Chapter 2: Rebirth

"Ugh, I think I just had a very, veeeeery long dream... What's it about again? Ukh... Never mind that. Where am I?"

I covered my forehead with one hand. "Aaaa. Head hurts. My memory's fuzzy... If I recall... That's right! I died! Where am I?" Looking around. 'What's with this situation? I'm in... Grasslands...? And I'm alive?

'I'm alive...' I sighed out of relief.

"Could it really be? Am I in the typical Fantas — 'Not a chance, not a chance.' There's no way that's possible!" I laughed. "Unless... I'm in Hell..."

'Life really likes to bully me, eh... Sigh'

'This world being hell, might be true. I broke countless natural laws. One misstep and I could've destroyed the universe... I mean, well... I did radiate 150-200 miles of landform in my past life. That's evil in and of itself... SIGH...'

"Whelp, important thing is, I'm alive. As long as I dwell the plane of existence, I will return! It might take me months, years, decades, centuries, millenia. I will come back! So until then... Clyde, Lex, Alice, Rein, Kira, Mom, Dad, even Uzakawa. Wait for me on the far side."

Given a very last bit of hope, I jumped "Yahoooooooooo!" The fact that I can move freely in Hell, gave me a boost of confidence. Hence, my cockiness returned.

"Now, behold! The tranquil sight of Hell! Mwahahahaha! Await for me in thy throne, Satan! myself shall usurp thy dominion and spread mine influence!"

I continued blabbering, jumping about, screaming atop my lungs '— Force of habit... There goes my Chuunibyou-nature. I need to change that. I can't risk triggering suspicion. Ruling hell is not a joke.'

"Rustle—Splutch, Plop." A sound from nowhere...

I took a gander.

Rustle—Splutch, Plop

'Eeek!'

Rustle—Splutch, Plop

"Dammit... Satan! Stay away Demon! I'm not ready yet!"

'F&^k! NOOOOOOOOO!'

"Wait... Satan."

Preparing myself to sprint...

Step — Stare...

Right after a single glance below me. All the tension dissipated.

My worries has been stimulated by a new emotion...

Extreme curiosity, followed by immense bliss.

Kneeling down with one leg. "What's with this... Round, plump... gooey..." I grabbed it. "— Slime!" Propped it up "Woooaaaah! It's a purple Slime! Waaaaaaah!, it's got a tint of pink, too! Cute..."

I was overjoyed! I jumped around, Danced with the slime! I was extremely elated! All my unfounded inferences, have been debunked by a single slime!

'This lil' jewel, looks so CUTE! SO PRECIOUS! Should I keep her?! She's too adorable!'

"From now on, you're my travel partner! Rimu!, that's who you'll be! The "Rimu" corresponding from the Kanji of Ruri, defining a Crystal and Dream — For I awoke from a dream and found this priceless Jewel!"

[Familiar, Added: Name: Rimu. Type: Slime]

A tiny icon popped on the sides, accompanied by a faint automatic voice. Although, I was unable o perceive it then. The bliss I received from a single "CUTE" Slime, was enough to detach my mind from reality.

I picked Rimu up, put her atop my head, and began my exploration!

"We shall be off!"

Journeying with Rimu, we traversed the wide plain grass fields.

'Say, Rimu, where'd you come from — Is what I'd like to say, but I doubt she can understand me..'

"I sure was scared for a bit there... Aahhhh," I stretched my arms upward "That was a relieeeeef! I was nearly convinced that Satan was delivering me to Hell. Yeesh."

As I trekked, I was deeply in thought. 'Wait a damn minute... Slime... Slime?' Slowly coming into realization... 'I woke up from a vague dream... Found myself in plain grasslands and surmised that I was in Hell. If this is Hell... Slimes... Shouldn't, exist! Which means!? Am I really in a Fantasy world?!'

"Wait, wait, Shuma, snap back to reality... Reorient your thoughts and carefully rethink each event that transpired thus far..."

I rethought my experiences. 'I had a very oddly vague ream...' I then concluded 'That means after-death, I had a life-recall...' Alas, no matter how hard I thought about the after-death flashbacks, I came into a stump.

'Since I was so perplexed, I inferred 'I was in Hell...' And after that...'

— Exactly... After the following, I stepped on a slime. Now because of that reason, exactly. Was why I realized too late that I was in fact, "ISEKAI'd." Because joy took over, I was distracted and just accepted Rimu as the norm. Just as how one would see a cat as Adorable.

Having understood that, I made another deduction. "The books say 'Hell is the place for Temptation' Thus, Rimu... 'Tears — Wipe' is an illusion? — Wait, no. Do not make the same mistake, Shuma. Investigate further before concluding."

"Presuming that I'm alive, fit as a flea, and not actually in Hell, then I guess... Magic exists? — That is what I hope... If that exists, then I will have solid evidence to conclude that this, is the Fantasy world I have been yearning for, for years."

'Just sit back and relax, everyone! I will be fulfilling my dreams here and build a portal back — Or could I just learn Magic Transportation? — Whether magic exists or not, I will return after satiating my own desires.'

And so, my adventure continued with Rimu...

"Ahhh, that sure was a long walk..."

A huge tree was in sight. I walked towards it and sat with my companion. "Rimu, you doin' okay? Let's take a break."

I basked in the tree's shade and laid down. Rimu was excitedly prancing around.

'That was tough. After I find a village or establishment of some sorts, I should gather some info.'

Boing-Boing-Boing

"Heeeheeeh, Rimuuuuu, KawaiiiUwUuuu... I can watch this all day."

'Speaking of cuteness. Alice... I wonder how she's doing... Are those guys getting along without me? Before I even realize it... I'm missing them...'

"Oops. Got to keep myself together. Sentiments are for later. Time's running. I have to keep moving. Up you go, Rimu. We're gonna have to find a place to stay..." — 'It's already midday'

I proceeded on and on for countless more hours until something finally came to view...

"Rimu! It's a Forest!"

As we tread further, its exterior became more noticeable 'This is...' A grim-looking forest... One which greatly resembles those of horror movies. Cocooned by thick fog, with trees and land so barren. 'This place seems lifeless...'

"And here I was, happy to see something else aside from grass... I get a spooky looking forest instead. But, well. It's better than nothing. Let's go, Rimu. Don't be scared, Shuma's going to protect you!"

I followed the tracks leading through the forest...

"Wow. This feels so realistic. If it was Chibi-Shuma, he'd probably wimp out. Good thing I grew up to love the thrills. Well, what do you say Rimu? Scary, right?" Followed by a beam of smile.

Trudging ever so nonchalantly, I found a place to stay the night. Farther East — located a secured spot, shaped like a curve, covered with withered bushes. A spot, perfect for hiding from savage creatures.

'Mhmm, this would do.'

"There you go, Rimu. Just stay put. I'll be heading out for a bit. Don't prance around, alright?"

Boing-Boing

"Okay, good."

'Hope she really stays still though. Now. I got to find myself some twigs for fire. It's getting cold.'

And so I headed out. I roamed the deathly forest, found some dry sticks. I kept roaming around until I collected enough to start a campfire. After gathering the necessary materials for fuel, I looked around for Flint or Quartz.

"Found one. That was rather quick."

Rustle-Rustle

Hearing the creepy sound, 'I have to hide.' I quietly ran into an enclosed dead tree root.

"A buncha things sure are happening to me today. What is it now?"

Behind the gigantic sickly tree appeared... 'A morbid-looking creature' Bloodied. With movements so sluggish. Like a soulless vessel...

Speechless, I stepped back — 'Thuk-Snap'

"Crap! the twig!"

'Have I been noticed?'

My fears were soon realized. Looming closer to me. Its growl became audible

"Grrhhh"

"Damn it! I have to scram!"

And just when I was about to flee, "Whoosh-Slash!" It swiftly charged at me.

"Oh Sheit! Weren't you supposed to be sluggish?!"

'Waaah! That scared the crap outta me!' Fortunate enough, I managed to evade. "AAAAAAA, DAMN! THANK YOU HYPERSENSITIVE REFLEXES!'

"I'm saved!" — Or so I thought. Upon closer inspection, 'Oh...' I felt fear... 'I... Think this looks scarier than what I pictured...'

Right in front of my eyes was a bloodied person with crimson-red eyes. A being soaked in blood. Its skin severely tattered. The stench it gave was so foul that I felt like puking.

'Shuma! calm down! You can do this! You've practiced this in your past life!'

"Alright! Bring it on!"

The beast advanced and attacked with its sharp claws

Whoosh-Whoosh-Slash!

'Craaaap, That was scary!' Just barely, I managed to dodge. Amidst the dire situation, I came to remember a last-resort move.

"It's do or die!"

Slash!-Slash!

'Calm your nerves...' I felt a tingle.

'Just keep dodging. Heighten your senses... Calm your breathing... Concentrate on evasion. Visualize...'

I visualized; 'Produce dirt and restructure its conformation... Compress...'

— Slash!

'Vaporize... Moisturize... Freeze..'

— Slash!

'— Heat at a constant temperature!'

"PLEASE WORK!!!"

And to my hopes, the monotonic voice inside my head uttered; [Special Skill: Earth Manipulation, Wind Manipulation, Heat Manipulation, Aquatic Control... Skills Acquired successfully]

[Commence Synergism: Special Skill: Earth Manipulation, Wind Manipulation, Heat Manipulation Aquatic Control... Synthesizing Skills... Synthesis Successful — Magical Skill: Elements Manipulation, Acquired]

I directed my arms towards the beast.

Thud-Thud-Thud-Thud-Thud.

A rectangular cage made of sturdy rocks materialized in front of me, securely locking the foul creature inside it. I felt relief. "I did it... I REALLY DID IT!" And at the same time, I felt oddly fearful...

"So... what I did is magic right? It exists... I'm not in hell. Was I really isekai'd?" I had a lot of questions in mind.

On a desperate attempt to reach me, the beast slashed the cage and grunted fiendishly. After which, it tried to communicate "Hhh..EeeEe...LllL...Pp"

I felt sympathetic. "I see... He used to be human too..." I thought in my head that 'whoever that person might be, must have been suffering long...' I figured that "I'll try using magic to erase you" but it turned out to be a futile effort. "I'm sorry... I can't... The Cage was produced on dumb luck."

I hoped it for the best... "Some day... I will put you at rest. Wait for me..." I turned my back and went my way.

"I'll have to go back to Rimu!"

'Rimu...'

"That's right! I've been away for too long!"

I looked for the essentials I collected and went to the designated spot. I arrived, then peered through the darkness to look for Rimu... "She's not here!"

"Rimu! Rimu! Rimu! Where are you! Rimu!" I called out frantically. But then...

— Boing-Boing

Upon finding her, I felt at ease. Although, "Rimu! I told you to stay still! We're on unknown grounds you know? Yeesh... Well, in any case. I'm glad you're unhurt..."

After a harsh reprimand, I calmed my wits down and decided to forgive her. "Now. C'mere. Let's put you in my head and go back."

Snap-Crackle-Spark

The calming heat of the flame, and its enveloping vibrancy was enough to loosen up the tension in my body

"Hwah This heat calms me..."

Boing

"Rimu? You sleeping?"

Boing

"She seems to understand a bit of what I'm saying. I guess, I really shouldn't jump to conclusions..."

"Auuuaa, I think I'm gonna sleep as well... Rimu, G'night"

And after that harsh night, I put out the fire and went to sleep peacefully without any monsters' interference.

Morning then came.

Boing-Boing-Boing

"...Ugh, what's — Oh, Rimu... Mornin'"

The adorably-plump and purply-pink slime went boing-ing in my stomach... Of course, being the fantasy-obsessed guy I was, "UWAAAAAAAAAAAAA! CUTENESS OVERLOAAAAAD!!!!" — I almost died.

After calming myself down for the millionth time, I decided to set out.

"It's moving time!'

"Surprisingly... This place looks relatively alive in the morning. The fog cleared up"

'— Still no signs of life though.'

"Now, which way do I go?"

Rough roots. Dry grounds. I observed. "This is no good." I looked farther ahead and found a path. "There it is!" Apparent plant life. To get out of a forest, I had to locate tree roots with nutrition.

Still somewhat overwhelmed by the situation, I remembered my practice-runs on the Realistic VR Machine I invented in my past life. It gave me a sense of drive to get out. Venturing every nook and cranny, a path opened up. It was lush, full of healthy plants.

"Finally! We're finally getting outta here! Glad no one attacked us this time. Right, Rimu?"

A dirt path extended as we followed the abundance of greenery.

"Off we go! To the place of wonders!"

Trailing the road, I decided to lean on the tree nearby to give myself some shade from the blazing sun.

'Can't believe I'm really in that "Fantasy World" This is pretty amazing. Now I just need to create a portal to pair with the one at my past life or to learn Teleportation magic — If that even exists.'

"This sure is a real pain in the neck."

Boing?

"Oh, Sorry Rimu. I didn't mean you. You'll never be a burden to me"

'I'll take a short nap.'

Hours passed and the sun was at its calm...

A relatively hoarse voice called out to me and patted my shoulders.

"Young'in"

"Ugh..."

Boing?

I groaned. "Yes...?" Realizing the old man in front, "Oh, I'm sorry..." Shaking my head sideways, I prompted myself up and inquired "What can I do for you, good sir?"

"Hohoh, no need to be so formal lad"

To explain the formality in my tone... — It was intentional. As I had an impetuous character in my past life, I had to be very cautious. Being a reincarnated man from one world to the other, I had to fabricate a persona in which people would perceive me as a Decent Person

"Erhm, sorry, Sir? Grandpa?"

Being the old man that he was, he laughed frivolously and proceeded with his introduction "Call me Tsugio, young'in. Just Tsugio" The name made me ponder. "A Japanese name... Well that's surprising. That means Japanese other-worlders came here before me."

"Well then, Tsugio-san, can I help you with anything?"

"May I ask for your name first?"

"Name's Shuma... Shuma Kagezuchi, Sir!. And the Ruler of... — I mean, Just call me Shuma" Nervously, I giggled.

"Mhmm, Shuma-kun, are you an adventurer by chance?"

"Sir, YES SIR!!"

And that's where things took a turn for the worse. I acted completely out of IMPULSE! Being the Super Otaku I was, my head thought to itself that 'Adventurers are COOL!' I completely, completely ignored the consequences.

'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I'm a JACKASSSS!!!'

Such were words to describe the agonizing regret I had felt then.

"— Oho... I see, I SEE! Shuma-Kun, you're an odd one, hahaha. You see, Hardly anyone venture past these lands. You must know why. The forest engulfing us is very much perilous. If you got here unscathed, you must be relatively able!"

I scratched my head in disbelief "Hehhh, I hardly saw any monsters though." My great luck saved me. That's what I thought.

"Oh, really? Now, that is odd. The forest usually teems with monsters. You must be fairly stro"

"— In any case! I have a favor to ask..."

"Hmm, go ahead."

"Can you direct me to the nearest village? If possible, a place where I can temporarily work for as well. I'm a klutz, see... I lost my money along the way here..."

"Hmmm, if that is the case, allow me..."

Tsugio-san waved his hands to make me follow him. I followed as we steadily walked through the pathway. Until we have arrived... "Welcome to The Village of Arche." The scenery looked more like a well-developed olden town, less like a village. Tsugio-san smiled and said "Make yourself at home!"

Tsugio-san toured me. As I was guided, trees blended well with the buildings. "Truly a scene from a Fantasy Anime. Truly an Anime Village..." I discreetly uttered. To which the old man overheard "Anime?"

"Ahh, pardon me... Pay me no heed, Tsugio-san. Anime is like a form of expression in my place. In any case... Say. Can I really STAY HERE!?"

"Very much so! Everyone one would be overjoyed of your presence. I know I've already said this but hardly anyone venture past these lands." — Yada yada... Tsugio-san explicated. Our small talks lasted until we've arrived...

"Welcome to our Inn!"

"Eh... EHHHH? I have no money?"

"Don't worry about that, your lodging would be on us. Just you being here makes everyone very, very happy."

"Are all of you well acquainted?"

"Mhmm, I suppose... Most of us are. We might be quite the sizeable village but almost each and every one of us are well related."

"Heh... I see... Must be nice."

Continuing our chatter, Tsugio-san and I entered the establishment. Just right in front of the door, I bowed my head in an act of gratitude and thanked him for his hospitality. "'tis a Pleasure to make your acquaintance!"

"Hohoh! I feel the same! Well then, Shuma-kun" Waving goodbye, Tsugio-san left by closing the front door. I went in further ahead and right in the center, I saw 'A village girl?' Or so I thought. 'An attendant? She looks cute...' My male thoughts were flooding her with compliments. '— She's approaching!'

"Greetings, my name is Lea... What an adorable Slime you're holding! May I pat her?" She was captivated by Rimu's essence.

"I KNOW RIGHT!!?? Her name's Rimu."

At that point, deep inside, I already held deep respect for her. The fact that she was able to discern the godly beauty of my intricately adorable Rimu, moved my heart deeply...

After she was done petting, she inquired "Are you the visiting adventurer?"

"Arhm, yes" I kept up with my blatant lies despite only being a reincarnate for a day and a half.

Lea answered professionally... "Well then Mister Adventurer, please follow me..." She went upstairs and I trailed her. "This here, would be your room." She beamed a cute fragrant smile "We hope you enjoy your stay!"

The effects of her smile were too stimulating that it made me blush. "...Yeah... Thanks" The adorable slime sensing something, "Boing"-ed at me. I closed the door.

"Sorry about that Rimu... I blushed. But no one's cuter than you!" — Obviously, nothing went beyond my love for the Slime that discovered me in my despair!

That reply seemed to satisfy Rimu. She leapt at the bed and so I also laid flat. I contemplated on my actions. "Now I might just be in deep shiet..." I said I was an adventurer, not taking into consideration my extremely inexperienced ass.

"Adventurers are supposed t'be cool.. Like, Kablaam! Kapoosh! BOOM! — Type of cool." I was starting to believe I had dug my own grave

On an attempt to calm myself, "Slap-Slap..." to my cheeks lightly. Twice.

'I have to get ahold of myself. whatever happens, happens. I just have to man up.' — "Now now. How should I get about this..."

I was on unknown lands... Had no prior knowledge of the world I was in. Nor an understanding of the world's natural laws. "How does magic work?" Even that question lingered inside my head endlessly. I was absolutely clueless.

I steeled my resolve. With fist clenched tightly in front of my chest; "I need to Train, both mind and body. Visual training would no longer work. I need to properly learn the ways of the sword and of ranged weapons."

There was just way too much I had to do. Too much to figure out alone. All of which is supposed to be done vigilantly... "Truly a pain in the ass this is... Too much menial work..."

"Oh well... Tomorrow... I'll extract info from the residents." I stood up, opened the curtains, and looked outside. "It's already this late... Rimu, let's sleep."

I uttered my "Good night" to my dearest... And so we fell asleep...

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Alas, the day of hard labor came; To begin the day, I stood. Did light exercises, stretched and picked up Rimu... "Up you go Lil' Slime." — "Boing-Wobble" my dearest Rimu leapt away. I looked at her with curiosity... "Perhaps... Rimu, would you want to bounce your way, following me?

Boing-Wobble!

The sudden change in her personality pleased me very much so... I turned back, crouched, covered my head and thought deep inside 'FANTASY WORLD BANZAIIII!!!!!!' The cuteness overload made me almost want to collapse... After regaining composure, "We shall be off!"

Outside the village. "Bustling..." I took casual walks following the pathway and started friendly talks with bystanders in an attempt to collect information. Countless conversations passed and finally. 'Here's a lead!' Seemingly, an inexperienced adventurer resolved my day's woe; "See, the Kingdom of Weiss is the most advanced country to date and the only one with access to the Magia Records — Or so I heard... Conveniently enough, it's also the closest to this puny village of ours."

'Magia Records...' From its moniker, I surmised "Record of all Magical Spells..." I felt the urge to learn from it. "By any chance... Is it possible for a mere commoner like me to read it?"

"Unfortunately, as far as I know... Only Legions have access to it. And I highly doubt they can read it willy-nilly."

I sighed... Nevertheless, "Information well received!" I pursued my queries. "In that case! How do Legions gain the Status?!" The man laughed hysterically, slapping my shoulders to and fro. "You surely jest!" His uncontrolled giggles persisted "Legions are frightening young man. Rumor has it, 'Each Legion possess the power of 10,000 men!'" He calmed down, tapped my shoulders gently and stared at my eyes sharply "Give it up. You'll break if you don't"

Regardless I insisted. "Please tell me!" He scratched his head. "Ahhhh... If I really can't change your mind, pay Weiss a visit. It's sort of a physical-magical examination. That's basically it." I let out a sound of relief and bowed. "Good sir, thank you for your time..." The man turned back, signaled goodbye.

After the long chit-chatter I found my first objective, "To become a Legion..." Pitifully, I was still inexperienced, still dumbfounded... "How strong is my inherent Magic Capacity. Am I magically gifted?" I questioned myself. "— It might be low for whatever reason it might be... The truth can be disappointingly harsh" Greatly disheartened I was...

"Wobble-Wobble" But I thought; 'As long as Rimu's with me..." As long as she stays by my side, 'I'll get through any challenges!' I regained my motivation... I hunched over, and asked softly, "Rimu... Want up?"

Blop — Wobble — The majestic creature purred. "Are you a cat, hehe." My soul felt cleansed. As if It was about to ascend to the heavenly plane...

Moments later, I went my way to the good old man, "Let's visit Tsugio-san." But then again, a problem poses itself... "I forgot to ask for his address... Damn..." I reached out to someone from the sidelines — My question was as easily answered...

I went to the appointed location and there he was, sitting outside of his home "Ohoh, how nice of you to visit me, Shuma-kun... Are you enjoying your stay?" However, I did not respond to that. Instead I pointed a finger. "Tsugio-saaaaan. You were the village chief?!?!" The jester did not utter a word of his standing in the village. "Why did you not tell me?!?" To which, He flippantly responded "My apologies... I love to give surprises, see... In any cases, enough of my prattle. What business have you come here?"

With an unimpressed posture, "I would like to ask... Is there any monster-infested forests here?" Twiddling his chin, he confirmed my questions...

The Forest of Strauss... 'It's a forest administered by the Beast Spirit, Strauss. Hence the name.' Concerned for my own safety, I inquired further "It's not as perilous as the other forest... Right?"

"The Whispering Deadlands you mean? No. It's not. That forest's nature simply derived itself from a Powerful Demon's malice and utter wreck. If you intend to hunt, you can join the next expedition. I'll let the men know' I opened my eyes widely, "IS THAT ALRIGHT?!" The man smiled, "Not a big problem!!!"

I smiled back, "Alright! I owe you one, now. Tsugio-San..." I bowed in gratitude, turned back, and went back to my lodgings.

"Evenin' Lea-san." I saluted

"Ara, good'eve to you, Shuma-kun... Rimu is doing well as always, I see." Yet again, I was flattered by her words "Riiiight? She's just the BEST!" Thereafter I went hurriedly, waving "I'll return to my room! Have a good evening!"

"Have a fun!"

Upon arriving, It was the usual pattern; Opened the door, Rimu leapt to the bed, and I laid flat... I collected my thoughts "Forest of Strauss... There ought to be monsters of varying sizes and strength levels..." I visualized a concept map inside my head for the expedition. "If I fight ignorantly, I'd die... " Grim were my thoughts. "I'll have to assume that the Ghoul from the Deadlands was a weakling..." Such, I presumed. "If that ghoul was a grunt... Then, it would be as strong as a relatively capable monster in the less perilous Strauss Forest" My mind wandered for hours. Brainstorming for strategies, and scheming survival tactics.

After reflecting on my thoughts "Tomorrow's the day! I have to Train my body!" I stood up. "Calisthenics Training it is!" I did the Basic Exercises as a warm up: Pushups, Squats, and Pull ups on the door frame.

Consequently, I proceeded with the hard part: "Advanced Calisthenics Movements!" Starting with Handstand Pushups... "1... 10... 20..." Rested... "Front Levers... Back Levers... Planches..." It went on... Every move just went progressively harder by every set and repetition done. Hours passed and I was just about to get over the workout "Pheeeewww..." Instead of feeling exhausted, my body felt refreshed than ever! "My whole body tingles!" I came to love the sensation. The soreness made me forget all about my anxiousness...

To conclude the intensified session, I did some stretching. It seemed as if Rimu was trying to imitate my actions as she herself extended herself... "1... 2... 5... 10... Stretches Done!" I felt vigorous...

I sat on the chair, took out the pen from the desk and doodled Rimu's resplendent figure to pass the time... "Lookie here, Rimu. It's your uncaptured beauty!"

After some time, I went to the shower room... Seemingly modern as it looked. The practicality of magic devices made showers and baths a possibility in this world.

Faint droplets touched my skin gracefully, ridding my body of all filth. The water's descent steadily rejuvenated my overworked flesh... I got off the shower "Surely refreshing..."

From the door, awaited Rimu... "Boing"

"Still prancing around as usual... Heehee... Well, it's time to sleep, c'mere."

The night howls... "ZzzZzzzZzzZzzZzzzZzzZzzZzzzZzz"

The sun's rays flashed my eyes... "Goodmorning, Rimu..." With a yawn, I stood, stretched and prepared to go out... I put on my Coat "Let's go!"u

"Another day of productivity..." I headed to Tsugio-san's home... "Ey-ey-oh! Shuma, 'tis I! I've come for another question, if you don't mind..." The room was engulfed in deathly silence... 'Awkward...' I thought...

Tsugio-san broke the intensified atmosphere by asking; "What question do you have for me Shuma-kun?" I answered "Tell me more about the guys attending the expedition..." He raised his eyebrows, "If that's what you need, just go to the tavern. North-west from here. Is that all?"

I beamed a princely grin and dashed my way out waving. "Thank you Tsugio-San! I owe you one!"

After rushing my way through the streets... I arrived...

"Muscle... MAN!" An intimidating person appeared. "Muscle... Muscle... MUSCLE!" I glanced at his spectacular physique; 'Mountainous Biceps... Back built like a beetle... Chests only describable as voluptuously-manly... Abs like impeccable bread... and Legs comparable to a Minotaur' I stood in amazement...

The man turned his head in my direction and approached... "Hohhhh!" He slapped my back... As he was built like a bull, I took damage. "You must be the rumored young adventurer."

I was in dumb-silence. Deep in thought, I figured 'They look just like how I expected them to be' I snapped out of it. "Right. I came here to inform you. Let me join the next expedition. If there are any for today..." I lowered my head. "— PLEASE ALLOW ME TO ACCOMPANY YOU!"

From the stools, all men stood and gathered... "What a lucky lad you are!" Some guy strapped his arms onto my shoulders... "We were just about to head out!" He flexed his biceps, touched it, and grinned excitedly.

"Follow us." Commanded the Gigantic man. And so I did...

We trekked our way to the Forest of Strauss. "Trail behind, as to not get lost..." uttered he. Awkwardly, I responded. "Y-Yes sir!" The commander took notice of my tensed behavior. "Nervous, I see. That's surprising. Even adventures get nervous?"

"Ah, eh... It's not that..." I let out a sigh and hunched my back "— Just... Please lead the way Mister...?"

"— Name's Tsuki" he gave out a smile. "That's pretty feminine" — Tsuki-san laughed uncontrollably "For a beast like me, the name Tsuki doesn't quite match!" — He predicted what went on my head.

"Let's keep going Shuma..." Following Tsuki-san's advances, we reached the area of infestation. The atmosphere immediately turned gloomy and the humidity intensified. We proceeded. "Hey, Tsuki-san... Aren't we in the danger zone right now?"

"Not yet... Monsters inhabiting this place reside just a bit farther ahead... Did Gramps Tsugio not tell you anything?" I was taken aback. "Eh? EHHHHH??!?? GRAMPS?!?!?"

The troop turned to me... Everyone shushed me... "Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... Monsters can hear us!"

Rustle... Rustle...

They were all alerted. "Tsuki-san"

warily, he responded "Yeah, we've got company..." And within that short span of time... A Magical wolf in grey composition leapt from the bushes. "Grrrrrr" — From Its azure eyes, emanated blood lust

Slash! — Tsuki-san was attacked! His men, concerned "Tsuki!"

"Ye lot! BATTLE POSITION!" He led the battlefront professionally. Everyone was proficiently battling the enemy at hand. The wolf fired magical projectiles yet the men parried... With a final STRIKE from Tsuki, the Grey Wolf was taken care of. "Such monsters are no harm for us." He assured me, and smiled.

'I was not able to do a thing...' I thought.

"Don't ya worry, this forest's monsters are unchallenging... Although..." With a grim look, "There's the Enchanted Beast. It's the strongest Monster in this forest..." The troops were looking down "That monster's capabilities equate that of the Whispering Deadlands'"

I paused and reflected... 'I restrained a Ghoul from Whispering Deadlands once... Monsters here... Surely, I can handle!' Yet again, I regained confidence!

At that point, I surmised 'I can beat that Beast alone!' Hence boldly, I declared "Tsuki-san. Everyone! Allow me to observe for today's expedition. Protect me. In exchange, I promise to overcome the Enchanted Beast, and conquer the Whispering Deadlands!" They all looked doubtful. Their reactions were much anticipated 'A guy needing protection can't possibly defeat such foes' I had thought, but I already decided. "Please continue the expedition as I observe!"

'I don't make false promises...'

The expedition continued... We went on, venturing. Farther... Farther... Farther into the forest. Slaying one grunt upon the other. Encountering different monsters; Goblins, High Goblins, Magical Wolves, Ogres, and what not, until dusk came upon us...

"Good job ye lot!" Exclaimed Commander Tsuki. "We gathered enough materials!" added another troop member. And there I was, audacious "Uhmm... Tsuki-san... I know it's impudent of me to ask but... Can I have my share of materials as well?"

Tsuki-san stared curiously "I mean... Sure. If it's just this once" Everyone followed...

To prove myself to the people, I made a request. "— And Tsuki-san... After we get back... I challenge you to a duel!"

Everyone cheered! Tsuki-san saw the seriousness in my face, "Shuma, I accept... I can't decline a real man's plea."

With the guys in high spirits, we trudged our way back to the village...

And so... We arrived, Thereon started, "Shuma vs Tsuki! Start!" We were given wooden swords to re-enact sword fights before the Mock battle initiated!

"Tsuki-san..." I called out... all the while thinking "I never planned for an audience! So embarrassing!"

A spectator yelled "Tsuki! Go easy on good ole' Shuma-Kyun!" One added "Shuma! You better win! I'm bettin' on yer ass!" What I expected to be an easygoing match, turned into a pressing event!

I readied a stance "Tsuki-san... Here goes..." CLACK! — Our swords clashed. Tsuki-san progressively attacked with heavy-blows. I fended myself with each and every hit. His strikes were gradually getting stronger, and stronger, making me feel more and more exhausted... I had no other choice but to evade.

"What's wrong, Shuma?" Said Tsuki-san. "Not taking the offensive?" Unscathed, he declared.

Pathetically worn down, I responded "I'm confident in my reflexes, see... Although... I don't think I can beat you here..."

From the audience, one man complained; "You have to win! MY MONEY'S ON THE LINE!" And that phrase, somewhat hit a nerve... 'AAAAAAAAAA! I'm not an expert swordsman for all hell's sake!' Frustrated, I analyzed Tsuki-san's movement patterns as I defended with my sword. "What's wrong, Shuma? Can't attack? Hahaha!" I was vexed... "Do go easy on me!" Focusing my attention on the surrounding area, "Tsuki-san! I may not best your brute strength... But!"

I ran around, luring him to the area I speculated his defeat... I ran, he slashed, and I blocked! 'This is it!' With a single strike "CLACK!" Tsuki-san stepped back... I smirked "Watch your steps Tsuki-san." The rock felled him. I pointed my sword at his neck. "Seems like I win this one. Heh..."

The crowds were celebrating. "WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" And there were some, agonizing "MY MONEEEEYYYY!!!!!" As all these were transpiring, I helped Tsuki-san up. "Using your environment to your advantage. Very clever of you Shuma!"

Flattered, "Hehehe... I'm nothing without my genius." Tsuki-san grabbed my shoulders, "Pathetic for me to admit but... It's my loss." He smiled.

"We'll be feasting tonight!" Said the gambler as they dispersed. Tsuki-san's allies remained. "That was an entertaining fight, Tsuki!" said his men. Another slapped my back and bantered, "That's the man to clear the Deadly Forests! Hahahahahahaha!" Laughter enveloped us. "Can't believe you lost, Tsukicchi!"

Tsuki tapped the back of his head "Well, me neither. Shuma's unpredictable!"

In that short time, I became their topic. Realizing that development, 'I gotta scram!' If by any chance they had captured me to force upon myself a beer... I thought that I might slip up and reveal my identity.

Hence awkwardly I excused myself, "Tsuki-san. Thank you for the materials. I'll use it wisely. Now I shall exc—" Alas... My fears were realized "To the bar, we go!"

"NOOOOOOOO!!! SORRRRRRY!!!! I HAVE TO SLEEEEP!!!"

I ran frantically...

Upon arriving, I jumped to my bed, and slept with Rimu peacefully...

ZzzzzzzzzzzzZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZzzzzzzzzzzz

I awoke with the wondrous slime on my chest. "Uhhh... Mornin' Rimu... Was last night lonely for you?" I petted her... "Don't worry... I'm always thinking of you!"

Laying flat, I saw the ceiling, and conceptualized... "Yesterday's data proposes that the Enchanted Beast is as powerful as that Ghoul. Which means..." I had every potential to defeat the monster. "Rimu, let's strategize!"

The first that came to mind; "Magic..."

'I wonder if I can replicate that Magical Cage from back then...' I extended my arms, and visualized; 'Restructure the Earth's conformation... Vaporize... Moisturize... Freeze... Heat constantly...'

I sighed "... No effect, huh..."

'I suppose it doesn't work as simply as that.'

"What am I possibly missing?"

I gave it some deep thought, but I gave up as; 'Utilizing something I have no prior knowledge of could lead to my downfall. Let's give it up for now.'

Picking Rimu up, "Time to make some coins." I headed out to the usual bar.

"Hey, Tsuki-san. I have a couple few questions." Tsuki-san stood, "What is it?" From my coat, I brought out "These materials... Where can I sell them?" Curious gazes befell me, "Should I escort you? Wait, no. Let me give the 'Famed-Adventurer to defeat the GREAT TSUKI-SAMA' a tour of the village!" He laughed proudly.

Awkwardly, I grinned, "Y-yeah... I'd appreciate that..."

Tsuki-san led the way, arriving on a workshop. "Here we are."

"So this is where we can sell these..." Far from the counter, was a bearded man. "Yo, pops Forge! Can you buy these from Shuma?" I thought 'Forge? What an unusual name...' Forge-san looked back and came to us... "My name is Shuma." I bowed "Please buy these materials!"

He took and inspected the items, after which, he sharply gazed at me "175 Silver Coins for everything" I expected a bit more. "Stingy" inaudibly, I uttered.

ferociously, he retorted "Huh?! What'd you say?"

"Nah, nah! I'll take it!" I replied Nervously

"And, uhm... Forge-san. May I ask for a sword recommendation well within my budget?" He let out a "Hmmmmm" and played with his beard. He went to the back, returned and pulled out one "Durable and light sword." I asked for the price "125 Silver Coins. Take it or leave it." That hit a nerve. I had thought 'Not only stingy, but greedy to boot.' Left with no choice, I bought it and headed to yet another location.

"Tsuki-san. Can you help me buy clothes?"

"Indeed! Let us give you fine clothing!"

With Tsuki-san being my tour guide, we went places. Made small talks and cracked jokes... Momentarily, "We arrived"

"This town's amazing..."

"— Village, not town, Shuma..."

An employee approached. "Welcome good sirs! What service might I be able to provide?" I uttered specifications; "A Magical garment; Specifically, a White Coat that I can freely move in" He took down notes, led me some place, "In that case. How about this clothing?" I was shown an expensive garment. He seemed like a haggler rather than an employee... "I need something Cheaper." I looked around and something caught my eye "How about that?" A Neatly designed White Cloak. 'It's like a hooded Lab Coat.'

"Fine eye, sir! This is crafted from the hides of Yada Yada... — It's 30 Silver Coins!"

'ALRIGHT!'

"I'LL TAKE IT!"

I went to the cashier and paid for what I bought.

"Sorry for the wait, Tsuki-san."

Tsuki-san looked at me with admiration "Hohh... All white... I guess it's just appropriate to say you look All-White on those clothes." He wittingly joked about.

"Well, that aside, Mind I ask about the Enchanted Beast?"

"You were serious about that? I thought you were joking." He briefly stared, "Alright... I'll tell you what I know."

Our discussion began while we strolled. I asked Tsuki-san questions, he answered. It was truly a valuable asset for me. It went on and on until the time of dusk arrived.

"That was very specific." I bowed, "Thank you for taking the day to help me!" We parted ways

Rimu and I went back... Upon arriving at my own room, "Rimu's asleep... She probably asleep halfway through." I took her from my head, and placed her on my bed. All the same, I laid flat beside her.

'From how Tsuki-san worded it, the Enchanted Beast must be a Griffin...' A Mythical Creature, part Eagle, part Lion. "I read from somewhere 'the head is their weakness' but..." — I had no way to reach its head. "I'm still weak... This is tough." I scratched my head aggressively. "I need something else!"

Hence I devised a new plan. "If I can't beat it with brute force, I'll beat it using Nature!" I instantly thought "De-oxygenation..." Since it was a living being, it surely had the intrinsic needs of every animated organism. Yet, the problem therein remain "How can I execute Plan: Deoxygenation..."

I spent time murmuring to myself. "Mhmm! THAT'S IT!" I put more thought into it. Hours and hours of formulation, visualization. My mind wandered... I fell asleep...

"Ah..." I stood up, "AHH! I'll need to prepare!" Left Rimu sleeping, I went out, and started laying the groundwork. Daybreak came and I started scouting the exterior, interior, every nook and cranny of Strauss' Forest the entire day. I began setting my grand-scheme into motion...
