Chapter 14: HOW WE MET 2

"Everything is different!" She exclaimed as she stepped off the bus.

"Yes, many beautiful buildings have been built," Eric said as he took her hands in his.

"We need to hold on to each other's hands because it's easy to get lost and pickpocket here. You should hold on to your bag; I can't stand it if you get pick-pocketed; your wailing is bothersome,"

"I can take care of myself and my tears aren't annoying," Jane scowled as she yanked her hand from his grip.

"I know, I know, I'm sorry for saying that, but we don't have time," He took her hand once more.

"I'd like to purchase a rosary." Her face lit up with a smile as she clung to his arm.

"You're lying! What do you truly want?" He gave her a sneer.

"Of course, a big teddy bear!" She burst out laughing.

"I'm hoping there will be something left after we buy the groceries," Eric speculated.

"Nah!! "I brought my own money," Jane teased.

"Alright, first we should go to the tomato sec...". He felt her arm leave his arm as he spoke.

"For the love of God, don't let go of my hand," He frowned. When he turned around, he saw her running after someone.

"Why are you running? He yelled.

"Shit! It's not what I planned," he thought as he caressed his long silky hair and began to run after them.

.....

Jane felt her purse leave her as Eric spoke; she turned around, and a guy was running with it; she hurried after him, leaving Eric behind.

"Hey, come back!" She yelled at the man who was running. The guy was faster than her, and she was tired.

She was about to run into the small lane where the guy had run when she was grabbed by a hand.

"Let me go, he'll go a long way at this rate," she grumbled.

"Let's just say he was already faster than you. What exactly was in the bag?" Eric, gasping for air, inquired.

"The money I set aside for the teddy bear and...," she paused.

"And then what?" Eric was growing impatient.

They didn't have enough time and had to leave for the orphanage before 9 p.m.

"I took Sarah's camera from her bed," she grumbled.

"You stole instead," he pointed out.

"If they ask, just say you lost it on the way," Eric held her hand again.

"Are you going to do that?" Jane's eyes twinkled with hope as she asked him.

"Of course, you're already in a lot of trouble," he replied as they returned to get the groceries.

They walked to the bus stop after finishing their grocery shopping.

"Are you crying?" Eric asked, staring at Jane, who was frowning.

"Why won't I cry? You didn't get my teddy bear, and I didn't get to take any pictures despite working so hard to get that camera," Jane exclaimed.

"Technically, you stole the camera and misplaced your bag," he joked.

"You're bothering me, the bus is already here, let's go," she said.

"All right, your hand," Eric said as he took her hand in his.

"You do realize I'm not a baby?" She grumbled as they boarded the bus.

"Well, I didn't misplace my bag, did I?" He teased.

"Stop teasing me, I'm already irritated,"

_______

Sister Maria waited for them at the gate; if it had just been Eric, she wouldn't have bothered, but it was Jane! What if she goes looking for trouble?

"Phew, they're back," she exclaimed as she saw them from a distance.

"What took you so long?" she inquired as they approached her.

"The train was late, and the market had already closed," Eric explained.

"You should leave earlier next time," she advised, turning to face Jane. "I hope you didn't cause too much trouble,"

"No, Sister," Jane muttered as she bowed her head.

"OK, you should go eat your dinner; I wanted to tell you earlier that you shouldn't bother, but Ferdinand distracted me," Sister Maria left them and entered the orphanage.

"Thank you," Jane whispered.

"I'm hoping Sarah doesn't notice her camera is missing," Eric replied quietly.

"I'm hungry," she grumbled.

"You said that earlier, but you were awestruck by the market, so I guess the beautiful, bustling market fed you." He teased once more.

"I told you to stop teasing me," Jane slapped him on the butt.

Eric laughed and dashed off to the dining hall, with Jane running after him.

Eric rolled onto his bed and slowly opened his eyes, using his hand to search for the torch on his bed because it was dark. He could hear the door creak open slightly.

"Wake up, wake up, wake up," With urgency, a hand tapped him on the shoulder.

"What?" He mumbled, convinced that he was dreaming.

"Hey, Eric, get up."

It was Jane's voice that became clearer. He sat up quickly and gripped her hand tightly.

"What occurred? What time is it? "What are you doing waking me up?" He inquired whispering.

"Come on, let me show you something," she said quietly.

His hand eventually came across the torch. He jumped down from the bunk bed quietly.

"What happened?" He dragged her out of the room, whispering.

"Follow me," she said as she began to walk out of the dorm.

"Slowly and quietly," she said, turning to face Eric, whose footsteps were audible.

"Do I need to flash the light?" he inquired.

"No, don't you know how to get out even when there's no light?"

"I hope this is a dream," Eric prayed because Jane had promised to wait until she was 18 before fleeing, so he didn't understand what was going on.

As they approached the gate, Eric let go of her hand, certain that it was not a joke.

"What are you up to?" He inquired, lighting the torch.

"Please turn off the light," She yanked the torch from his grasp and turned it off.

"And you'll wake up Mr. Luke," she added.

"OK, I'm calm; what are your plans?" He inquired while standing Akimbo.

"I'm leaving; are you coming with me?" She took his hand again.

Eric locked his gaze on the face, aided by the moonlight that shone brightly.

"Is it the test?" he wondered.

How will he leave this safe haven because of his best friend?

"Time is running out, respond!" She'd already begun climbing the gate.

"Wait for me," he said as he joined her in climbing the gate.

They began running toward the bushes as they descended from the gate.

"Wait "Are you sure Mr. Luke was at the gate?" Jane inquired as they entered the bush.

"No, he's on leave tonight because of his child's birthday," Eric replied, flashing his torchlight on the ground.

"But why are we following the bushes when there is a road?" he added asking.

"I discovered a small store in the woods," she explained.

"Did you go outside?" Eric was taken aback.

"Yes, a few days ago, but I didn't take the bus; I just walked here," she explained.

"My God, Jane, you've come a long way."

"This is where we are," she said, pointing to a small warehouse.

"Is it accessible?" Eric went to the warehouse and attempted to open it. The door swung open.

"Let us rest here for the night and look for a way to live tomorrow. Don't worry, I'll look after us." She sat on the hay that had been placed there.

"I'm not going along with this plan," Eric sighed.

"Why did you then follow me out here?" Jane asked, her face disappointed.

"It's because I can..." He could hear some men's voices near the door while he was speaking.

"Let's go hide," he said quietly.
