Chapter 2: Forest

[ I'm not even looking behind me. But it feels like, I don't even have the time to do so. ]

I turn my head down while my mouth unconsciously moves and says, [ Light Attribute— ]

[ You can't do that yet, Chiaro-kun. ]

[ Dark Attribute: Interdimensional Void. ]

After that chant, a symbol appeared on my left eye that was partially blocking my vision but it was not enough to distract me from my surroundings. That symbol has the letter "X" with "—" striking through it. While my right eye remains the same.

[ Fulgurating Light. ]

A black spiral manifested behind me, sucking the silver daggers in.

[ What did I just say? Light Attribute? And what's this symbol in my eye? ]

[ Chiaro-kun, you can't defeat that guy yet. ]

[ You were the one who did that, right? Dark Attribute? ]

[ Yep, you are such a helpless boy. ]

[ If I can't defeat him, what should I do? ]

[ The one thing you are good at, running. ]

[ There's no way I could run from— ]

[ Here look at him, he's still processing what happened. If you start running now you might make it. ]

The guy's face gives no expression but I can see that he is currently in deep thought.

[ That little stranger, who is he? Light and Dark, does he have two attributes? No, that can't be, the light ability he chanted didn't even work. But, it's troubling that I heard two voices in one body— ]

The guy snapped back to reality and saw nothing but an empty grassland in the middle of the night sky.

[ Ah ha, he ran away. ]

The guy's eyes come back to normal and turns his back—

[ I don't want to do this, but I should ask my older sister to do something. ]

And start walking in the opposite direction from where I am going.

I kept running until I found a forest to hide in, and then decided to rest beside a tree.

[ Hey, you are there, right? ]

[ Interesting, looks like you figured out how to call me, Chiaro-kun. ]

[ I just have to think like I am talking to you. ]

[ Yep, you are right. So need something? ]

[ What is an attribute? ]

[ Oh, that one. It's the power of an entity that is not human. ]

[ That's it? ]

[ That's it. ]

[ Then why did the attribute I said earlier didn't work? Am I a human—? ]

[ No you are not silly. Your body can't handle your essence yet. ]

[ Essence? ]

[ It's hard to be with someone who knows nothing. Essence is needed to activate your attribute; your ability's power will depend on the amount of essence you have. ]

[ Then how can I- ]

[ Most importantly, haven't you noticed it yet? ]

[ …, I already did, that's why I am asking you what an attribute is so that I could help myself. ]

As soon as I stepped inside the forest, the leaves, the roots, the trees, the birds, everything felt like an eye staring at every step I took.

[ I see, then get out of here as soon as possible— is what I like to say, but looks like we are too late. ]

[ Should we fight? Or run away? ]

[ Well who knows- ]

After a moment, the sound of the grass being stepped on reach my ears—

[ What should I do? Run? ]

I glanced back at the place where I once encountered that guy with a silver attribute—

[ But, what if he's still there? This time, running might not be an option- ]

The sound of the grass being stepped on is closing in— and eventually, a girl in a black cloak appears.

[ Tsk! Are you one of them too!? ]

[ One of them—? ]

The girl suddenly—

[ Water Attribute: Sword ]

She summoned a blue sword in her hand and began rushing towards me while screaming.

[ Hey- ]

Her attacks weren't as swift as the one with the silver attribute

[ This girl. She's wielding her sword randomly. ]

I said while dodging all her attacks with ease.

[ Hey tell me, is there something wrong? ]

[ Huh!? ]

While she's attacking me continuously, I started to—

[ 238, 239, 240, 241— ]

[ Hey what are you counting—? ]

The moment she slashes her sword again, I take her right hand using my left—

[ You've been wielding your sword 246 times, yet you haven't touched me once, do you know why? ]

With a shallow voice, she asked [ Why? ] as her eyes enlarge.

[ Because, you're panicking. ]

and then pull her towards me and chop her nape.

[ Please don't k-kill me— ] she pleaded as her body began to fall.

[ Have a nice rest, don't worry, I am here to protect you. ]

After that, she loses consciousness.

[ Hmmm? Chiaro-kun, what are you planning to do? ]

[ Haven't you noticed it? ]

[ Notice what? ]

[ Her hands were trembling as they did their best to wield a sword. She is making a scared face. And she was panting as if she's running for a whole day. ]

[ That means? ]

[ I thought you know everything, it means, she's in danger. ]

[ Are you perhaps planning to help her? ]

[ I can't just leave her in this mysterious forest, right? ]

I put my left hand below her legs and my right hand at her nape, and then, stood up.

[ I'll be leaving this forest with her. ]

[ You shouldn't stick your nose on other avatars' business— is what I'd like to say, but with that kind of face you're making, it looks like it won't do anything. ]

And I began to run away in one direction until we were no longer in that forest.

Somewhere around the kingdom. A place where houses and different kinds of stalls are joined together, this may seem like a normal town but— one of the buildings here is not the same as the other. That building looks like your usual one-story house, but inside it lies a tunnel underground where avatars who have access there can see/feel/hear those who pass the forest. And that forest where we were once in, the forest where we feel like we're being watched is called— The Trackers Zone.

Inside that place, there's a locked room with a sign saying—

"Military Branch: Office of the Head of Information."

Inside that room that has no lights, lies a guy who has been staring at a miniature of the whole kingdom for a while.

[ Hmm, I see. A foreigner and the princess exiting the tracker zone to Crezesia District. ]

His glasses lights up and—

[ Tracker Attribute: Contact Tracer. ]
