"Jessica?" I stopped at the bottom of the stairs, staring at my ex-girlfriend like she was a ghost.
"Hi," she managed a smile, giving me a once-over before averting her eyes. "I didn't expect to see you here."
"This is my pack; where else would I be?" I felt awkward. I hadn't seen her since she threw me out of her apartment, and we hadn't spoken since.
"I thought you were reenlisting," She frowned, her eyes going to my shoulder. She was one of the few who knew that I needed to have it surgically fixed, but at least she knew not to say anything aloud.
"Change of plan," I shrugged, not making a face at the pain. I hadn't told Nefra about it.
Fuck. Nefra! Goddess, how was I supposed to explain this? Sure, she knew about my ex-girlfriend, but I never thought I'd have to introduce them like this. I thought I would only have to deal with something this catastrophic once I took Nefra to California.
What was she doing here?
