipped through his grasp and he scraped his body as he slid across the floor, ending up right at the exit to the room.

Too fast for him to react, even larger vines slithered around his body from below him. Their larger thorns drove into his SOUL as they dragged him back through the room and back to Flowey.

"Naughty Naughty, you're not supposed to go RUNning away from our FIGHT." Frisk struggled with the vines and the pain while Flowey slowly grew out his stem to come face to-face with Frisk. "Good Job! You certainly gave me some good entertainment. But I'm afraid this is where I take your SOUL! HAHAHAHA!" Frisk's struggles grew as the pain and constriction from the vines grew even worse. Before it surprisingly stopped.

Frisk glanced confusedly at Flowey, who seemed to be thinking deeply about something.

"Ahhhh, actually I've changed my mind," Flowey said, while looking amusedly at Frisk, hanging there at his mercy. "It's been so BORING here in the Underground with this power of mine! Maybe I can get some more entertainment out of you still."

Flowey's face grew into that same terrifying smile, only made worse by the fact that Frisk was at his complete mercy.

"You human, what is your name? Tell me or I'll kill you."

"F-Frisk" Frisk choked out, he really didn't have much of a choice in the matter.

"Hmm, well then Frisk I'll be waiting for you in the next room over. I'm feeling generous, so if you don't come within let's say 2 minutes, I'll come in here and kill you for good. Do I make myself clear?"

"W-Why would you-AHHH!" Frisk tried to choke out but was stopped by a sudden tightening of the vines, causing the thorns to dig in even deeper.

"I Said. DO. I. MAKE. MYSELF. CLEAR!" Flowey growled out.

"Yes!, just please let me go!" Frisk cried out in pain.

"What a terrible creature," Toriel gasped out from the entrance to the room. "Unhand that innocent child, I command you!" She proclaimed while gathering a fireball in her hand. Trying to find an angle where she would not also hit Frisk.

Flowey seemed to look between Frisk and Toriel, contemplating something before he smiled.

"How about no."

*SNAP*

The only thing Frisk felt was the crushing pain and then darkness.
