Chapter 11: Chapter 11: The Hero

Heldon’s saber sliced through Ryce’s side, sizzling smoke spewing from the wound due to the holy water. Immediately after a near bone crunching blow struck his shield, sending Heldon tumbling backwards.

Heldon’s left arm throbbed from the direct impact of Ryce’s broadsword and he didn’t know how the shield remained intact.

“I’ve never seen a human with such a death wish.” The first vampire said, more curious than angry. He advanced toward Heldon, eyes red with bloodlust.

“He’s mine.” Ryce’s deep voice shook tree branches and Heldon took a defensive stance.

Ryce swung vertically down and Heldon barely had time to duck and roll before the third vampire awoke from his magical trance and sliced down at Heldon.

Heldon parried, but the saber twisted from his grip and skittered across the grass.

His wrist stung as he grabbed the crucifix from his belt and held it out over his shield in a feeble attempt to get some distance between him and the two attacking vampires.
