Chapter 66: 66 Slipping Into the Darkness

A familiar older man stood in front of the building where Adam had an apartment. Niedziałek was pacing in place apparently waiting for something or someone. At the sight of him, Lechoń felt a stab in his heart. What should he say to his superior and mentor?

Adam got out of the cab. Although he didn't want to face Niedziałek, he couldn't avoid him. Niedziałek had taken up his cause. He even sent Joanna to get him out of jail.

Lechoń stood in front of his boss with his head hanging down. He did not dare to look him in the eye.

The elderly lawyer came up to him and hugged him tightly, fatherly. He held him for a long moment, and when he pulled him away at arm's length, he looked carefully at his neck, where even in the artificial light of the lantern the welts from the hands were clearly visible.

“How could this have happened, boy? Why did you struggle with this alone?”

Adam looked away. What was he supposed to say? He really couldn't think of anything.
