His feet found a solid footing sooner than he had expected to. 

The path downwards was a spiral staircase that curved to the left, encased in a tight cylinder. The whole thing was reminiscent of a staircase in an old medieval castle, with tight walls and the overall shape of the staircase that would have been purposely designed that way.

Given the form of the Firstborn, Gus could not help but think that it was odd that their temples had an entire section hidden below them that was only accessible via stairs, meaning that they were unable to actually get down there. For something that seemed so well designed from the outside that it was able to survive against time itself, it seemed like a rather sloppy oversight from the creators.
