Chapter 48: The Interrogation

I was led back to the base as the Rune Knights all looked at me warily. When I got back to base I was led to a stereotypical interrogation room.

A steel table, two chairs, and a bright light. I noticed that there was no one-way mirror, so they must be monitoring me somehow.

I looked around the cell and eventually, when I looked carefully at the walls I noticed there were small carvings on it so thin that I could barely see them.

So this place was probably warded and enchanted, which made sense. I should probably try not to lie in here then, they probably have some way of checking if what I was saying was true or not.

I got caught doing that with the Colonel lying so I wasn't going to make the same mistake twice. I calmed down and began thinking of ways I could twist the truth without actually lying.

After leaving me in the cell with my own thoughts the high-ranking Rune knight walked in. He said, "I'm sorry for the wait but we had to deal with the aftermath of your fight."

"Cleaning up the corpses and clearing out the rubble is not a fun part of being a Rune Knight but it is something that all of us must do. Let me introduce myself I am Barat Volslang, Rune Knight Commander of this area."

Looking at Barat I noticed that he was pretty old with graying hair and a beard. He had scars across his face showing that he had been through a life of battle.

He also seemed to carry a sword with him ornately designed with swirling runes and inlaid gems. I nodded and said, "Yeah having to deal with the clean-up always sucks."

Barat said, "I wouldn't have thought that you would have to have dealt with cleaning up after a fight like this considering your job."

Shit, this was my reputation coming back to bite me. I must have been a bigshot if he feels that he should mention it.

I replied, "Truthfully I haven't had to deal with cleaning up much. Often subordinates or the higher-ups tend to deal with it or usually, the higher-ups didn't want any cleaning up to be done at all.."

He said, "Yes the higher-ups. Do they have any reason, in particular, to send the Void Snatchers Team to capture you? That is a pretty prominent name after all."

I chuckled and said, "For what other reason I snitched on them. They don't need a greater reason than that to drag me back and make an example of me."

He said, "Well Marcus, while that may be true, I just find it odd that all the traitors to the Balam Alliance were killed immediately but you were the only one they wanted to capture."

"The Void Snatcher were famous for their ability to take even S-rank mages back to the Balam Alliance alive."

I said, "I honestly don't know other than my ability to fight I'm nothing special."

Barat said, "Yes, speaking of your ability to fight, it is honestly surprising that you managed to take down that group so easily. They were all strong A-rank mages that had taken down S-ranks mages."

I said, "I wouldn't go so far as to say it was easy. There were multiple times they got a hit-in. Especially that last attack, it could've killed me."

He nodded, "Yes forbidden magic, not a nice thing that. It just surprises me even more than that you could survive it relatively unscathed."

"On our way back I had one of our mages scan you discreetly and he said that you had absolutely no wounds on you."

Damn that healing potion had gotten rid of all of my wounds. Now they thought I was a much more massive threat than I actually was, it probably conflicted against the previous information they had on me.

Healing magic was also lost magic here so I can't say that I got a healing potion. I bent the truth a little and said, "Well luckily I've got a great weapon on me that allowed me to block it."

He raised his eyebrow, "Truly, I thought we had checked you to see if you had Requip magic and you didn't. How did you manage to get it."

I said, "Well this isn't Requip magic. It's what I call my inventory, similar but different in principle."

Barat nodded, "May I see the weapon?"

I drew the O Wazamono from my inventory and showed it to him.

He said, "Truly magnificent. I haven't seen craftsmanship on this level for years. It is surprising that it has no enchantments on it."

I said, "It doesn't really need it."

He nodded, "Yes, it probably doesn't. How did you acquire it?"

I replied, "Got it off a pirate. They stole it from somewhere I decided that it belonged in better hands."

He looked surprised, "A pirate. My, my, that sounds like an interesting story. You should tell me about it sometime. So you don't know why they want to capture you?"

I nodded, "Not a single clue."

He looked at the runes around the walls and said, "You have not lied a single time while in this room so I guess I shall let you go."

"I have to ask however considering the power and skills you have shown, would you like to join the Rune Knights? With your abilities, you would quickly be able to rise up the ranks."

I was surprised by the offer but I guess I shouldn't have been. They wanted to keep an eye on me and having me close was better than letting me go and wander around.

Seeing my power they also probably wanted to send on the more dangerous missions that they didn't want sending more loyal and powerful mages on.

Was I fine with this? I did want more fight to force myself to improve and the Rune Knights were a powerful organization.

Unlike the guilds, they did actually have military order, so I would be able to learn proper tactics and strategy here unlike if I went to the Fairy Tail guild.

They were also pretty close to the magic council and would definitely help if I wanted to become a Wizard Saint. I know that pure power was not the only requirement.

You had to have some political pull to get there and considering my background I was already starting way behind. If I wanted to get this done then joining the Rune Knights was a great choice.

If I served well and with honor I think most people would forgive my past deeds, whatever they were. So I said, "I would like to join."

Barat looked surprised then he smiled widely, "That's great. Let us get things sorted out for you as soon as possible."

He walked out of the room motioning me to follow. He said, "You know I honestly didn't expect you to join. It's good though we need more powerful mages in our ranks."

I said, "I just want to do good and repent for my past actions."

He nodded, "You said that before and I didn't believe you. The Maniac Marcus Fulbright was a pretty infamous name after all. But now I think there might just be some hope for you yet."

We were rushed down to an office where I saw a lot of people writing pieces of paper and filing things away.

He looked around and yelled to one of the scribes, "Hey Peter get over here. We've got a new recruit get some registration papers."

A small, thin, brown-haired, young man quickly scurried over. "Yes, Knight Commander Barat. I've got the papers right here."

I looked at it and started to write my personal information down. Name: Marcus Fulbright, Age: 17 years old, Birthday: March 24, Height: 183 cm, etc.

I was honestly surprised that everything had the same metrics because if not then I would definitely not have the ability to answer any of these questions.

Then it came to magic. I wrote Wind Dragon Slayer Magic. Barat who was standing behind me jerked a bit and asked, "Wind Dragon Slayer Magic?"

"That's a lost magic and a pretty powerful one at that where did you learn it?"

I froze. I knew I had to tell him my magic or else they would find out later when I was working with them but I hoped that he would ignore it. But I had a lie prepared ahead of time.

I replied, "Yeah I just got it recently so I'm not that good."

He said, "That's not a skill that you just learn, did one of the Dark Guilds gain a cash of Lacrima that allows them to give away dragonslayer magic?"

Good thing I remembered that Laxus got his dragon slayer magic from a Lacrima his father gave him. His father, who was a Dark Mage in the Raven Tail guild.

I said, "I think that the Raven Tail guild has a few more dragonslayer Lacrimas in storage."

He said, "Raven Tail huh? I will keep that name in mind."

I managed to get through the rest of the page pretty easily. Putting down Inventory magic, Armament Magic, Observation Magic, and Conquerer's Magic.

He didn't seem to comment on the names I gave to my Haki so I assumed that they were not that remarkable or he didn't care enough to ask about it

Once I was done I was now finally an official member of the Rune Knights, I was ready to begin my journey to become a Wizard Saint.
