Chapter 44: Chapter 44

Trust is supposed to be earned.

Not because I will let them in, means I won't watch them.

I have serious trust issues but maybe because I have been friends with Piper for so long who studies psychology, I end up learning some basic ways to look more into people's minds. It actually helps, though I am still being skeptical most times.

"Leo? Okay, can you bring him to me? I'll just go to Mr. Brown for a minute but I would like to meet Leo when I come back. Also, inform the chairman that I'll have Leo trained so he'll be the one reporting to me while I'm in Korea" I instructed Ava then I went to look for Mr. Brown. I will see later whether I can keep him or just take him as a temporary assistant.

It took quite a moment before Mr. Brown finished some preparations for the project that is necessary for me to bring. I also went to the HR department to check on Leo's working etiquette.

When I came back to my office, Leo is already there waiting for me. "Hi Ms. Addison, it's a pleasure to meet you" Leo greeted. He is a bit older than me, and looks mature and hardworking, but does he look timider than Ava? No wonder other employees trample on them regardless of their capabilities.

"Pleasure to meet you too, sit down"

Thereupon, I explained to him in detail why I asked Ava to bring him to me. "What do you think?" I asked him.

His eyes are full of disbelief. Who wouldn't? Nobody wanted him when he first came, and now the Vice President and heir of the company is willing to take him as an assistant? Offcourse he would doubt his ears.

"Ma'am, do you think I'll be suitable for that position?" he hesitantly asked. I shrugged and said, "Why not? On the way here I already checked your profile. Your grades were outstanding, I heard you're doing a great job on your assigned tasks as well and that you have a nice personality. The only problem here was that you're too old to be just starting your career. But who cares? I don't need someone young, atleast you're much more mature than other personnel I guess. We all have different timelines.

And experience will only be earned once you start, it doesn't matter if you don't have the background yet as long as you can learn fast. So, are you?"

I can see that he still thinks he doesn't deserve it or maybe he thinks that my dad won't approve so I comforted him by saying, "Don't worry, even though I already asked Ava to report this to my dad, I'll still talk to him about this and give him my reasons. I'm sure I can convince him based on your previous performance." He breathed a sigh of relief and said "Thank you for the opportunity ma'am, I won't disappoint you" Is this opportunity given enough to make him loyal to me? For now, let's try.

"Good then, you can start your training with Ava tomorrow. Now, go pack your things from your previous department and I'll ask someone to clean up the desk beside Ava's. You can have the remaining hours to take a rest at home so you'll have energy for the next few days. I am giving you time now to yourself so I expect you won't slack when you start?"

"Don't worry Ms. Addie, I won't disappoint you. I will never forget this opportunity that you bestowed and will always work hard for you." I smiled at him and dismissed him. I really hope he'll do what he said.

At the manor, I asked aunt Sally if dad is already home so I can discuss with him the matter about Leo. "Oh sweetie, he's actually waiting for you in his study room." aunt Sally said. "Thanks, aunty, I'll go ahead then" I answered. "Okay, have you eaten dinner? I'll go prepare some for you" She offered.

"Thanks, aunty, I'm actually quite hungry but I have to talk to dad first," I said and then I went to dad's study room.

After knocking, I heard him say I can enter and so I did.

"Can you explain to me why you choose someone from the PR department as your assistant?" He asked as soon as I entered.

"Dad I already checked on it, he's not suited there and the only reason he got rejected in other departments was that he's too old to be a newbie. Do you wanna waste such talent? Also, Ava referred him to me so I asked a few in the PR department to tell me about how he works and he's actually good. In addition, his profile is actually outstanding. I don't mind having someone mature to assist me with my work and I already asked Ava to train him starting tomorrow" I explained to my dad.

"You really have your way with words, I just hope you'll use your talent to improve our company and not on something as useless as your brother," he said and waved me off. I just smiled halfheartedly and left his study room.

Stepping outside, I can finally smell the fragrance of some meals being prepared in the kitchen so I immediately went there to eat.

"Just wait on the dining table sweetie, I'll be done soon," aunt Sally said but I don't wanna sit alone at that big table so I said "I'll just eat here at the counter aunty, and you can also join me"

As someone who brought me up, she immediately understood what I meant so she just smiled and continued cooking. She then served the delicious food and accompanied me to eat.

It is true that I am used to being alone, but the dining table is just too much for me. That long table where most times you have to eat on your own, lots of dishes being served but your appetite just won't kick in. Other times when my parents are home to eat with me are not any better, the atmosphere would just make you choke on your food and rather not continue eating.
