Chapter 1: [I think, therefore I am]

A light breeze blew through the green grassy plains of a lonely island on an even lonelier blue planet. The grass blades danced in the wind, butterflies and insects jigged and moved in and above the tall silage. Flowers of various yet simple colours basked in the warm rays of the sun that rested high above the land.

There was nought a single being in sight for miles, until the view shifted to a massive stone structure. The shape was reminiscent of a clamshell, with half of it missing. It featured many large rectangular holes, presumably windows, cavernous hallways and many, many rooms on the inside. In front of the building itself was a large, rectangular pond of saltwater where many jellyfish could be seen leisurely swimming under the water.

But, it is not here where our story begins. Just off to the left side of the school, a five-minute walk away perhaps was a large, beautiful garden of many types of flowers. The garden was arranged almost chaotically, yet, a skilled eye could see that love and care went into taking care of the flowers growing there. The garden appeared to be divided into two sections, one where flowers bloomed seemingly randomly, and one where there was a lot of the same type and colour of flowers arranged into circular shapes around small stone pillars. The pillars themselves were not tall but were not small either. They were roughly 2 metres in height and around 80 centimetres in width. Some of the flowers in the garden seemed to take a special liking to these tablets, as they were growing around them, encasing them in beautiful green stems and blooming flower buds.

Red roses, yellow pansies, calla lilies, red poppies, bluebells, pink azaleas, pink chrysanthemum, and many, many more types of flowers were blooming around these specifically arranged structures. They numbered fifteen in total, and on each and every stone was carved a name.

Heliodor, Green Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire, Pink Topaz, Pink Fluorite, Lapis Lazuli, Topaz, Chrysoberyl, Blue Zoisite, Aquamarine, Apophyllite, Fluorite, Sphalerite, and finally, Red Diamond. The final stone also appeared to be the oldest, having many red roses growing around the stone pillar, covering it in a beautiful menagerie of red and green.

Here, in this beautiful garden, a figure could be seen. Seemingly human in appearance, yet far from organic. The figure appeared to be male, clad in a peculiar black suit. He appeared to be wearing a loose, black vest over a white button-up t-shirt coupled with a black tie. Black (presumably) jeans reached just the mid-point of his ankles where brown leather dress-shoes covered the man's bare feet. The man appeared almost human, was it not for his strange, extremely pale complexion and skin that wasn't really there. The skin was more like a layer of powder or some kind of resin. Most notable was the man's hair. It was... strange, to say the least. It had the appearance of a white, semi-reflective and sometimes semi-transparent crystal, yet looked as soft as fabric to the touch. It was dishevelled, unkempt, but... mesmerising to look at. The man's stature was lean, but his figure still managed to have broad shoulders while being relatively short, standing at around 155 centimetres.

The male's name was Moissanite, but he prefered to just be called "Nite", for short. It once amused the male, his nickname sounded like the word "night", yet his hair was brighter than the moon when the light shined on it. Moissanite is a tough, hard gemstone, having a hardness of 9.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness, just 0.5 less than that of a diamond. A gemstone born from the stars, as one person liked to constantly remind the man.

That's correct. Nite... is not a human. He's an inorganic, yet still fundamentally "human" existence, born from once inanimate mineral Moissanite. How he was given life, he does not know. He only knows how to take care of flowers... among other things that he has long since left behind...

Nite appeared to be at peace, lightly smiling. But, his eyes would occasionally drift towards one of the few blooming graves. Specifically, the one overgrown with red roses. Nite's eyes would shift towards it almost rhythmically, every couple of minutes or so as he inspect and took care of his flowers. His peaceful smile would falter ever-so-slightly when he did, the name Red Diamond bringing him nostalgic, yet often painful memories he wished he could forget.

A sigh escaped from his mouth, "Me and my stubborn heart..."

He mused under his breath, almost chuckling at his own amusement before returning to his self-appointed duties. The Garden of Memories, as he named it, is a place where those that are no longer with them won't be forgotten. A bittersweet reminder of what once was, hidden behind the beautiful veil of a colourful environment.

Hah, it has been such a long time since he had planted his first flower here, but, the pleasant feeling never faded away. As long as the flowers didn't have to be planted around stone monoliths, that is... But, taking care of this garden was the only escape from reality that Nite had. It was sad, especially for a being like him that does not age. He didn't want to remember how many decades, or even centuries he had spent taking care of flowers.

But enough about that, bad memories only get worse with time and constant reminders. Nite carried a large wooden bucket in his hand, in that bucket was a wooden watering can, a wooden gardening fork, a small wooden shovel, a towel and a pair of obsidian scissors. Nite scarcely needed all of this equipment, but he still carried them around, a force of habit if you will. His hands were already more than skilled in taking care of plants, so most of his equipment was just added baggage.

Nite's peace and lonely serenity lasted for all of five minutes before he spotted two figures running as fast as the win from another direction. Both even from a greater distance were distinctly females, even if they had flat breasts. Unlike Nite, they appeared to be both wearing largely similar clothes with minor differences. Extremely short pants that were black in colour and left their surprisingly shapely legs on full display. One of them wore white stockings and high gloves, while the other wore the same thing but the polar opposite when it came to colour. Honestly, this was the most dynamic duo Nite ever had the pleasure of knowing.

"Oh, Dia, Bort, this is a surprise..." idly muttered Nite as he patiently waited for them to quickly whizz past him, he noticed that Diamond, nicknamed Dia, was lacking behind her partner.

Diamond was, in every sense of the word, dazzling beauty with hair similar to Moissanite's, except a lot more... girly, it also reflected a myriad of beautiful colours every time the sun's sheen reflected off it. She was a treasure, both literally and metaphorically. Dia had one of the most pleasant personalities out of everyone, and quite frankly, Nite had a bit of favouritism going towards her.

Bort, on the other hand, was the polar opposite. Where Dia was nice and kind-hearted, Bort was crude, mean and unforgiving. She definitely had her charms, but her constant battle mania certainly made her peers warier of her. But, as fate would have it, Bort was something akin to a peace symbol, because she... was really, really strong. The strongest fighter Nite knew in fact!

His musings didn't last long as Bort pretty much just passed by him without saying anything. Her smooth, long black hair blew in the wind as she rushed head-first towards danger. Nite couldn't stop a sigh from escaping, he was old, very, old. The second eldest, actually! So he couldn't help but feel a little nostalgic for the way Bort handled things.

"Always so eager to battle that one is..." came Nite's deep and amused tone of voice.

"Nite!" his small serene smile widened slightly as he turned back towards the other beauty approaching him, poor Diamond had been completely left behind by Bort.

"Oh, hello there," kindly greeted the male, the second of the two males currently on the island, "Busy day we're having?"

"Yeah, there's a sunspot spotted towards the south so I and Bort were heading there... but as you can see... I got left behind again," Nite couldn't help but give Dia's dejected look a sympathetic smile, poor girl.

"Doing your best is what counts, even if you can't do it as well as someone else. The fact that you're willing to try and compete is more than enough," Nite's words of encouragement seemed to lift Dia's spirits just a little bit, evident by her smile, "Let's scurry along now, don't want to be late to the party, do we?"

Dia nodded, this time her features were filled with much more confidence, "Yes!"

And so, the two ran at an equal pace towards the direction of the supposed sunspot.

Sunspots aren't natural phenomena. They appear in the sky, seemingly anywhere at any given time, but only during the day and only on sunny days. These black spots can take a plethora of shapes, but it is not the sunspot itself that concerns everyone. It is what comes from beyond the pitch-black veil.

Lunarians. Sometimes called the moon people, are inorganic, strangely soft and almost cloud-like beings that come from the moon down to Earth via sunspots to collect and abduct Lustrous. For what reasons is a mystery, however, a popular theory is that they either turn the captured Gems into jewellery or into weapons. They mostly resembled the Lustrous, but their entire bodies were of only one colour, and that was slightly bleached yellow. They came in various shapes and sizes, but most commonly looked human enough to have consistency.

As Nite and Dia ran, soon, more and more of their kind joined them. Each and every single one was beautiful in their own right, and all of them had bright, reflective hair. They also all wore the same outfit with very few modifications. Nite stood out like a sore thumb among them, but that was also mostly because he was also the only male in the expanding group.

That was, until two figures came into view, slowly marching in the same direction. One was a peppermint-haired girl, much shorter than the other figure who was a tall, almost huge bald man dressed in Buddhist robes.

The peppermint-haired female was named Phosphophyllite, a klutz with a kind but childish heart. Nite quite liked her, he often saw her dozing off in the tall grass or sometimes even coming near his garden to relax. Such a nice girl, it was just too bad she was really bad at everything.

The male was named Kongo, but everyone always called him either Sensei or Kongo-sensei. He was the only other male on the island at this moment and was the strongest out of everyone. With a mere breath, he could create strong wind, with a mere step he could crack the strongest of materials.

Bright yellow light soon came into view as a group of humanoid figures was seen collecting various shards and body pieces of two other Lustrous. One was a pink-haired girl with a pretty wild hairstyle, she was Morganite. The other was a much more timid but reserved girl with short and swept white hair, this was Goshenite. Nite didn't often meet them, but they were a pretty pleasant company, Goshenite especially since she wasn't so brash.

Pretty much every Lustrous had come to heed their Sensei's call, but as Nite looked around and greeted some of his peers, he noticed one missing. He felt a little bad that she wasn't here, the poor girl was always so lonely... But these thoughts can be addressed later. Now, he must keep his head in the game.

Fortunately, it would seem his days of peace would not be over just yet. With but a mere snap of his fingers, Kongo-sensei destroyed all of the Lunarians at the same time, their very bodies turning to yellow smoke before dissipating.

"Well... that's that... Why did we all rush here anyway?" idly muttered Moissanite under his breath, he was confused as to what actually prompted him to rush here, he didn't have a weapon to use, wasn't doing patrol anymore and literally, everyone else was here.

Nobody replied to him, but he rose an eyebrow as Kongo-sensei's next words, "Looking out for your elders... huh?"

Only then did it dawn on Nite's mind what Kongo-sensei was about to do, but one of his peers, a green-haired Jadeite warned everyone faster than he could, "EVERYONE! GET BACK!"

And everyone did, minus Nite and Phosphophyllite who was by his side. Nite was all but used to Kongo-sensei's... punishments and bursts of anger, not that they were unjustified. Still, he just stood there and waited for it...

"IT'S WAY TOO EARLY! YOU FOOLS!"

A powerful burst of wind and sound followed, a sound so loud that it slightly rattled Nite's body, but overall left him unharmed. Unfortunately, Phosphophyllite, which was by Kongo-sensei's side and was much more brittle and soft, having a Mohs hardness of only 3.5, was immediately shattered into pieces, leaving only her torso and head intact.

"Oh dear," Kongo-sensei immediately realised his mistake and adjusted his white gloves, ready to start picking up pieces of Phosphophyllite's body to put her back together.

"As brittle as always, huh?" amusedly asked Nite as he crouched down to help collect all of Phosphophyllite's pieces while the rest of the Lustrous quickly came over to help not just Phos, but also Morga and Goshen who needed to be put back together as well.

"Gee, wonder what gave it away?" pouted back the mint-haired gal after she heard Nite's snarky remark.

"You have a hardness level of only 3.5, someone simply brushing against you is enough to break you," Kongo-sensei spoke as he and Nite moved Phosphophyllite's prone body to a bag made of fabric, "What's more, you are a peppermint colour the Lunarians adore. Not to mention completely untalented."

"Oi!"

"At first, I was at a loss. But, I've decided that you... should help compile our encyclopedia."
