Chapter 36: A Predator Eyeing His Prey

Day Three…

~~*****~~

After figuring out something, Nathan called his subordinate, the one who was assigned to find out Abigail Scarlett's whereabouts before and after the incident happened in the Centerville Hotel. His subordinate was known by his alias 'Joker.'

"Joker, have you found something?" Nathan asked him with intrigue. Abigail Scarlett remained a mystery to him. She didn't look like an ordinary person.

He had a nagging feeling that Abigail's identity might be more complex than what they've known as of now. And for the first time, after a long time… Nathan got interested again in a woman. (But not in a romantic way!)

"Supreme Leader! I confirmed it. There was no Abigail admitted to the hospital. Her manager and personal assistant are searching for her. I heard that they blocked the news about Abigail's sudden disappearance from the hospital." Joker informed his master.

"The Abigail Scarlet in your care… might be the real Abigail who escaped from the hospital," he added.

Those statements left a frown on his gorgeous face. His forefinger tapped the surface of his table numerous times, thinking about Abigail.

"Go on…" Nathan mumbled, allowing Joker to continue his words.

"I also checked the Centerville Hotel. And I found something suspicious. The CCTV footage on the 13th floor was not functioning. And the hotel management claimed that it was undergoing a maintenance repair."

Creases angled in toward the corner of his eyes and his finger stopped tapping his desk. A glint flashed through his eyes as if he had solved a puzzle once more.

"Because of that, I can't validate if someone entered her room and tried to kill her." Joker sucked a deep breath, feeling disappointed.

"Though you didn't see it with your own eyes, it doesn't mean nothing happened…" Nathan said meaningfully. He didn't know if that statement was for Joker or was it for him.

"What do you mean, Master?" Joker politely asked him.

Nathan stood up, the hint of a self-satisfied smirk playing across his full lips.

"The fact that the CCTV cameras were not functioning on that floor… Everything that happened there was well-planned. Indeed, it's very suspicious. Centerville Hotel is one of the most famous hotels in this city. There is no way their security cameras will suddenly malfunction for a long period of time. Someone wants to hide… a crime here."

Nathan was done analyzing the situation and he ended up with this conjecture. As expected of Nathan's intelligent mind! He concluded that there might be foul play with Abigail's alleged suicide attempt.

Nathan rubbed his chin, the smirk still plastered on his face.

'Abigail Scarlett… who are you? Who did you offend to cause your 'accidental' death?'

"Supreme Leader… this is all I got for now." Joker's voice snapped him back to the present.

"Got it. Just continue to dig more information… and investigate the people who have grudges against Abigail Scarlett. Give me the result. ASAP."

"Understood, Master, "Joker replied before ending the call.

After talking to his subordinate, Nathan grabbed his coat and his car key. He had to see someone.

Upon leaving his study room, Nathan bumped into Abigail and Butler Li who had just entered the house. Automatically, his eyes flicked in her direction, meeting Abigail's gaze.

For a moment, her cheeks burned, conscious of the blue eyes that were all focused on her. 'What the hell? Why is he looking at me like that?' She subconsciously bit her lower lip, looking away.

Even though Butler Li already reassured her that Nathan didn't know that she came into.his chamber that night, Abigail still had this uneasy and nagging feeling.

Meanwhile, Butler Li just smiled foolishly while darting his gaze back and forth between Nathan and Abigail. For some unknown reason, he could see sparks in the way those two glanced at each other.

After surveying her face, Nathan walked past them, as if he didn't see them.

"Master!" Butler Li suddenly called him out, making him stop on his track.

Abigail turned to Butler Li with her round eyes. She had the urge to hit Butler Li for stopping Nathan. The devil was on his way out. Why did he have to call him?

Nathan turned around and asked Butler Li "What?" But his eyes were fixed on Abigail.

"Where are you going, Master? Don't you feel sick anymore?"

Abigail squinted her eyes on this nosy butler while Nathan raised his eyebrow as he shifted his gaze from Abigail to Butler Li.

"Butler Li, do I have to report to you my whereabouts? Are you my wife?" Nathan scowled at his nosy butler.

"Pffft!" Abigail held her laughter. 'Serves you right, Butler Li.'

Butler Li just let out a soft chuckle and said, "I am just passing Miss Abi's message to you. She wants to know if you are feeling good now." Even his word "feeling good" has a connotation.

Abigail's eyes widened in disbelief. What a shameless butler?! Though she was also curious about his current condition She never said those words.

"Oh, Miss Abi, did you hear Master's response? Are you his wife?" Butler Li continued making trouble by teasing those two.

Abigail had the urge to punch Butler Li and rip the silly smile off his face. She glanced at Nathan who had a blank expression on his face. Then she smiled awkwardly and apologized once again for what happened. "I hope you are feeling better now. Just don't mind us."

Without waiting for Nathan's response, Abigail grabbed Butler Li's hand, dragging him away. Nathan just watched their backs until they vanished from his sight.

"Abigail Scarlett… just you wait. I will have to deal with you once I come back." Nathan uttered, with a wicked grin splitting his face.

The way he looked at her was like a predator eyeing his prey. He was going for a hunt soon. Then Nathan turned around, leaving the mansion. He went out to see a very close friend of his. The only person with whom he could open up with his inner thoughts.

Chapter 37: Little Ethan's Secret Mission

Day Three…

~~*****~~

[ Dream Knight Academy… ]

Little Ethan was in a bright mood today as Abigail returned to the mansion together with Nathan. She seemed fine as if nothing bad happened to her. Abigail didn't mention anything about her getting sick after skipping a meal last night.

Axel made sure to apologize to Abigail, asking her not to tell Ethan about his negligence. Of course, she agreed to his request but in exchange, Axel had to fulfill one of her requests in the future.

Abigail started to plant a seed that she would reap someday, using it to her advantage. Now, Butler Li and Axel had favors to fulfill for Abigail. They would be useful to her in the future.

Back to Ethan, the bullies stopped bothering him for now. He attended the class peacefully as the bullies were behaving like angels. But who would have thought that the devil would drop by the school to check on Little Ethan?

Both Teacher Jane and the other students were surprised upon seeing the gorgeous man walking in the hallway. His cold appearance exuded elegance and dignified aura, enough to intimidate anyone but at the same time, capture any woman's attention, including her heart.

Nathan seldom visits his son in school. Old Man Xu was the one accompanying Ethan during school events. Little Ethan understood how busy his father was when it came to work. Unknown to him, aside from managing the company, Nathan was also handling the operation of the Syphiruz Mafia.

"Dad? What are you doing here?" Ethan asked his father with a deep frown as soon as Nathan entered his classroom. The young boy ran in his father's direction.

"Visiting my son," Nathan said matter-of-factly, his hand ruffling Ethan's hair.

"Dad, stop that! Don't make me look like a kid," Ethan complained, pouting his lips.

Nathan let out a short chuckle and said, "You are still a kid!" Ethan just rolled his eyes at Nathan's remarks, crunching his nose.

"Now tell me, where are those bullies?" Nathan transferred his gaze from Ethan to the classroom. His eyes swept around the room, observing Ethan's classmates.

"Dad! Just go home. I'm fine. I can handle them by myself," Ethan moved behind his father, pushing him towards the exit door.

Nathan tapped Ethan's nose, shaking his head in objection. "I'm not going to leave. You let another person confront those bullies, but not your own father?" There was a hint of jealousy in Nathan's voice. He was referring to Abigail as the other person.

Ethan didn't know whether to cry or laugh at his father's words. Meanwhile, Teacher Jane approached Nathan, her face blushing red. She was starstruck by Nathan's handsome features. He was like every woman's dreams–rich, smart, powerful, influential, gorgeous, and hot. He was a complete package! All in one!

"Mr. Sparks… it's good to see you here. Is there anything I can help you with?" Teacher Jane asked him, her lips curling up in a shy smile.

Nathan had already seen this many times. Women would always approach him first, with a goal in mind– catching his attention. Numerous women tried to throw themselves on him, flirt, and seduce him but no one had achieved their goal so far.

Just one sharp glance at him could give them a fright, making them lose their confidence. How much more if he started telling them to fuck off?

Since Ethan was in front of them, Nathan tried his best to be patient with his teacher. But it was crystal clear that she was trying her luck, hoping that Nathan would take notice of her.

"I'm talking to my son. Can you please give us some privacy?" Nathan replied with a stern cold voice.

Teacher Jane was at a loss for words. She didn't expect that Nathan would be so cold and rude towards her. Feeling embarrassed, Teacher Jane immediately turned around, bringing her focus back to her other students.

'Dad is always harsh to women. Fortunately, Miss Abi is not afraid of him. She can tolerate his grumpy and stone-cold behavior.' Ethan thought to himself, smiling cheerfully.

Nathan motioned Ethan to go with him outside. The young boy obediently followed his father. They found a spot at the school ground where they could talk alone.

"Dad, I assure you. Miss Abi already warned the bullies and their parents. They will no longer bother me."

Nathan heaved a deep sigh. "Why didn't you tell me this? Why did you allow them to bully you?"

"Because I don't want to. You already have a full plate, Dad. I don't want to create trouble in school and add a burden to you. I just want to ignore them. But don't worry, Dad. From now on, I will fight back if they dare to bully me again. Miss Abi told me to be strong and fight them head-on!" Little Ethan showed him his small fists, his eyes filled with determination. It seemed that Abigail already inspired him.

Nathan could only smile faintly, stroking the boy's head. "Fine. I will trust you with that."

"Okay, Dad! Do you feel fine now? Is that the only reason you came here?"

"Yes. I'm fine. I was on my way to meet your Uncle Stephen and decided to drop by and check on you."

"Thanks, Dad!" Ethan immediately pounced on him, hugging him.

"For what?" Nathan asked his son in confusion.

Ethan raised his head, flashing his charming smile. "For bringing Miss Abi back. And for not hurting her."

Nathan was taken aback for a moment. He could see the joy in his son's eyes whenever he would talk about Abigail.

"Do you really like her that much?" He asked his son.

Ethan's eyes sparkled in delight and he bobbed his head frantically. "Yes, Dad. I like her so much…"

'For you,' he added in his thought.

Nathan could only smile and shook his head helplessly. "Alright then. I'll give you a secret mission."

Ethan's eyes went round as soon as he heard that. "What mission, Dad?" His voice filled with excitement.

"Get to know her more. … her likes and dislikes… what she is as a person. Know even her little secrets… and tell me about it… Everything about her. Report it to me. Understand?"

Ethan blinked his eyes in both astonishment and puzzlement. "Dad? Are you sure you are really fine? Why do you want to know more about her?" He looked at his father suspiciously.

"Because you said she will become your wife. I need to know more about her for you to get my approval. Otherwise, I will not marry you off to her. I'm your father. You have to get my blessings before you marry her," Nathan said as an alibi.

Ethan: "???"

In truth, Nathan just wanted Ethan's help to investigate Abigail's identity. He thought Abigail would lower her guard when in front of Ethan and she might open up to his cute and charming son. This was only one way to gather more information about her.

"Hmm, Okay Dad! I will do that. I will prove to you that she's the one!" Ethan said confidently, agreeing to his father's plan.

'I will help you see that she's the one for you…'

Both father and son have different motives in mind.
