Chapter 20: The introduction
Lin Jing began advising the lady and correcting some of her past mistakes. She spent most of that night with the lady who later told her that her name was Ye Shan.
The celebration continued and Lin Jing stood by Shen Yan's side as he blew out the candles of his cake. She felt it was weird for her to do so but he came to call her when the cake arrived and his hand around her waist caged her from escaping.
"Thank you all for celebrating my birthday with me and as you know, it is not a simple birthday party but I want you all to meet my fiancée," he told them afterward and smiled very proudly when his friends gave him a round of applause.
Lin Jing blushed slightly as pulled her closer. "Isn't this a little excessive?" she asked him when it was all over and she could breathe a sigh of relief although his hand was still around her waist.
"No, it is not. I am not the first person to do this. This room is a sacred place for my club," he replied to her and began to narrate. "You should feel like a part of us now. Make yourself very comfortable."
"I am not talking of . . ."
"The show of affection? There is no reason why this is too much. I am not the first person to introduce a spouse. We celebrate our birthdays together no matter how busy any of us are.
"Sometimes, we celebrate a few birthdays at once but my birthday is not close to anyone's birthday so that makes it special. This is the best way to make it public as many people will know about it by tomorrow.
"Each of us knows what we want without having to say it. They know I am trying to make it public by doing all this," he explained to her casually.
Lin Jing nodded but she did not understand how that was possible. There were a few people around who were around with their partners and the public was unaware of their relationship.
They were holding hands and hanging unto each other but why didn't they make it public.
He adjusted her hair with a warm smile that could melt an iceberg. "You don't need to overthink," he corrected her when he noticed her glancing at the girls her sister was sitting with.
"I am not overthinking," she replied returning his smile reflecting the warmth in his eyes. She has tried to get information on this club and its members but this man made it possible for her to be a part of it he deserved more than the warmth she reflected.
"Are you hungry? I have not seen you eat anything since we got here," he told her gesturing to the snacks and drinks.
She shook her head after a few seconds of thoughtful silence. "I am okay," she whispered and swallowed.
"You are hungry or thirsty," he told her firmly. "What do you want me to get for you? You don't look very comfortable."
She nodded and smiled with a pained expression he found very confusing. He frowned.
"Are you okay?" he asked reaching to touch her forehead with the back of his hand.
"No, I am alright," she murmured holding his hand and pulling it from her forehead. "I just want to go to the ladies' room," she muttered. "I could drink something when I return."
He laughed softly. "You should have said that earlier," he chuckled and shook his head with a doting look he was not aware of further softening his eyes. "The restroom is over there," he told her pointing at a door at the other end of the room. "You should tell me next time."
She nodded and walked away. He watched her worriedly until she opened the door and walked in.
"You should have gone with her," he heard a voice he was very familiar with a whisper so close to him he could feel the warmth of the person's breath against his cheeks.
"I have warned you about getting so close to me when you want to speak," he warned his brother who does not ever seem to take his words seriously.
"I am sorry," Mr. Shen apologized to the other Mr. Shen but he wore a mischievous smile that would tell anyone that his apology was very insincere. "You look like you are falling in love," Mr. Shen joked.
"I don't see anything wrong in doing so," Lin Jing's fiancé replied seriously.
Lin Jing's colleague could not believe the words he just heard from his brother's lips. "Are you serious?" he asked and stepped back so he could see his brother properly and not miss any detail.
"Yes, is there any reason I should not fall in love with her? If you have feelings for her, you can stop now, she is now your sister-in-law," Shen Yan joked.
Mr. Shen laughed at his brother's joke but the smile was far from his eyes. He glanced at the door Lin Jing left through and went away to one of his friends.
Shen Yan glanced at his brother's departing back and looked back at that door with his brow furrowed slightly.
"You two are missing out a lot. Your sister has got some serious superpowers I need to steal from her," Ye Miao told the two ladies laughing and talking. They seemed to be too involved in their discussion to hear what she said.
She smiled and shook her head before sipping from the cup of juice she gave her sister. She smiled happily about the thing she seemed to be the only person noticing.
It was fun to watch and made her anticipate what would happen but she was also surprised as well as confused by the power the presence of this new lady in their midst seemed to have on most of the men in the room. It was also very effortless in a way that confused her.
She could not lie that she was impressed and feel intimidated by the beauty of the lady that just left the room. Like a few men, she glanced at the door before moving her attention to the ladies talking beside her.
She had to admit that Ruoruo was equally beautiful but the power her sister had in her beauty was what the young girl missed but her innocence was almost equally captivating.
