"Boss! Boss?"
"What's the matter?"
Elias winced, and his eyebrows pulled together and asked her what she wanted from him. He was not happy with his wife. He really felt uncomfortable. Why could she smile, talk in a cheerful and friendly manner with him whenever his parents were beside her? But when they could be alone, she called again and again that he was her boss.
Elias bit his lip and clasped his hands together, interlocking his fingers, so he could do nothing rash. Then, he cracked eggs into a bowl. He stirred in the eggs and seasoned them with salt and pepper.
"Boss, what are you cooking? Let me help." Becky twirled a strand of hair around her finger. She was ashamed to discuss these things with him. "Actually, I don't want to sit tight. It's boring and not convenient for me to see you cook alone."
"Why? Is something wrong?" Elias really did not understand her. His thought was a far cry from her. He had never seen his mother help his father while he was cooking. So, why? Becky was his wife, and he just wanted her to laugh if she liked. He wanted to take care of her, to pet her, to give her everything she wanted, but his heart did not move her. His hand caught hers, to stop her, and lowered his voice, "Don't make trouble, thanks."
Becky smiled awkwardly and drew herself up with her hands in her lap. He thought she was on the point of rebuking him. He was going to apologize for his rudeness, but she said, "I'm sorry. I won't bother you any longer. So, maybe I should go to the garden to talk to your parents."
"Why do you get there?" Elias did not understand what she was thinking about. But at the back of his mind was him not wanting to let her go. He passed her a tray of eggs and offered, "Can you help me crack eggs into the bowl?"
"Oh… Okay."
In fact, Becky did not want to go to the garden. She took the tray off eggs and cracked them into the bowl. Although she was very good at her job, she was bad at cooking. He was cooking the vegetables over a low heat while monitoring his clumsy wife. He was afraid she would make a mess.
After working in the kitchen all day, she felt sweaty. Her singlet soaked with sweat. Finally, she completed assigned tasks. He watched her fumbling efforts with a reluctant smile. The egg shells strewn about the table. What a mess, he thought again. He had a profound sight and looked her straight in the face.
"Okay, well done! Let me clean this up. I'll get it."
Disbelieving what she had heard, she asked again, "Really? Can I go out?"
He nodded in agreement. Then, she smiled cheerfully and informed him, "Then see you later, boss!"
She cleared out before he could catch her.
______________
The meal looked inviting. It was full of slices of roast chicken. Elias knew what his wife liked to eat. So, there were lots of dishes processed from chicken meat, for example chicken simmered with dracontomelum, saute chicken, chicken with bamboo shoot, etc.
Becky enjoyed eating chicken the most. Then, for dinner, she had everything from soup to nuts. Little Becky ate and ate until she became as full as a tick. She loaded her stomach with food. Because she had a full belly, she was too lazy to move. Then she just sat curled up on the sofa, watching the film.
Although she really wanted to sprawl languidly on the sofa and did not need to do anything, she still asked politely to Julia, "Mom, Elias cooked for us tonight, so I should wash the dishes."
"No darling, you don't need to do that. Just leave it to your husband." Julia held out her hand and grabbed her hand. She watched her daughter-in-law with sickness in her heart - though it was a pleasing sickness, if such a thing existed, "You have to look after Elias every day, even in his job. You look thinner than before. You're tired, aren't you?"
"I'm fine, mom." Becky held her hand and tried to comfort her, "It's my duty to do it and I have got used to this lifestyle."
"I don't know what that silly boy is thinking? Obviously, you are the senior partner in the firm. Why can he keep you as a private assistant like that? With your work experience, you can step up to the position of manager." Julia frowned at her impatiently.
"Mom," She denied, "Not as easy as you think. I am unfit for such a senior position."
Julia was dissatisfied. She also did not want to make her awkward. So, she moved to another topic at once.
"Jessica left home yesterday. She said she would join the program that weekend. If you guys came here earlier, we can have a family reunion."
"Is Jess going to be in a film? She is a singer, isn't she?" Elias finished washing the dishes. He came up from behind and suddenly asked.
"Yeah, I know. Even though acting isn't Jess's first choice of vocation, her acting career really took off after she did that film with Paul. She is slowly becoming more famous than before." Julia explained.
"Okay, I see." He directly went to sit next to Becky. He put his hand on the sofa behind her back, and then he asked her in a friendly way, "So, do you want to go to check that film crew with me this weekend?"
"Eh… Oh… Okay." Becky experienced a moment of panic now that she knew her husband really intended to seduce her. It had been a long time since they were hail-well-met. She always suddenly seemed to have lost her mind and forgot the reason they got married. However, she should do wifely duties in front of parents.
"We can go anytime you want, honey." She gazed at his sweet face and leaned her head against his shoulder and sighed happily.
His hand moved from her back to push her against him tighter. He held one of her hands and put his other hand on her shoulder. He could even hear his heart beat so fast and loud, as if louder than the sound of the television. Then, he stole a glance at her out of the corner of his eye, looking at the person who was excitedly talking to his mother. He thought she was really adorable, and then his heart went pit-a-pat again.
Becky always resisted physical intimacy, or even skinship with him. She only accepted to do it when they paid a visit to the Sophronia family and met his parents. Although Elias was in a much better mood than usual, she was a little scared. He wished time would stop at this moment.
____________
"Mom, good night." Elias said.
"Mom, good night and have a sweet dream!" Becky said.
"The same to you, dear!" Julia smiled and kissed her daughter goodnight. "I must get my beauty sleep."
Becky grinned at her as she waved goodbye until Julia went back into her room. Then she stopped smiling. She perceived Elias standing behind her and even heard his breathing. He was there, in the dark, behind her. Her chest felt rather tight, and she did not dare to face him. So, she turned her back on him and drifted silently into the dark. She went upstairs to their room, muttering under her breath as she stalked to the hallway.
The second hallway was black and quiet. She can hear them stepping on the stairs. She gripped the doorknob tightly and quickly opened it, but she did not know how uncomfortable the man behind her was always staring at her.
The sound of the doorknob resounded through the room, separating from the light of the hallway. Their bedroom had not turned on the light yet. Outside, the moon was shining. Moonlight streamed through the window hole and streaks of moonlight came through every crack in that wall. Therefore, she could see their vague silhouettes.
When Elias closed the door, he turned the handle first so the latch would not make noise, and then gave an extra press on the door to be sure he shut it. She thought she could smell danger behind her. Then her face grew pale and her smile faded. She glanced behind her and asked in a trembling voice.
"Sir, do you want to make… love?"
Elias did not reply, hugging her tightly from behind. He went to her and gave her a passionate kiss on her lips. She could feel the warmth of his embrace and his hot breath on her cheek. Although her eyes fast shut while kissing, she was still awkward, like ants creeping in a hot pan. She didn't even know where to put her hands. She didn't dare to lay her hand on his neck, his shoulder, or even his sleeve. She was too nervous to relax her body.
When she put a soft hand on his shoulder, his arms went suddenly around her skirts. He picked up his wife, hugged her tight, and tucked her into their bed. Then he let go of her, ran his fingers through her soft hair, and consoled her awkwardness. Though her hair was tumbling about her shoulders and her bosom heaving breathlessly, his face did not change with surprise or question, or his lips twist with mockery. He just leaned over and his lips brushed against her hair. She was always like that. Whenever he snuggled close up to her, she would be too scared to move. Even though she was as stiff as a poker, he did not have a heart to hurt her.
"Don't cry, baby! I won't hurt you. I'm sorry, but, uh… we'll find the time."
Elias wiped away the tears from her eyes and levered himself out of bed. Then he just sighed and moved away, denying her the tingle of his touch and the heat of his gaze as he paced before her.
"Oh, I understand." She replied when she had caught her breath again.
Although he left the bed without so much as a backward glance, she still gave him an adoring look. Until he entered the bathroom, she was wide awake and put on her clothes again. Then she shaded her eyes with her hand and tears streamed down her cheeks.
She sighed and brushed away her tears.
